Death, it seems, isn’t always the end.

I was a soldier, fighting for the lives of the whole damned world, when I went and got myself obliterated by this alien f*ck.

I figured that was it. Game over, done. But then I woke up in a different body, in a strange world full of dust and ruins, with awesome martial arts skills I’d never had before. Not to mention a chi gift thing that seemed to work a lot like magic.

I had no clue why or how it all happened. All I knew was that there were these monster girls I was supposed to protect from an endless horde of semi-human things that wanted us all dead.

And there were these words seared into my brain like a motivational quote:

You can save them. You can save ALL of them.

Of course, I had no clue who the words referred to, whether there was any truth to them at all, or where to f*cking begin.

Rogan’s Monsters: Wastelands follows our hero's sword-swinging adventure across the wastes of a strange new world. It is the first book in a harem series that includes isekai, wuxia, xianxia elements (martial arts and magic), as well as a few gamelit mechanisms for good measure. Set (mostly) in a post-apocalyptic world, it contains violence, nudity, and sex, as well as alien invasions, wraiths, and monster girls.

Read at your own risk.

Not for me. I had a hard time getting through this one. With these types of stories there needs to be one of two things to be enjoyable. Either good characters or a good magic system. The stories for these kind of books are all kind of similar so it is hard to have the story be the thing that stands out. This book didn't have good characters or a good magic system. There was hardly any dialogue in this book. There was probably 15 ages of internal monologue, speculation, or descriptions for every 2 sentences of dialogue. It is hard to get any character development or for me to care at all about a character if they hardly ever speak. The magic system was poorly written. It didn't explain much of how it worked. The world building was also poor. I found myself skimming through most of it.

Reincarnation Fantasy With Xianxia Elements

This was a surprisingly fun book. As with many reincarnation stories, MC dies at the beginning and gets reincarnated. Except instead of a different world, to a devastated Earth, hundreds of years in the future.

He arrives in the middle of a battle, with a body much more powerful than his previous one, and an innate knowledge on how to use chi do devastate his enemies.

Aside from him all other characters who are traveling with him are female and each one follows a specific archetype: warrior, rogue, alchemist, etc. Dialog between them is good and sex scenes are decent.

A good bet for people who like harem or reincarnation stories.

Hot garbage

Ok so I only got to 66%. The MC is a slave .... Yes literally a slave to a self centered egotistical princess and he somehow keeps making excuses for her as to why that's ok and expected of her because shes a pampered princess. Instead of doing everything he can to get out of the enslavement he is trying to just deal with it because she's pretty. Don't waist your time with this crap.

Nothing groundbreaking, but good

The first few chapters were a bit rough to make it through and having finished the book, I feel that most of the info from those first few chapters was irrelevant as it was mostly undone one the story got going.

I appreciated the few twists the story had and the writing and editing were on point. There's a few questions unanswered, but aside from that, it was a simple and straightforward book.

There's nothing wrong with the story, it just didn't blow my mind, so "only" four stars.

Pretty bad

The MC is an idiot, the plot has no logic to it, the characters are very shallow, and the whole thing feels bland and uninteresting. I got to a out 80% and just couldn't take it anymore.

Surprisingly good book

This is surprisingly good.
The book starts where earth is attacked by aliens(but aliens are goblins & wraiths who can use magic) and the MC dies in the hands of a wraith to be woken up in a much stronger body of the same name 600 years later on the same earth.

It was fun, the only blowback is the progression is little shorter.

Very enjoyable.

I enjoyed reading this book and really liked how the author worked to give us surprises during the story that keep me guessing about what is going to happen next.

Not bad at all.

Figured I'd read all his other books, so picked this one up as well. Not half bad at all.. the end of the book was definitely a shock, though.

This first volume of this fantasy-isekai (teleported to the future of the same world) novel series has a lot of things left unanswered at the beginning of the story. Why 600+ years into the future, and how in the heck did they get the main character that was before a human to another species and being in the future (without retaining memories, but having a ton of abilities that can be used if only the main character remembers to use them). This first volume is extremely confusing because of the many plot holes and things not explained. Why did the main character suddenly appear with that group? why is he supposed to guard and defend this group? why did the author write that Magic ability-mana-aether-qi-ki-etc. is recharged by having intercourse and why is the main character the only guy with the rest of the retinue are all girls...(to make it a harem story) buy main character is used as a mana battery and although the author and main character only think about sex, all of the time, sex is not really a way in any world, much less this one, where one recharges mana. So why does the author keep on using pop-culture references if the years are not current to the story and nobody in that future understands them?
The author and main character are emotionally challenged and have very little to no emotional intelligence. Story is sexually centered and the stories, encounters aren't that interesting or entertaining. Other than that, the author is very creative in the different species that the main character services...
Although this fantasy-isekai to the future series, has at least three volumes, the third volume was published on 2020, so either the series was concluded or it was abandoned. The thing is there is no main plot arc or important secondary arcs to this story. This group of people are just crossing territory and going somewhere, but main character has no purpose and story is just sex, encountering enemies, encountering new members of the retinue-harem, and repeat.

Three stars is pretty good

I liked this story, although it is a very light meal compared to the more solid steaks in scifi & fantasy. This lightness can be found in all aspects: world building, character building, plot, and even the harem aspect (which scenes are really few and far between, too few to be called ‘harem litrpg’, to my taste).
That being said, it still is a nice little bite. It’s entertaining enough, it has a good ending in the sense that one level is completed with a cliffhanger for the next level - without leaving the reader hanging out to dry.
Narration is okay too, he had no trouble keeping my interest, although he did read a bit staccato.

So overall, a pretty good listen - which makes it a solid three stars in my book (and also according to Audible’s definition of the stars).
If offered the chance, I would listen to the sequel too.

A note on the sample: this is not representative of the story, it’s from the introductory chapter and the actual story is based on a completely different premise. The introduction reads like a war story, whereas the rest of the story is actual litrpg, albeit with a twist. In my opinion that first chapter took way to long just for getting the MC to where the rest of the story (and the premise) takes place. If it were up to me, I’d choose a more representative piece as my book sample.

Interesting start if a bit short

With KU I have the opportunity to read authors I haven’t tried yet without an individual purchase, so I thought ai would try this book by Jack Porter. I haven’t read any of his other books so I don’t know if this is his typical style. The MC dies in battle with alien invaders but then gets ‘reincarnated’ or probably more like he ‘possessed’ the body of a Martial Warrior about 600 years later with near unmatched abilities, including ‘chi’ allowing him to do ranged attacks. He is tied to a group of females working their way through the wastelands to a hidden temple. There are massive amounts of enemies, magic users and most are now human hybrids with DNA mixed with various animals and insects. The character development is slow, but with a short book concentrating on action that could be expected. The story conveniently uses sex as a means to power up ones ‘chi’ so there are a few sex scenes thrown in which are not fade to black. All in all it was a good short read but not really super compelling, might read the next book if I come across it. Not really cultivation or wuxia as it is all left unexplained and unlearned so a bit of hybrid story itself.

We’ve seen this setup before, our protagonist is reincarnated into another body in a different world. I find myself in the last twenty minutes of the book waiting for the end (which is quite abrupt btw). This is not a good book. The story is shallow, the characters hollow, making it difficult for me to follow. Seriously, the story, along with the plot, is quite thin. The purported isekai, wuxia, xianxia, and gamelit elements are almost non-existent unless you’re counting a spinning sword and utilizing chi as an aphrodisiac those elements. Game stats are mentioned in passing but that’s about all. The harem elements? There are a few mild sexual encounters but they just seemed strange to me. I like the narrator. I’ve always liked Andrew Wehrlen but I’m so used to hearing him perform chaste non-fantasy roles that this one just didn’t fit him. How this book is getting five-star reviews is beyond me. Perhaps this is their first gamelit exposure. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

acceptable, forgettable, faintly annoying
Yes it has sex scenes. harem like elements (multiple female partners)
I was impressed with Monster Girl Hunter, and with Jungle King, so I thought I'd try more Jack Porter. I'm not as impressed with Rogan's Monsters. The MC is less likeable that the the two I've read. The main female character is unnecessarily aggravating. (is there a "how to write harem" handbook out there that tells young writers to include obnoxious characters?) The 'plot' is dull, and there are many confusing moments where characters act out with no apparent motive.
-The positive side is that despite not having any of the interesting unique touches his latter books would have, this face in the crowd harem book is still entertaining. I'm not a big fan of the MC, but he tries to do right some of the time, and I expect that he is going to grow into a better man.

Great Story

Rogan died in a battle died in the present and is somehow transported to a post apocalyptic future with magic in the form of chi into the body of a warrior master swordsman and chi user. Regaining consciousness in the middle of a battle he begins to learn to use his new powers keeping those in his charge safe. He is bound by an oath to a self absorbed princess and her servant as they travel through the wasted to reach a mysterious temple. Picking up others on the way they battle an evil Wraith that wants to capture him and his friends. Excellent writing with characters that you come to care about, this is a very enjoyable read that will keep you turning pages. I strongly recommend this book.

Excellent Fantasy

Another pleasant surprise with this fantasy story about someone being tossed into the future. The author comes up with a whole book worth of wonder and excitement. So far I’ve enjoyed it completely and am pleasantly surprised Book 2 is waiting in the wings. The best part of reading this book is the inability to predict exactly what is going to happen next. I’ve tried go guess and missed on both occasions. What does occur has greatly added to the storyline with new characters and contributions. I’ll definitely continue this series and highly recommend it so far.

Functionally complete story using some light isekai and wuxia elements but fundamentally lacking depth in the characters, world and narrative structure. The story feels like its going through a checklist on the "Hero's Journey", the characters feel very two-dimensional with the protagonist being fairly unrelatable and the ladies of the cast lacking in vibrancy and depth.

Despite that, the three book series does have a definite idea of where it is going and at least feels mostly consistent within itself, with a definite "end-point" at the finale of book three. Not the worst way to spend a night reading in bed, but a long way from being in my top 100.

Surprisingly good.

This isn't the type of book that I would normally read, and for the first few chapters I had my doubts about whether or not I would continue. I typically stick to fantasy novels, and this story has some strong science fiction elements. After reading several chapters, however, it surprised me, and I found myself turning page after page. I find myself intrigued to see how the rest of the story turns out. I would definitely recommend others to give it a shot. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised as well.

Grabs you from the first page

First book of the author that I have read. Very surprised at how quick I got sucked into the story. I felt that the main character was interesting and I wanted to see what he does. I am trying not to give away any of the plot, but I will say that there is a very unusual mix of sci-fi and fantasy. I will be reading the next book in the series and I am looking forward to the authors other books.

Oh yuck! I'm soooooooo sorry that I picked this up. And I apologize to the author. So since I literally can't give a objective review, I won't. I hadn't realized that this was a harem litRPG... and it's definitely not my cup of tea...

Andrew B Wehrlen isn't a narrator that I can recommend no matter what genre he might pick up and narrate. He's got a technique, pausing between sentences, and that just bugs the heck out of me...

I read this book some time ago. I really liked description and a premise. Man, it was such a huge disappointment. Can't tell why without spoilers, but completely not what I was expecting, and in not a good way. Also another unfinished book. In my times it used to take only one tome to tell a complete story.

Has a lot of potential

I liked it. I thought the characters were interesting though the chi-draining and Lady Gamma herself were a bit of a turn off. It’s only the first book and I already like Rohan’s progression. I’m looking forward to the sequels. Bottomline, this’s a good book.

Enjoyable

A good read. A little light on story, as both the reader and MC are kept in the dark about much. A few light sexy scenes, nothing too crazy. In all, I enjoyed ‘this book and look forward to more, and hopefully finding out more about the overall world/story.

Good entertaining read

Good story, entertaining, and an interesting twist to create a world. The way this world is made is different than most, a little sad, but well done. MC is a little weak willed imo, but good story overall.

Good wasteland fun

Good harem fun in the post apocalyptic wasteland. Not much character power growth here but hope next book has some progression on the mc' s power. Still enjoyed the character development and interaction. Want the second book sooner than later.

Really Good

It really doesn't matter what genre so long as it floats your boat. What does matter is an author's ability to pace all the elements that allows character development along side the enticement of the venue. Jack 0994533 was successful!

Very good book

What a interesting twist on the cultivation wuxia style story. I really liked the action scenes and martial arts style Rogan uses. I recommend trying out this book series.
