Blizzards, smoldering attraction, a strong, independent woman, and an untouched soldier who's more animal than man...
I pulled my stranger from the river. Breathed life into his lungs.
I saved him in this arctic tundra. Yet he looks at me like a meal. Touches me like I’m his greatest temptation.
Tells me he desires my body to use in a way I’ve never offered myself before.
Storm raging outside my cabin, there is little to do to escape him. Little chance I might survive this encounter unscathed.
He wants life. My life. And I have no choice but to offer it.
And I don’t harbor a single regret.
A Night by my Fire is a stand-alone novella previous published in the anthology Hero Undercover: 25 Undercover Romances (no longer available). This story contains no cliffhangers, but does offer building heat that will burn you from the inside out. Need to warm up in front of a fire? Wrap yourself in a soft blanket and enjoy!
USA TODAY bestselling author and Amazon Top 25 bestselling author, Addison Cain is best known for her dark romances, smoldering paranormal suspense, and twisted alien worlds. Her antiheroes are not always redeemable, her lead females stand fierce, and nothing is ever as it seems.
Deep and sometimes heart wrenching, her books are not for the faint of heart. But they are just right for those who enjoy unapologetic bad boys, aggressive alphas, and a hint of violence in a kiss.
I dont remember the last time I read a book I enjoyed and equally disliked at the same time. There is no denying that this author is talented and that her writing is fluent as I read A Night by My Fire in one sitting, but damn I had so many dislikes.
River is a wild woman living alone up in the mountains. Untamed and crass, she's borderline feral. Yet she is kind enough to rescue the stranger floating half dead in the lake.
As the short story unfolds, we discover that the mystery man Stephen was left for dead and isn't pleased about being rescued.
Forced to share close quarters in River's cabin while he recovers and a snow storm rages, these two barely survive by not killing each other and eventually banging. What should of been the beginning is just the ending.
Both characters were fucking painful, and don't even mention the ending. This novella was a Bloody Trainwreck!
It's the season for sharing, so I decided not to be a miser and release one of the books I keep in my dragon's horde to warm you up while it's so cold outside. This stand-alone is passionate with no cliffhanger.
This is a novella-length read one that I really enjoyed. It is the story of River and Stephen, the former a woman living alone isolated out in the wilderness away from civilisation and the latter a stone-cold assassin who has been betrayed and left for dead by his former employer. When River rescues Stephen from the water half dead their paths collide. stranded together this hard man needs River for his very survival. Stephen is cold analytical and extremely literal, River is his opposite hot-headed and unlike anything, he has ever known from his former life. Slowly he becomes fascinated with the wild woman he is currently playing house with and when these two forces of nature finally collide it was epic. This may have been short but it still had all the feels and the unfolding story had no trouble capturing and retaining my attention throughout. Would adore a sequel to this as the ending was just so bittersweet, now that really would make my day as this feels like there's still more to River and Stephen's story. I voluntary reviewed a copy of A Night By My Fire.
An independent, crass mouthed woman living in wilderness saves a dangerous-no-redeemed soldier. The story revolves only on both of them. The scenes, situations is built up slowly and it is written perfectly. The hero's background was revealed but I didn't understand how the heroine came to live alone.
Rest assured the book was fantastic. Only the ending seemed abrupt.
I don't feel like paying $2.99 for an 84 page story at the moment, but I'll keep my eye on this book. If it ever goes on sale or KU I'll give it a try.
lmao I definitely don't feel like paying $3.99 for an 84 page story. Good for y'all who enjoyed this tho. I really hope I don't see this type of publication from more authors. I'm absolutely not interested in reading 'books' shorter than a hundred pages and coughing up $4 to do so, no matter the author.
A short story by Addison Cain, perfect to warm you up. Get it
It was decent in that it was short, it had a sense of romance however it was very much abrupt for me. I would have liked more of a build up. More tension between the central characters.
The only thing preventing me from giving five stars is mostly attributed to the length of this novella.
I would love this thing stretched out into a beastly tome, so I could get to know the characters and the surrounding mountain environment better.
When a story takes time to fully develop people, relationships, and place, the story is unforgettable.
I know this author is more than capable, because: a) She is a goddess of the Slow Burn b) Read Born to be Bound, if you haven’t yet and aren’t a wilty easily offended flower.
In summary, this is a good read for a chilly night wrapped in a soft blanket, just don’t expect the deeper feels of her other efforts.
This was my last chance with this author... unfortunately now I know that Addison cain is not a good choice for me and this is sad because I love how she writes... but her stories leave me so disappointed EVERY SINGLE TIME.
One thing that can always be said about this author is that she is always reinventing herself. Regardless of what subgenre that she writes, she always crafts a story that is unique and strangely all her own. Her ability to create characters and stories that are sure to have a different element that is is not often written about is astounding.
This was a quick read. Very different than what I am used to from this author but still a nice read. It has a little bit of everything; humor, steam, and interesting characters. The ending was different than I was expecting and I wish that the story was longer (this is nothing new since I always want more words from this author). I hope that she maybe someday revisits this novella and expands on it.
Surly injured assassin in the frozen wilderness + bad-ass survivalist chick, not to mention Addison Cain’s mad skills at making pages bleed with life in her uniquely poetic and filthy way = an addictive read that I inhaled like a fresh breath of winter air.
This one doesn't have a cliffy, but I'm still a tortured Addison Cain fan because I WANT MORE.
This is not one of Addison Cain's darker stories, but that doesn't mean that it's nice and light and sweet either. It's gritty and dirty and feels very real.
River lives in the woods of Alaska and is very happy living alone, in the way that she wants. Then she pulls up a stranger out of the freezing water and drags him back to her cabin.
I really like River. She is a take no bull kind of person. She doesn't sugar coat anything. She isn't going to politely lie to anyone to make them feel better. She's going to lay it out straight to anyone, including the stranger. She tells him that no matter what he thinks he knows, he's a babe in the woods to her. He points out that she's not all that lady, she's dirty and she cusses. She points out that the only reason he's eating anything is because she went out to hunt it, kill it, and bring it back.
The Stranger, AKA Stephen, seems like he's kind of a blank at the beginning. Of course, he's just been through a trauma, and he's been trained in a particular way, so it takes a minute to get his personality. But once it comes through, we find out a lot more about him.
From Hero Undercover: 25 Undercover Romances. It's a pity I bought it in december, since I already have it and read it from the anthology. I thought it was a new release!! I can't remember if the disclaimer I'm reading at the end of the blurb was there from the beginning, if so, I only can blame my self and my obsession with AC's books!
I expected more from Ms cain. All her books I've devoured and it demands another one .this lacked character depth or a plausible storyline. It felt like a few chapters from a another book of two secondary characters
“You think you’re the first renegade I’ve found skulking around these woods? I know your type, ex-military who think they can go it alone under the impression they’re so badass. You can’t. This place will kill a fool unwilling to understand just how dangerous it can be. So, yeah, out here I’m better than you.”
(gracias universo) 🙌🏻
I picked up this story because it was likened to Hard to Swallow. Honestly Hard to Swallow is such a great novel. I loved it. So with this grouped into the same category, I was really excited to read another smart ass sassy heroine interact with a fearsome alpha male.
River wasn't so much sassy as she was just a recluse living in the mountains. Stephen was a foreigner with a scary past so he didn't know much about social interaction.
There was no cute witty banter like there was in Hard to Swallow.
It was just these 2 characters thrown into unprecedented circumstances that wind up wanting to fuck eachother.
And then after dinner hot and heavy sexual encounters Stephen leaves and River is happily living in her log cabin with a baby on the way.
Hard to Swallow ended on a little bit of a cliff hanger but it wasn't like THIS.
I'd hope for Cain to maybe come out with another story that wraps this one up but she struggles with finishing her series. And with my luck, she'd turn it into some crazy reverse harem novel. So I won't hold my breath.
Also, I appreciate that River was probably a smelly gal but trying to make that sexy? That just doesn't work.
Survival of the fittest with a conclusion that puzzles. I find myself bereft at this short story, I felt it could have been longer and without the abrupt ending but no excuses now since it’s already been paid for.
In typical Addison Cain fashion, she leaves us wanting more. Love the build up and the characters. I hope she decides to flesh out this story further. I'd be all over it like a moth to a flame.
This book is a little different from the author's typical books and I found it quite enjoyable. This is a short quick read between two people - one of which left in the wild the other surviving in the wild. I loved her character as she was strong, independent and completely capable. Stephen was an interesting character - the broody alpha for sure. I really enjoyed reading about how these two came together and then seeing the dynamics change between the two. I wish I could give it five stars but I feel like I need a little more from these characters and this story
I loved this book. It was really different, the way the story is told and written as well as the build up and relationship. The end made be sad, it probably shouldn’t have because the characters weren’t. But, I felt a loss of them, for them. I loved that both of their points of view were told in the same scenes. This was really good.
I love this short story, is like all of Addisson works, the story grabs you and you don't want to finish so soon.
River is a strong and very unique woman, she very intiguin, and you want to know more about her and her story. She saves this monstruos man from drowning and that is how the meet. The interaction between this two is really funny and enterteing. He is letal but also innocent in others aspects. The only bad thing is that end so soon and you want to know much more.
I hope that Addison writes a full book of this story because I want more.
I am always excited to dig into a new book by Addison Cain. She has written such different books across various genres and, while they are all unique, I can always distinguish her distinct brand of storytelling. This novella is no different. This is a story of River and Stephan, the recluse and the stranger and their unlikely and unconventional relationship. While it might not have a traditional ending (as many other Addison's works), it is rife with humor, survival and scorching heat.
This thrilling, fun little piece had me in stitches more than once.
River lives in the middle of nowhere, in dependant and knows how to make use of what the land has to offer. Shabby, dirty, gritty but oh so empathic... Well... It's there even if a little bit served wrapped up in sarcasm. Hehe
In comes Stephen. Stone-hearted? Njaanooo... I don't think he is, he's just got very bad people skills. But that is to be expected considering.
His blunt honest approach to everything, and his complete inability to recognise humour or piss-taking was wonderful to read.
He practically takes everything literally.
It's fantastic to read and brings on so many funny situations.
All in all this little novella was a fab read. Great for when you need to lift your spirits a bit.
Oh my goodness, what a delicious and unexpected read. First of all, River is a bada$$! She’s surviving the hostile wilderness all alone and she saves lost people’s lives. Stephen is one of them. She pulls his nearly lifeless body from the river and gets him to safety. Stephen sees River as prey at first and then it develops into something more. Stephen has a remarkable awakening and he has River to thank for it. I don’t want to give away the ending, but it’s true to the characters
