Whoever said change is good should have their head examined.
As far as Billy McDonald is concerned, he's changed enough for one lifetime. He's been clean and sober for two years, he's learned to manage his anger, and he's uprooted his life and relocated to Maine to reunite with his wife, Katie. He's even helped Katie create a resource center for at-risk youth, where he teaches guitar to any kid who's interested.
He's paid his dues. He's evolved. He's a better man. It was hard work, but his personal life is the best it's ever been, and his music career is finally on track. Life should be easier now. Smooth sailing. No surprises, right?
Yeah, well. Not so fast. Katie wants him to become a father—again. As the saying goes, been there, done that. He sucked as a parent the first time around, and as far as he's concerned, you don't get a do-over.
Too bad she doesn't see it that way.
After everything they've been through and all they've fought to overcome, could this be the one thing they can't get past?
This book was a surprise for me because either I didn't catch that there would be a fourth book or the author just decided to add another. Either way, I was happy to be back in Billy and Kate's world, I just didn't want there to be too much drama.
The last book came out late 2017 but I think this book does a nice job of catching you back up on where things have been going.
Billy and Kate are doing well or so they think. Billy's ready to travel grown up style with Kate but Kate is having baby blues. Luckily, she has Joey's Place to keep her busy.
There's also a new person in Billy's life and he's not happy about it at first. I was wondering where the story was going but naturally, this person was just right.
It pained me that Kate had to go through what she did...hasn't she been through enough? This time I thought she was stronger and that was a good thing.
I loved that their kids, Rhiannon and Devin, were around so much. I quite enjoyed their grown up selves.
The story ends well. It was amazing how Billy came around and things just "fit". What a great way to end a series.
Better Man is *such* a satisfying conclusion to the Of Love and Madness Series. If I could pull one quote to exemplify the book for me, it's when Billy says about Katie, "I had to lose her to find myself." As much as I love Billy, I realized I had been wanting more from him after the last book in the series. What I got with this one was perfection. It was absolute REDEMPTION! He looked inward more than ever and grew into a truly Better Man.
Karen Cimms is an excellent writer and storyteller. She expertly weaves in juicy bits from the previous books, even going back to Billy's past to offer him an epiphany that helps him embrace the surprises in his life rather than rail against them.
The element of suspense in this book had me turning the pages as quickly as I could. The happily ever after was all the sweeter for it.
I'd say "encore!" But I know this is the end of the series. Thank goodness it was all I could ask for and more.
Better Man is the fourth and final book in the Of Love and Madness Series and delivers all of the angst and emotion of the previous four books, but with a twist that includes new characters and a touch of suspense.

Stretching an arm across the bed, Billy found it cold and empty, which explained the aroma of coffee and freshly baked muffins wafting into the bedroom. With a groan, he rolled over and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. It was a little past seven. It took a few moments before he remembered why Kate was already up, bustling about—and from the sound of it, baking, for god’s sake. Sundays were for lazy morning sex, not brunch with surprise guests.
Pain throbbed behind his eyes and in the back of his neck. It reminded him so much of a hangover that he couldn’t help but wonder if he’d sleepwalked himself to the liquor store and unwittingly flushed twenty-six months of sobriety down the toilet.
Not that he didn’t deserve a drink after last night's surprise revelation.
He forced himself upright. He didn’t need a drink. What he needed was to call Reese, his AA sponsor, for a nice, long chat. Maybe he’d invite him up to Maine for a few days, at least until Christian went back to wherever it was he’d come from.
It was too early for phone calls, and since Kate was obviously not returning to bed, even for a quickie, he forced himself to climb out of his nice warm bed, shivering when his bare feet hit the cold hardwood floor. Coffee could wait. He needed a hot shower and a couple painkillers—the kind that wouldn’t get him into any trouble.
In the shower, he rested his forehead against the tile and let the hot water beat against the back of his neck, hoping it might melt the knots that had sprung up overnight. He pictured the stress washing away and swirling down the drain.
“Morning,” Kate sang, a little too chipper for someone who hadn’t had morning sex. “I brought you some coffee.” She peeked around the shower curtain and held out a steaming mug.
“Thanks,” he mumbled, accepting the cup and taking a sip. Strong, black, and extra hot, just the way he liked it.
“How come you’re up so early?” she asked.
“Because I like waking up beside my wife on Sunday mornings, grabbing hold of her, and giving her a couple orgasms before breakfast,” he said honestly, “but when I rolled over to get things started, she was gone and I was too depressed to try and go back to sleep.”
Kate laughed. Did she think he was joking?
“I’m glad you’re up. I could use some help with Tomas when you’re done. He’s a bit cranky and clingy this morning and could use some extra loving. Getting to bed so late last night threw him off.”
“I have a better idea. Why don’t you get undressed and climb in here with me, and I’ll give you those orgasms now?”
Another laugh. “Like I said, we have a four-year-old—a cranky four-year-old.”
“No, actually we don’t have a four-year-old.” Tomas wasn’t the only one cranky this morning.
Her smile slipped, and she sighed so hard he felt her breath brush across his face. “Whatever. I need you to occupy Tomas so I can finish up in the kitchen. Think you can manage that?”
Sarcasm last night, snark this morning. What happened to his sweet, even-tempered wife? He took another sip of the coffee and handed her the mug. “Yeah, sure. Entertaining a cranky preschooler is way more fun than morning sex, anyway.”
That earned him another sigh. A second later, the bathroom door closed with a loud snick.
Not even eight a.m., and he was ready for this day to be over.
Better Man is the epic conclusion of a love story between soulmates that plays out over more than two decades.
Better Man. This is the 4th and final book in the Of Love and Madness series. A true love story, a journey, an experience. I adored this family so much. This like the other books in the series is definitely not short of drama but wraps up perfectly. What a beautiful epilogue. I will truly miss Kate and Billy and they will be one of my favorite couples ever!!
In a journey punctuated with authentic problems, emphasizing that real life relationships are not a smooth ride but a cumulative of what matters and compromises with the ultimate goal being a good and satisfying life, Karen Cimms brings the perfect conclusion to her Of Love and Madness series in Better Man.
Billy and Kate's love story withstood not only the test of time but the ins and outs of this series. Tying up loose ends, reaching for purpose together and apart, both Kate and Billy embraced their commitment even as divergent paths and decisions offered challenges in this work. While these characters faced life changing choices and events Billy’s acceptance of them played a pivotal role in this story. Confronting seemingly selfish wants and opening up to unforeseen possibilities, as indicated by the title of this work, Billy's actions proved him to be the better man. Ms. Cimms did a wonderful job of keeping Billy in hero territory when sharing his preferences and reasonings, ones that could have very easily have been labeled self-absorbed as they were contrasted with the selfless hopes of Kate, giving his point of view validity as well. Billy and Kate were so complicated in their humanity, covered in scars this pair were beautiful in their imperfections and held up under the intense scrutiny of Ms. Cimms' character development. In the end this couple's long shared love proved to be a strength and bond that made the outcome of this story not a compromise but a natural and right progression of Billy and Kate’s relationship.
It is impossible not to feel invested in Ms. Cimms' writing. This author's sensitivity combined with her recognition and inclusion of her character's flaws are traits that leave permanent imprints on her readers. A testament to the depth of Karen Cimms' writing is her ability to add new layers to her portrayals and give unexpected fresh glimpses into her characters foundations. Better Man left readers on a good note full of hope and the knowledge that beloved characters Billy and Kate's could handle whatever the future had in store for them.
*Other than the first book in this series the works in this series are not stand alone.* *I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Magnificent, extraordinary, superb, awe-inspiring and awesome aresome of the ways I would describe Better Man. Karen Cimms has left me speechless!! If you have not read the Of Love and Madness series to date, I would highly recommend you do so before reading Better Man. Better Man is a continuation of Kate and Billy’s story. In Better Man, we see the progression of the lives of Billy and Kate along with their children Devin and Rhiannon. There are a few surprises, twists and turns in this story that I did not expect in which we truly see how Billy has learned to deal with the demons that haunt him making him a “better man” for him and his family. This series of family and their trials and tribulations is hands down one of the best I have ever read. This book will have you craving more.
I think I have a new favorite author. I had a hard time putting any of the books down. She loses half a star because she needs to be steamier with the sex scenes. Yes, I really wanted to go there with Billy! Lol
What an amazing ending to an incredible series. Just when you thought that Billy and Katie were finally going to get their happy ever after, nope Karen had other ideas!
Life changing surprises come at Billy and Katie out of nowhere, an unknown secret from his past comes to light and he finds out that Katie wants another child. Billy is unable to become a father again, an opportunity comes for Katie to get her wish but it will threaten all the plans Billy has made for their future life together.
It takes the reality of losing Katie forever for Billy to see that he is being selfish, and that Katie's needs are much more important than his own happiness. It will take much more than two years of being clean and sober to make him a better man who deserves Katie's love.
The book was totally unexpected in it's twists and turns, but it was a really well written series ending. We have always known the intense love that Billy has for Katie, but it was so heartwarming to see them together at home with their family.
Billy has worked hard to put his past behind him and it is good to see that he is ready to enjoy life with the woman he adores, but without giving up his rock star life entirely. Well done Karen, I was so enthralled with this story that I was unable to put it down, which was no surprise as it was the same for the previous books in this love story.
I was so excited to read this book that at first I rushed through the first chapters. Then I slowed myself down cause I wanted to savor my time. I love these characters so much, and anything Karen writes about them I will devour. The love of Billy and Katie is epic. After decades of drowning his demons in whiskey, Billy's has the chance to become the Better Man he always wanted to be. But being sober doesn't make you a better man just for being sober. Katie, true to form, not only emerged from her tragedies stronger but also kinder if that's even possible. Opening the Center, creating a safe space and once again helping a woman pick up the pieces after being abused. The journey of these two women will forever be linked through their love of a special child. A child Katie has desperately wanted - but Billy wouldn't risk her life to have one. But when tragedy strikes, they are faced with taking on an enormous responsibility of a child, without risking a pregnancy and he fails to be the Better Man.
I was actually annoyed at Billy for most of the book. When presented with several opportunities to be the Better Man, he sunk into his selfish ways. While he justified himself - they were all lame excuses. I didn't understand why he wouldn't be on board cause Tomas was a no brainer - especially given his upbringing with his grandparents. It wasn't until much later in the book that he did come to his senses... But it was more like an after thought ... Plus a whole lot of convincing and a random kidnapping. I was annoyed cause he did not choose the Better path right from the get go.
When Billy finally found Katie in Maine years ago, there were things he was doing to better himself, yet we didn't see any of that here. No Tia Chi, or drinking tea in the middle of night, calming his anger...Or just talking with Katie. Where was that Billy? And all that drama at the end (which was kinda too much imo) and he had to wait at home while they rescued her. Where was the Billy that drove through Digger 's roadblock to get to Katie after the incident with the crazy guy - where was that Billy?
My Billy (or rather Katie's Billy) would have pushed Christian out of the way and dove into that basement to save Katie no matter the cost or consequences.
As for the story itself, lots going on and it kept a good pace moving along, always exceptionally well written. There were places that felt overly detailed in recounting the past. While yes if read as a standalone - a reader would need that info, but if you have read the previous books it was too much back story that felt forced and didn't conjure up the same feelings when retold as a thing that happened rather than the turmoil they felt when it happened. In this book, several side stories were weaving in and out of the main plot that I didn't quite fully grasp the necessity of ... Like Christian? While he played a role in the story, I didn't really get his overall purpose.
Other characters that were sadly missing where the neighbors and the lobster!! Much of the book happens in winter, tho, but s till how can you talk about Maine without a lobster? No cameos from the father and son next door, loved them so a bit bummed they didn't make it to this book. As well as Danielle - she was discussed but other than that Christmas random DNA kit that was it. Where was she? Would have been nice to get to know her more.
Did however, catch the references to Rogue which was fun.
Overall, I loved the story - mostly cause I adore these characters. That said, Billy fell short on the Better Man until the very last chapter. Maybe my bar was too high and hopeful that he would rise to meet Katie and for her, to be worthy of her. But, honestly, he needed a swift kick in the pants. Felt like there were a few too many extraneous side stories and new characters when it would have been nice to visit some of the past characters. A lot happens in the book that kept the story moving, but did feel like it meandered in too many directions without digging below the surface to true tragedy. Even Hector - the villian- turned out to be okay and got a grilled cheese sandwich.
A solid ending to their story though; wrapped up nicely. A better man though? I'll leave it at sober. He could have made some better moves.
I read the whole series and it was pretty fantastic.......the series takes you through the lives of Kate and her rock star hubby Billy. It was the greatest series I've ever read. And am not giving nothing away.
Final review to come eventually...I can't seem to stop thinking of more glowing words for Billy and Katie's final story 😸 and Karen Cimms talent. I might need my own editor! LOVED this book as I did the entire Of Love and Madness series, it's completely UN-forgettable!!! That cover is exactly how I pictured Billy...😍!!!!!!!!!
When I head there was going to be a fourth and final book to the Of Love and Madness Series I was very hesitant to read this book. I was thinking to myself “what more could Karen Cimms do to Kate and Billy now?” The second and third book destroyed me into pieces making filled with so many emotions that it took me months to finish the second one because my heart could not take it but once I built the nerve I am glad I made it through to the end of the third book. I was content with the ending of the third book because Kate and Billy were at a good place and my heart was happy for them. But When I heard the announcement, I kept on thinking what else could go wrong or what did Billy do now, I thought he finally changed and had his redemption arc. Then I kept on debating whether or not to read this book because I felt like I had to build my nerve again to read it. But I am so glad I did because I fell in love with precious and brave Tomas. Karen Cimms is one of those authors I love and can destroy me and build me back up. I usually don’t leave reviews but I decided that leaving a review for the final book of this rollercoaster was worth it, I am so glad I stumbled upon these books because even though it made me have all these emotions but it also showed that we are flawed and it is up to us to change who we are and not let the past determine our future. And again thank you Karen Cimms for this wonderful journey and I hope maybe in the future we will hear more about the Donaldsons.
I reread books 1 through 3 before I picked this up. I'd suggest definitely reading those books before this one, if you haven't.
This book. I wanted to read a little before I went to bed, but apparently I had forgotten how engrossing the first three books were. Instead, I finished it at 4:00 this morning, and I'm not even sorry. Coffee is my friend.
I won't go into the plot, the blurb is pretty accurate. There is a surprise or two, of course, but giving them away would take away from the experience. Reading it yourself is way more satisfying than reading spoilers. I will say that dear old Billy is as egocentric as always, just not self destructive anymore. I wanted to pinch him several times, but I love his character too much to pinch *too* hard. ;) I love how this book tied everything up in a neat bow. I'm sorry to be leaving these characters, but I feel better knowing they are in a good place. I can already feel the book hangover starting, and what a great problem to have.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC.. Best day EVER!!! I've obsessed over Of Love And Madness series since I first read them.. What I didn't know I needed was Better Man.. Wow!!! This book left me without words. Im still processing this book. Kate and Billys story is like no other. This book brought all the emotional baggage and turmoil that relationships go through.. life choices that come up and back around in your life. The decisions that couples face in many ways they live there lives.. All our husband's may not be rock stars 🤣😉but I sure could relate to concerns of billys and Kates decisions in life. This book is EXACTLY what we needed to fill in our obsession more.. The emotional connection that I made with Billy in this book was more emotional than I expected... My heart hurt and broke and got put back together again.. Thank you karen for bringing Kate and Billys story back to us and bringing them back into our hearts... Billy and Kate forever..
Please someone hold me tight. I am very emotional right now. First of all, I love Billy and Kate, and of course their kids. Their story is so real. Like real rockstar and his soul mate. Real like Bon Jovi and his wife, John Legend and his Christy. Billy is a star with a feet of clay. It made him lovable nonetheless, because he is enamor of his Katie. He just can’t help his addiction. That disease is a beast as some of us can attest to.
Usually a third or fourth book in a series, there will be meaningless banalities, this book is not! I was literarily at the edge of my seat. Too much will be a spoiler. This is a wow. I am lost for words. Oh, and the Kate wants more kids in the synopsis? It is true. In a way. Just read this. Also Karen Cimms? Don’t break my heart and stop telling Billy and Kate’s story. Please.
Sigh this is the last book of the Love and Madness series and I am going to miss these characters. Kate and Billy are destined and they have been through so much it is so good to see them still in love and being true to themselves. I understood both points of view and was glad to see that they came to an agreement (meaning Billy realised he was in the wrong!). Billy was a better man but he was still Billy - a little selfish, spoke before thinking but loved Kate with everything he had.
I will miss these characters and am sad to see the series is over. Maybe Karen will give is a glimpse of the future sometime (we can always hope!)
Better Man concludes an epic life journey of a man and woman’s love story. This is a series of four books and should be read in order. I chose not to reread the earlier books and while I feel that you could probably read this one as a stand-alone your journey will be ‘better’ if read in order. I was not disappointed. Karen Cimms, like in the previous books kept me engaged with her beautiful development of her characters. 5stars plus ❤️
So happy that Karen gave us more of Billy & Kate. I loved catching up with them, seeing that Billy is doing well and that they’re still happy in love with each other.
Still, the curve balls thrown their way throw them off a bit and the surprises!? Wow! But I’m Billy & Kate fashion I love how in the end things come together as they should. ❤️.
While I’m one who always wants more, this is a great ending of the story of Billy & Katie. Great job Karen. Thank you for this!
I desperately wanted more of Kate and Billy and Better Man totally delivered. Life isn’t simple or safe and the Donaldson family is not immune...but seeing them finally in a better place individually, in their marriage and with their kids is so emotionally rewarding. Karen writes scenes so vividly that all my senses are engaged. Other than Rhiannon’s meals, the scenes with food made me hungry and I now want to teleport to their town in Maine. Better Man has it all: laughter, suspense, a little mystery, mental health and social issues, and lots of love. Treat yourself by reading it!
You will laugh, cry, have all the feels, and absolutely love this book. I was hooked from page one and just could not stop reading til the very end. I love Karen's books. You will too. Pick up the whole series.
This book ends the saga of Billy and Kate but I guarantee you their love lives on. Christian and Tomas are wonderful additions I'm sad to see the series end. They truly became family. Read the series. You will enjoy!
This story was absolutely Phenomenal!!!!!!. It has everything a fantastic book should have to get your attention from the beginning to the end and more, so much more. Karen is a fantastic storyteller and PHENOMENAL writer🤗😁.
I had read the first books in this series, plus the .5 holiday one, years ago. So it was a surprise to see this fourth book when I started to reread the first books. Karen Cimms did not disappoint in this book. The story evolved into a better ending than I could hope for. The drama and angst that was here showed how much both Billy and Kate have grown since the last book. And how the children were also able to work out the dynamic of this special family.
I absolutely enjoyed this series. I didn’t think anything else was needed from the last story but I was wrong. The bits added in this story made me happy.
To be honest the first book seemed long and I almost stopped reading it . I am so glad I kept reading because it was one of the best series I’ve read so far ! So sad it’s over ! Great love and family story . Would most definitely recommend this series and author ! Great job writing this Karen Cimms !
This is such a great story! I love the way Karen has wrapped up Billy and Katies story. Their story has its ups and downs just like any love story, but their love runs deep. These characters feel so real to me. Be sure to read the other books in the series first. I've enjoyed all of Billy and Katies books!
Better Man, the latest installment in the Of Love and Madness series, is a delicious and sweet insight into the Donalsons' family life. This series is one of my favorites ever, so it was so satisfying to visit them once more. We get a few new developments and as soon as I started reading about certain new characters, I immediately knew where the story was going. I patted myself on the back when I discovered that my assumptions came to be and some more. I loved the introduction of new and adorable characters; I am looking forward to their stories. This was a fun and engaging read; it felt like revisiting old friends. Once more, Karen Cimms delivers a flawlessly written love story.
I honestly didn’t know if Billy and Kate were going to make it for most of this book. And I mean gutted because he was being so selfish.
Kate has sacrificed so much of herself for years and she was trying to do the right thing. To take care of an innocent and Billy could only think of himself. I would have done exactly what she did.
I really think all the children of Kate and Billy need a book. We need to see how their lives have shaped them into who they are as adults.
This book has an HEA but just know it’s hard to get there.
Needs more stars. I was so excited to see there was more of Billie and Kate’s story and Karen Cimm did not disappoint. I read this in a day. If you like a good rockstar romance who the author actually shows us readers that the H loved his wife this is the book and series for the you. If you have read the first 3 books you know the H, Billy, screws up ALOT abut you never doubt he loves her.
Reread April 2023....I don't know what it is about this story but every time I read it it just swallows me whole. I absolutely love Billy and Kate no matter how many stupid things they did. The evolution of both of them as individuals and as a couple was quite a journey! And every time if finish reading it I'm sad it's over. Until next time Donaldson's❤ PS. Karen, maybe you will someday gift us Christian's story 😍 ************************************************** Aug '20 - 5* ...RTC
