Peligan City is still haunted and City Hall’s initiative to solve the problem is an outfit called Ghostcatcher. Every night they patrol the streets with their high-tech equipment, following reports of spectral activity. But they are only hunting one spook now; the Herald calls it the Final Ghost and it is public enemy number one.
But to Lil Potkin he is Nedly Stubbs, her investigative partner and best friend. Luckily, Nedly has Lil on his side. Now an apprentice reporter for the Klaxon, she manages to talk her way into a job shadowing intrepid journalist Marsha Quake, who is writing a feature on Ghostcatcher.
With Lil's help Nedly is able to stay one step ahead of the game, but for how long?
Sophie Green Is the author of the Potkin and Stubbs trilogy. She has a degree in zoology and an interest in folklore and urban legend. She was born and still lives in East Anglia and works as a librarian for Suffolk Libraries.
I can't believe it's over. What an incredible, heartwarming end to this trilogy!
I have loved every step along this journey with Lil and Nedly, and am sad to see it come to an end. This scored very highly with CAWPILE, getting 8.57 out of 10, and a very high 4 star!
I will really miss reading this series in-between some of my more heavy-hitting books.
What a joy it has been to follow these characters. Nedley is just the sweetest character and you can't help but feel sorry for him. During the series I have slowly fell in love with Nedley and it is sad to let him go. This book was very fast-paced, intriguing and well written it's such a shame this wasn't around when I was in Primary school.
I really liked the ending I thought it was just right - I don't want to give away any spoilers but I would hope to see Nedley again maybe in a spin-off?! I would definitely read more from this author.
Save the best for last and oh boy this Sophie Green did that. This was my absolute favourite of the trilogy and I can't believe it has all come to an end. I started reading this a midnight for a 24 hour readathon and whiles there was a thunderstorm going on. This made the experience even more special. The atmosphere is completely through the roof in these book. Lil is one of my favourite middle grade characters EVER and Nedly is just a cinnamon roll I want to squeeze.
This series is HIGHLY underrated. I need you all to pick this up. I promise you won't regret it! 🖤👻
I read this book in 5 hours and I'm a slow reader. I adore the world Green has created and the loveable characters. I am currently a sobbing mess tho because the ending was so nice!
original review 2021 the ending of this one makes me CRY
this is tonally different from the first two of the series but it's also really necessary. with all the stuff happening in the other books it's easy to forget that one of the main characters is . yes, he's a ghost, but when you're following the plot you're not constantly thinking about how he got that way. however, in this book Nedly's condition becomes a central idea, forcing us to think about it more as well as addressing its long-term consequences. I didn't expect the series to go that direction but I'm glad it did and I think it was a perfect way to conclude.
this one ALSO delivered the answer to one of the biggest questions I've had since book 1 and I'm really hyped that I got that answered
I finally finished the last Potkin & Stubbs. I know it took me a while lol I do that sometimes with the last book in a series. I don’t want them to end, so I drag it out. I’m really going to miss these guys. This was another great book. With another amazing cover, & amazing illustrations throughout. I highly recommend this whole trilogy y’all. Such a great mystery series, with awesome detective goodness....I am so looking forward to whatever adventure the author takes me on next. I hope she has many more for us in the future. So talented.💜 I’ll miss you Nedly, but I know I can revisit you in the future, & you’ll be there waiting.💜💜
Synopsis of 1st book in series: In the corrupt metropolis of Peligan City, Lil Potkin, a determined young reporter, is on the lookout for a scoop. One rainy night she meets Nedly, the ghost of a boy that no one else can see. Nedly has been looking for someone to believe in him ever since the investigation into his disappearance went cold. When they discover that his death is connected to a series of mysterious murders, Lil and Nedly set out to expose those responsible, with the help of a down-on-his luck private investigator, who might hold a clue to Lil’s hidden past.
This was an exceptional end to the series. The writing style was remarkable - it fit so much with hardboiled noir. It was consistently clever, funny, but also had some emotional moments that packed a massive punch. I cried so much by the end as the growth in characters maturity and relationships became obvious. The atmosphere was sustained throughout, a high level of curiosity, camaraderie and adventure. It was intriguing and full of enough mystery, but the character relationships here shined. I have enjoyed the whole series immensely, but this was the best yet.
3.5 again, I think!! I got really swept up in this one and read it all today haha I just needed to know how it all would end!! I also really like this sort of epilogue, where we just see the direction things are headed, probably. I think a lot of epilogues try to do too much, check in with every character, cover all the happy endings. This one fit with the story and made sense as a nice end to the series!
I also really desperately want a story about starkey just tripping over things and being awkward and befriending animals even more awkwardly lol
What a great series! I'm gonna miss Lil, Nedly, and Pelican City. As well as the gorgeous illustrations of KJ Mountford that transported me even more into this world.
In this last book I was honestly less into the Ghostcatcher storyline, cause there wasn't as much detective work involved. It was mainly about helping Nedly escape them. But my feelings were constantly punched!
More like a 3.5 stars, I was so disappointed that it left it's spookiness and eerie mystery but I understand it was to establish what will happen between Ned and Lil, since a friendship with a ghost in a used to be haunted city can be quite complicated. The ending was adorable, but I expected more from the last book.
Because, yes, in my eyes it just sounds weird. I can't read this word without thinking about that word. It's probably supposed to be funny, but it didn't work that way for me. Apart from that, not much else to add. Everything was okay, but that's it - just like the other two books.
Sophie Greens books read like a movie. Her wirting is catchy and graphic. Her characters absolutely gripping. Plus this book has a beautiful message - on an individual and political level. If you are in for a spook, read the lot!
Strangely enough, this was by far my favorite of the trilogy. I felt somewhat bored by the other two at times, this one held my attention storyline wise throughout. I enjoyed the ending to the series as well.
4.5 stars! I’m so sad that this series is over but I’m so happy that i read it. I’m going to miss this world and these characters. Definitely worth a reread!
Read- May 2022 -I'm so sad that this is my least favourite in the series because now it's been left on a down note even though I still really enjoyed this book
Potkin and Stubbs has come to an end, it feels like too soon for I have loved this series so much but each part of the trilogy is utter perfection no more no less bringing us to an ending that is so very brilliant. I’m a huge fan of this series with its cinematic evocation of a grimy tired city corrupt with crime and fuelled by misery and corruption. The rain soaked streets sigh with desperation and the neon lights of nighttime businesses flicker with false hopes and broken promises. Inspired by the film noir genre these books take the tropes of the eager young ingenue, the battered and embittered former detective turned PI, investigating dark crimes, in this case that turn out to have a supernatural twist because our Third man is a young boy killed in an experiment by the villain, only visible by Lil and slowly learning powers of moving objects and manipulating electricity. This book takes a perilous turn as Ned is on the run from the Ghostcatchers who seem to have more than luck and tip offs on their side. Karl J Mountford’s illustrations as always are brilliant and create impact on the page in their signature recognisable style with a hint of Art Deco cinema and a dash of a moody graphic novel helping orientate and navigate Potkin and Stubbs’ world and often foreshadow and echo themes across the novels.
I just love this series so much. All of the characters are so close to my heart and I am so sad to have now finished the series. If you love detective noir and spunky middle grade novels than this is a series for you.
Absolutely five star book and series, loved every minute i've spent reading this series. So sad to say goodbye to Lil and Ned fabulous characters and storyline. Look forward to seeing if the author continues with potkins and stubbs or introduces another hero and heroine. Will definitely be reading these again at some point. Too good not go ever revisit. Highly recommend the series to anyone looking for a good story, good characters and a good bit of mystery.
