Omg so many things have happened!!! We learn about the last School Mystery; WTH AOI; the cool double meaning with the elevator code (see translation notes); poor Akane-kun; what’s gonna happen with them in the pit?!?!
At the end of the previous book we started a new arc, and this book confirms that it's a doozy. At this point in the series there is only one School Mystery we haven't met yet: #6, so it's clear that they'll show up this time.
The setting is a high school first-year (10th grade) sleepover, with other student council members present presumably so Kou (9th grade, which is middle school in Japan) has an excuse to be present. After the previous arc--which took 3.5 volumes, felt convoluted and overall wasn't fun for me--I was excited to see that the danger in this arc was introduced with Nene and Akane Aoi (School Mystery #1 and Nene's classmate) running into trouble, and Akane promptly removing his supernatural-blocking glasses so he could kick ass.
I'm happy to get Akane back into the story as more than a comic-relief character. His reveal as the (temporary) 1/3 of School Mystery #1 showed a more serious, kickass (and aesthetically-pleasing) side of the Aoi Akane-obsessed geek that he acts for most of the series, and it's good to spend time with more secondary characters who aren't evil--I can only stand so much of Tsukasa's machinations or Sakura and Natsuhiko's plots and rumor-spreading.
This volume also brings Aoi Akane to the forefront, which is something I'd been wondering if it would happen for a while now. The story so far has been ambiguous about when Aoi has any supernatural-related secrets herself, or whether she's just rumor-obsessed and out on the edges of several things mostly due to her proximity to Nene and/or her existence, like the other students, in a supernatural-laden school. This volume doesn't clarify, but it sure does look like Aoi is going to play a bigger role in this arc (though we still don't know whether that's due to her, or if it's a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time).
Like, there is some drama in here that I'm excited to see resolved.
Still, the highlight of the book for me was the scene in which Hanako joins Akane and Nene to seek out Aoi:
That levity is needed, since their adventures and interactions once they get to the boundary are emotionally-charged because of what happened to Aoi.
Oh mein Gott, ehrlich. Und ein wenig Mitsuba x Kou, was mich einfach jedesmal freut uwu.
Aoi-chan has always been super suspicious to me. Idk how I feel about that ending. It was good though not going to lie. But it ended up leaving me with sooooo many questions.

We finally get to meet the last of the 7 mysteries! And he’s just as intimidating as you would expect. And I love that we’re tackling Nene’s mortality already! Hope she survives. And shoutout to the mangaka team for always shining a spotlight on the side characters in a natural and entertaining way!
kinda interesting ngl. i'm really excited about the 6th school mystery supernatural and the reveal of the thing which can help yashiro 🧍🧍 i hope kou can somehow help✊
