The Great Pyrenees is an exceptionally old breed, developed hundreds of years ago in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain. Developed by shepherds to live among and defend the flock from large, vicious predators, they had to be powerful—but they also had to be gentle enough to be trusted with newborn lambs. This breed is exceptionally large, often greater than a hundred pounds, but due to their usually gentle, affectionate demeanor towards human children, the dogs make excellent family pets as well. An effective flock guardian has to be hardworking, loyal, and able to think independently. That ability to think independently can sometimes lead this canine to be stubborn when it comes to training, but make no mistake, with the proper attitude and training tools, you can teach these intelligent animals both basic and advanced commands. This book will ensure that you achieve greater insight into the Great Pyrenees breed and help you determine if this majestic canine is right for you and your home. Very helpful read overall as we plan for a Great Pyrenees pup late October 2023! I will caveat that we both grew up with dogs but will be new dog owners ourselves with this puppy. The guide covers a wide variety of topics in a relatively comprehensive manner. It paints a thorough picture of the breed and gets into good detail on certain training/instructional sections; I wish it went a little deeper to the same extent on a few others.

Overall would recommend!

The Great Pyrenees can be the best dog you have ever owned or it can be a nightmare if you don't understand the breed. This book gives beginners eyesight into basic knowledge of these majestic animals. I've trained Rottweilers and German Shepherds for Shutzhund and to be family pets. Pyrs are still teaching me the basics to understanding what they require in terms of living with them harmoniously so they can live a great life and be an asset to you. Read this book prior to getting a Great Pyrenees. It should be mandatory reading for all perspective owners.
