An actuary of profession, Robert started writing his debut novel Elements Unleashed in 2015, finishing it in 2019. Inspired by Brandon Sanderson, J.R.R. Tolkien and George R.R. Martin, he aims to write easy-to-read fantasy novels with multiple POV characters. Currently, he's working on his third installment in the Timekeeper Chronicles series.
A decent debut that did not quite resonate with me.
Allow me to elaborate: I liked the style of writing. It is an easy and fluent style of writing that I enjoyed reading. The idea of the plot is interesting and had potential, which was also why I finished the novel.
But unfortunately, I didn't quite like any of the main characters. They're all different and follow their unique story, and while some come together at the end (and probably will at the end of the series), none of them really connected with me. I read several chapters a day but found myself too often wondering whenever starting a new POV: wait, who was this again?
The same goes for the events that happen. I stayed confused throughout the book as to whom belonged to which country or faction or what their intentions were. At the end .
Overall, it's a decent debut but I think the plot trips over itself because of the many POVs, which is why I feel it never quite reaches it potential.
This is an exciting fantasy novel unfolding a world of bloody fights between clans in a medieval setting. The elements of earth, wind and fire have woken up and are returning to the people who are learning to control their powers. The book smells like the Lord of the Rings or the Game of Thrones, but is more fantastic and involves things that happened 700 years ago. The storylines from several characters in the end converge but the reunion does not come with a solution; this is only part 1 of the time-keeper chronicles. I am not a regular fantasy reader, I find this book difficult to judge, but I was caught by its pace.
A mixture of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera and Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, but with the multiple POV style favored by G.R.R Martin and others. This Author has only just started out, but it is one hell of a start!
In the beginning I’ve had a bit of difficulty to get to know all characters, but that is something I always experencience when reading fantasy with a lot of story lines. The more I got to know the characters, the more I wanted to read. All in all, a nice build up to the second book of the series.
Elements Unleashed is the start of the Timekeeper chronicles by Robert Kroon. Even though the cover is quite simple, the synopsis sounded exciting. Making me looking forward to reading this debut. What will this book have in store?
I liked the elements in the story and most characters have a nice personality. Once you get a hold on all the different storylines, it is a bit easier to read. For a debut, the writing style is good and worldbuidling is done really nicely.
