Insulin Resistance Diet for Beginners is a tutorial guide with recipes for controlling (and hopefully reversing) insulin resistance. Released 24th Dec 2019 by Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 156 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
The introductory material and first section define the concepts used throughout the book, explaining metabolic disease in a manner which is non-threatening, layman accessible, and not too technical. The second section includes two weekly meal plans and recipes. The third section is split into chapters with breakfasts, vegetarian and vegan mains, poultry and seafood mains, beef and pork mains, sides and staples and desserts. The recipes are fairly appealing, simple, and made with easily sourced ingredients. The end sections include some metric conversions, ingredient information, resource links and more.
This is a no-nonsense 'do-able' plan with included sample menus and recipes. I am very much a blind follower when it comes to recipes and diet plans and this one feels reasonable and achievable. For people with a diagnosis of insulin resistance, this would be a good and positive plan of action. The recipes follow the same format throughout. A short description with a header containing extra info labels such as 'dairy free', 'super quick', 'gluten free', 'vegetarian', etc is followed by a sidebar which contains info about the prep method and yields. Recipe ingredients are listed in a sidebar bullet point list with measurements in US standard measures. (There is a measurement conversion table included at the back of the book, but it's a hassle not to have them included). The cooking instructions (listed in sequential order) are easy to follow and efficiently written. Nutritional info is provided in the page footer under the cooking instructions with calories, carbs, glycemic load, protein, fibre, fats, and sodium listed.
My only quibbles with the book (and it's almost universal with the newer crop of cookery and lifestyle books the last year) is that there are very few photos of finished dishes and none of recipe preparation. None of the recipes are extremely complex, so the omission isn't crippling. The photos which are included are clear and appealing and are in color (see cover photo for an example). The other potential issue is that this book is aimed at readers who have no complicating factors, such as inflammatory or auto-immune disorders in addition to a diagnosis of pre-diabetes.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
First of all, this book is amazing! It's not only a cookbook, the whole first section has very valuable information on insulin, how it works and how an insulin resistant diet is benefitical to you. As well, there's two weeks of meal planning which is also very useful and incredible. Lastly, there's so many delicious recipes to try! There is several recipes for everyone: vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free etc etc. All the recipes are also very simple, approx 4 steps, most take around half an hour and have less than 5 ingredients! It makes following a recipe and meal plan very accessible! In my first picture is the "Curried White Bean Dip", which was much easier and more tasty than I expected! It also yields a lot for super cheap and was enjoyed by 5 people with leftovers! Great for snacking, parties etc. The second picture is the "Cabbage Rolls in a Bowl", which was ironic to make considering I love cabbage rolls and never tried to make them due to the effort and time. This recipe tastes almost identical to the cabbage rolls I love, with less time and effort! My one critic would be that I would add a little tomato sauce to it to give it a little more of a sauce, however it was perfect if you're not a tomato fan. My third picture is the "Spicy Red Thai Noodles", which is originally a vegan recipe in which I added chicken and used chicken stock instead. I actually think it would have been satisfactory without these adjustments, we don't eat vegan so I assumed it needed some meat but it really didn't! I did also added broccoli and green onion, however that was just a personal touch and again was not needed. Tasted great though and again was very simple. All in all, this book is well written, easy to grasp, easy to make and apply to daily life and a very fulfilling source for an insulin resistant meal plan! Thanks Marlee!
Author Marlee Coldwell is a registered dietitian, and her book is based on current science; no fad diets here! In the first chapter of Insulin Resistance Diet for Beginners, she clearly explains the connection between insulin and metabolism and the role of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and the place for each in our diet. (I love her about comment about selecting carbohydrates that are “closer to the farm.) She explains how insulin resistance develops in a way that is easy to understand. The second chapter is a chapter of encouragement, “Five Steps to Overcome Insulin Resistance.” Coldwell speaks to possibilities for improvement and treating oneself with kindness, not beating oneself over the head. A two-week meal plan and recipes are provided to assist the household meal planner in getting off to a good start, followed by more recipes to continue healthy habits. The recipes use a minimal number of ingredients and have very reasonable prep and cooking time for a busy lifestyle. I am grateful to have received a copy of this wonderful book from Rockridge Press in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review, and received no monetary compensation.
With 3 family members dealing with PCOS, insulin resistance is an important topic in our household. This cookbook gives our family the ability to address insulin resistance AND eat tasty meals. I especially enjoy the 2-week meal plan with recipes, allowing us to get started using the book immediately. The remainder of the book has chapters for Breakfast, Vegetarian/Vegan, Poultry/Seafood, Beef/Pork, Snacks/Sides/Desserts, Sauces/Dressings. At the end of the book, there is a helpful food list showing the glycemic index/load which helps with making smart choices. Highly recommended for those ready to take control of their health. Thanks go to NetGalley and Rockridge Press for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
I really appreciate this book in its entirety as I was seeking a Insulin resistance diet and this book came at the perfect time. The author did a excellent job of providing sensible eating and receipes that are simple to follow . The book also provides a description for the reader of metabolic disease so we can understand our blood sugar and insulin resistance. I enjoy the two weekly meal plans and all the recipes. I appreciate as a strict vegetarian that she included vegetarian receipes. This is a book to keep on your shelf for years to come. Very well done to the author.
Thank you Callisto Publishing for letting me read this book for my honest review. If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would. This cookbook is more than just a cookbook. It includes the science behind insulin resistance and ways to reduce resistance to live a healthier lifestyle. The recipes look easy to prepare, however, my family wouldn't eat 90% of the recipes included based on their likes and mainly dislikes. This cookbook would be great for someone who didn't have a picky crew to cook for, which was looking for healthy, low glycemic foods.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Very informative recipe book with lots of great recipes. The author does an excellent job reviewing foods that are low sugar and salt as well as beneficial for those that are insulin resistant. The author goes over the reasons why the body might become insulin resistant and what can be done to reverse that condition. My only complaint is that the author did not include any photos of the finished meals and it was a little too heavy on the medical explanation.
The recipes included are simple and use common ingredients. The cooking and substitution tips included with the recipes help to make the recipes more practical. I would have liked to see more pictures of the recipes included.
Its an informative book. Doctors too dont tell you that your hypertension is because of insulin resistance. And in this book its clearly mentioned and steps to overcome it.
I am following some advices from the book. And on the way to reduce insulin resistance.
I found this book very informative about the different insulin resistant foods. As well as a handy chart listing the carb on most food groups for comparing.
This book has the typical beginning overview and descriptions but has some really good recipes and mock 2 weeks of planned meals as well as pantry staples lists to help get you started.
