One World: The Lord's Prayer from a Process Perspective

Rate this book
Can you imagine reading the Lord’s Prayer as a gateway to adventure?

Bruce Epperly, who has introduced process theology to the masses through concise, readable guides, presents this well-known prayer through a vision of a relational, open-spirited, profoundly personal, always creative, and forward-looking God, who invites us to be companions in the holy adventure of healing the earth.

This is not your routine book on the Lord’s Prayer. Instead, it is an invitation to to holy adventure through sharing in the prayer of Jesus. Each short chapter includes a section titled “Living the Prayer of Jesus.” In the back, there are a series of questions for conversation.

This book is short (only 35 pages of text besides the questions) and concise, but it is also challenging. It would make a good church wide or small group study, and is suitable for individual reading.

The Lord's Prayer is one of the iconic expressions of the Christian faith. It is recited in many churches every Sunday. People know it by heart, adding their denominational distinctives. However, do we truly understand what it is that we are praying? I have written a book exploring the Prayer and its meaning. Now Bruce Epperly adds to the collection with this brief book (44 pages or less in print form) in the Energion Topic Line Drive Series).

Bruce explores the prayer from the perspective of Process Theology, which gives his interpretation its distinctiveness. While he uses Process as his interpretive lens, he makes use of other writers, including my own work, as well as that of NT Wright, John Dominic Crossan, and John Spong. Now there is a diverse lot!

The chapters are brief, and can be read generally in a couple of minutes. If you would like to study it in a group, there is also a study guide at the end.

As Bruce has suggested his book and mine can easily be read together as companion pieces. I would agree!

An Excellent Study

Thoughtful and insightful review of the prayer which Jesus taught. This is a very good resource for examining that prayer. I strongly recommend it.
