Sia Mara #2

A Precarious Magic

Rate this book

For millennia, the Sia Mara have hidden from humanity in magical underwater refuges. Once they had seven of them. Only six remain.

What happened to Wai Pa?

For Fen, the only known survivor of the fallen refuge, the answer could mean life or death. After an unprecedented series of events, she now represents Wai Pa on the Sia Maran Great Council. But she also knows a secret: her mother claimed the city of Val Kyr was responsible for the disaster that destroyed their home.

When Gaelith — gifted healer, powerful mage, anticipated future queen of Syl Var, and Fen’s friend — disappears, Fen is quick to suspect the delegation from Val Kyr. Have they kidnapped Gaelith? Do they still want to murder Fen herself? Are they planning to destroy the city of Syl Var next?

And what can she do to stop them?

Amazing sequel to A Lonely Magic

A Precarious Magic immediately follows a Lonely Magic, where Fen is ripped from her horrible life in Chicago and thrust into the undersea world of the Sia Mara. Practically no time has passed between where
book one ends and the second book begins.

Fen is still completely confused and disgruntled by the sudden learning that she is par Sia Maran, in essence a mermaid, and the sole survivor of an entire city. In fact only a day has passed when Fen wakes up in book two. With no family and no home, much like most of her life in Chicago, she feels the crushing despair of maybe being stuck here forever. The only friends she’s made so far are either suspiciously missing or searching the city and she feels abandoned and lonely. Of course we all know that just leads Fen into trouble yet again! When word is heard that Gaelith has decided to accompany the Val Kyr to their homeland to fix some immense problem and both her brothers will be part of a convoy to collect her Fen decides to she will not be abandoned again and will not be left behind...shocker

The book follows Fen to the arctic where many mishaps occur as she fumbles along with her awakening magic. Elfie the AI is still a cool drink of water that Fen can always rely on and together can they possibly save the city of Val Kyr from its dismal fate?!
It’s a wonderful story of an outsider trying to find their niche in the world, a completely new world in fact. The desire to find someone, anyone from her bloodline, to feel truly accepted and part of this new world is a feeling many readers can relate to. Finding someone that can give her a glimpse into her mother’s life before Chicago pulls on the readers heartstrings and drives Fen to say and do some of the risqué things we’ve all come to love from the first book. The angsty romance blossoming that we felt between Fen and Kaio in the first book transfers to the second, although sometimes it feels like Kaio may return the feelings and sometimes it seems he doesn’t care. Thankfully it is only an undertone of the entire story as yet again I am left feeling let down that neither acknowledges or reacts to their feelings, but man does Luke show up to give Kaio a run for his money.
The book again leaves off where another book can, and hopefully will, continue the story! I have to know who Fen ends up with, amongst other things...no spoilers here!

Superb

Read both books in this series in quick succession.
The storyline is thought provoking and original, the characters very real and developing throughout, the writing style eminently readable (and well edited). There’s even a hint of romance to keep the interest.

Normally I only pick a series with three or fewer books as I get bored but I can honestly say that I wish there were more in this one. I note that the author has set up the ending to allow for further books and I really look forward to reading them.

A fascinating read

I've not been one to read science fiction or fantasy. But, then, I "met" S.J. Wynde and I can't say enough good things about her writing.
Book Two in her Sia Mara series has every possible happening: suspense, drama, romance, action, magic...it's all there. Only bad point, for me, is the over use if the F-bomb. In most cases, it is totally unnecessary. Sarah is a master storyteller. Sure hope to see more books in thevSia Mara series soon.

Heroine is annoying as ___. Her immediate reaction is either to freeze or whine or overreact. Interesting world building, but couldn't connect to the main character.
