I really enjoyed this story, and really enjoyed the references to my hometown. Where Sci-Fi is not really my genre is where I was lost a little. I could easily see a sequel with Brick coming later, and perhaps a prequel series that is more in the crime thriller category detailing his police career. (The prequel would be more my preferred genre.) I did get stumbled a few times by some of the grammatical errors, but those could be overlooked for the story.
Don’t let the several months it took for me to finish this book deter you, it’s a ton of fun, quickly paced, and less than 200 pages. It was my ‘travel book’ so during the pandemic it didn’t get opened as as frequently as it would have otherwise.
This book takes place over the course of a single day in the fictional town of Noisy River, NM (though heavily influenced by the author’s hometown of Ruisodo). Several seemingly disparate characters converge as a battle beyond our comprehension comes to a boil after a length of time likewise beyond our comprehension. Equal parts mystery, detective story, and weird fiction, with a few surprises sprinkled in (I’m looking at you Chapter 27).
