Finding My Way Back to a Place I’ve Never Been is a collection of stories gathered amidst the aftermath of childhood trauma. The vignettes share glimpses into childhood trauma’s impact on a person’s life. LOST is a story shared for the purpose of rescue; a picture of the hope that can be found, actually the hope that has always been there waiting to be found. In Dr. Ivy’s unique presentation, the recollections will highlight some of the possible influences trauma can have on a young life and without intervention the unfortunate paths it can take. Each story is followed by insight to the impact as well as questions that will help inform the reader and expand the application of stories shared.
I was immediately drawn into Dr. Ivy's story: her little girl confusion when boundaries were crossed, her dismay that she, the daughter of a pastor, would be subjected to the culture of cover-up and image-based church life; her disorientated sense of "self." By sharing certain snapshots of her life and inviting readers into her almost stream of consciousness processing moments, Dr. Ivy cleverly demonstrates how healing often happens. She summarizes her vignettes with practical knowledge about maladaptives behaviors that result from unaddressed trauma. LOST is an invitation to peer into God's ability to restore a broken soul, while gaining helpful insight about the mental, emotional, and relational impact of trauma.
