The year is 249 AD and the Roman Empire is falling down a precipice. It will take a man with iron in his veins to set things right, and accomplish the impossible. From a humble upbringing, a boy emerges who is destined to change history. This is the story of Lucius Domitius Aurelianus. Part VI: Roman The horde of the Scythians cross the frozen Danube to do the bidding of Eochar the Merciless. Their raid strikes deep into the Empire, into the heart of Thracia. Decius gathers his legions to crush the barbarian menace once and for all, assembling an army the likes of which the Empire has rarely seen. The emperor is no fool and soon the Scythians retreat before the might of the legions. Has Eochar met his match, or will the horde triumph? Will the death of his father be avenged? Will Lucius Domitius finally become a man of peace, or does the god of war have other plans?
Hector is a freedman. In 2016 he managed to escape from the corporate world, in which he played the part of a detribalised Chartered Accountant.
Nowadays he hides away in the Garden Route of South Africa with his wife and two daughters. He is addicted to reading historical novels and his hobbies include hiking, wine and sustaining niggling injuries on the tennis court.
249 AD I realized yesterday I had not kept up with the releases of books belonging to "The Thrice Named Man" series by Hector Miller. Now that I am caught up with books 5 & 6, I only have to wait for the seventh book. The books feature truly awesome fight scenes, something I enjoy a whole lot more than gun shot simplicity. These men trained and worked at being proficient killers. There are some losses, though, so that makes for something to look forward to in the next book.
Decius has claimed the title of Emperor. He has betrayed his oath to previous Emporers and now commenced a campaign of persecution on his own people; Christians. Lucius is still looking for revenge for the atrocities the Roman elite have carried out against his family. The Barbarian hordes and Lords are honour bound to repay Lucius for the his support in previous battles, having brought the support of Arash to deliver them victories. They descend on the Roman Empire hell set on loot and blood but also show compassion to those being persecuted. Later the story moves on, with Lucius tired of war he had his family settle down but the gods have other plans. Needless to say a further twist if fate sees Lucius head back to Rome, and a new character, a young lad Diocles joins Luscious. How are their fates entwined. Read on. Another great book in the series
Miller's craft is now well established and Roman is a satisfying addition to this series. I appreciate his inclusion of historical facts at the end of each book that provide context and an outline of the framework he used in weaving the story we just read, helping us better understand the real versus the likely versus poetic license. I had not heard of Lucius Domitius prior to these books and clearly he was an interesting individual wrapped up in a pivotal period of history. Looking forward to book seven.
Hector Miller does extensive reserarch for his writing. These books in the Thrice Named Man series are proof of this fact. We;; developed characters some based upon real people from the annals of histry and many fictional but all well developed and all interesting. Action, plots within plots and more make for exciting reading...!
I have read every book in this series and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Roman also delivers by weaving history with excellent fictional characters and plots. Highly recommend this series!
This book was another great read in the brilliant series. Only drawback that is continue to experience is the books are too short! Can't wait for book seven. Thanks for the ride Hector!
I was certain VI would be the last but suddenly I am looking forward to VII. I think the misfortune that Lucius encountered, including the death of Kniva made the story feel a little more real.
The series has turned into a compulsion. A great telling if a story firmly rooted in history. The author is obviously a vinophile and likes his steaks rare. Mouthwatering descriptions peppered throughout the tale.
This is definitely one of my favorite series but at the same ime one of the series that frustrate me the most. I just don't want it each book to end...
Another fascinating episode in the Trice Named Man series. . I appear to reach the end of these books so quickly. I trust that we will not have to wait too long for the next episode.
This book is the last one written as a series. I have enjoyed each book, the author is well versed in the history. So I find them to be accurate as well as entertaining . I now have to wait for book number 7!
The writer is an able storyteller and develop his characters expertly and play them in an well researched arena. Excellent and without the use of swearing and sex!
