◆ 1. The Truth About Blockchain
▪ Blockchain will revolutionize business, but it’s going to take decades to do so. This is because it’s a foundational technology that will require broad technological, regulatory, and social coordination to implement. Blockchain, the technology at the heart of bitcoin and other virtual currencies, is an open, distributed ledger that can efficiently, verifiably, and permanently record transactions between two parties. The adoption of TCP/IP suggests blockchain will follow a fairly predictable pattern of development, so it’s not too early for businesses to start planning. With a 2 × 2 framework that maps the novelty and complexity of blockchain applications, managers can assess the state of blockchain development in any . evaluate strategic investments in their own blockchain capabilities. Organizations can develop their blockchain capabilities by starting with single-use applications and then, over time, move into more complex, novel, and ultimately transformative ones
◆ 3. The Blockchain Will Do to the Financial System What the Internet Did to Media
▪ The world’s existing financial system is very complex, and that complexity creates risk. A new decentralized, cryptocurrency-based financial system could help reduce risk, open up the financial system to people who are currently excluded, and enable greater competition.
◆ 7. How Blockchain Is Changing Finance
▪ Our antiquated financial system is inefficient, vulnerable to attack, exclusionary, and resistant to change. Blockchain could provide solutions to this innovation logjam. Cryptocurrency allows any two or more parties to forge agreements, make transactions, and build value without relying on intermediaries to verify their identities, establish trust, and perform other administrative tasks. Blockchain enables companies of any size to raise money in a peer-to-peer, global, distributed way through initial coin offerings (ICOs). Blockchain could upend a number of complex intermediate functions in the financial industry, but whether this is the end of banking as we know it may depend on how incumbents react. Blockchain is not an existential threat to companies that embrace the new technology paradigm and disrupt from within.
◆ 8. As Cryptocurrencies Rise, Who Needs Banks?
▪ The U.S. dollar and other reserve currencies have historically performed well both as a medium of exchange and as a store of value. Cryptocurrencies don’t do well at either of these yet, but they’re still going to usher in a lot of disruption to the financial system. People are using cash less and less often, and new entrants that are digitizing money are bypassing the established financial system. In East Africa, for example, mobile phone companies leapfrogged banks as payment intermediaries. Blockchain has an advantage as a digitized currency because it offers a complete, self-contained alternative to the traditional payment transfer system; it is as if all bitcoin users are banking with the same bank. Using cryptocurrency presents challenges. Users need to worry about an exchange rate and uncertainty around the storage value of cryptocurrency. New regulations may enable a separation of the exchange and storage functions of money. Commercial banks may continue to hold our money balances in traditional currencies and make loans to businesses with those balances, but transactions may be intermediated by separate payment technologies
◆ 10. What Blockchain Means for the Sharing Economy
▪ Today’s internet giants—think Facebook, Google, and Twitter—rely on the contributions of their users to generate value within their own platforms. The problem with this model is that most of the value produced by the crowd is captured by the large intermediaries that operate the platforms. Blockchain could change this imbalance. Blockchain offers an opportunity for increased “cooperativism,” where we move toward a true sharing or collaborative economy—one that is not controlled by a few large intermediary operators, but that is governed by and for the people. A collaborative economy should not be taken for granted. Just as the internet has evolved from a highly decentralized infrastructure into a system controlled by a few large operators, there is always the risk that giants will eventually form in the blockchain space.
◆ 11. How Blockchain Can Help Marketers Build Better Relationships with Their Customers
▪ Blockchain’s ability to shrink payment frictions and make intermediaries fade away means it has enormous potential to disrupt marketing. Blockchain-enabled technology could allow marketers to recapture revenue lost to ad blockers and to disrupt the Google-Facebook advertising duopoly by adopting a new model: paying consumers directly for their attention with micropayments. Fraud verification via blockchain, paired with a micropayment system, could reduce spam and phishing emails, fix the problem of fake social media accounts, and prevent denial-of-service attacks. Blockchain could reinforce the ownership and copyright protection of online editorial content, allowing content creators, whether professional or amateur, to be fairly compensated for their creations.
◆ 15. Using Blockchain to Keep Public Data Public
▪ The leaders of our governments and economies are waging a war on data. They have made it acceptable to manipulate raw data in a way that benefits them financially or politically—and it has lowered public confidence in the veracity of information. Public blockchains could help reverse this. Recording a transaction on a public blockchain is the digital equivalent of writing something in stone. It’s publicly available, permanently, for anyone to see and verify
I really have no idea about the concept of blockchain before reading this book. Although I always come across this word often whenever I read business articles and listen to podcasts.
For someone like me who wants to understand the nature and issues of this emerging technogy, this book really helped me a lot. The articles in this book provide the foundational knowledge such as what is it, how it affects businesses and society as a whole, and how it affects the environment.
The great thing about the collection of articles is that it gives you the ability to weigh in multiple perspective of the subject. The authors, who are distinguished in their respective field, clearly brings the topic in multiple angles. This prompted me to get more curious about the topic.
This book is highly recommended for those who like to understand the blockchain technology in a nontechnical way.
This was a really informative book that talked about all the different applications of blockchain outside of just cryptocurrency. It's a great overview if you want a general understanding of the technology and all the potential fields that it could be useful in. The drawbacks are that it is pretty dense. I read it as an audiobook and it was hard to stay engaged in a couple of the chapters. I sometimes felt like I was slogging through it. But overall I'm glad I read it. It is definitely not like alot of the other blockchain books out there, which seem to be more about how to get rich with cryptocirrency.
2017-2018 tarihli makalelerin toplandığı bir kitap. Yüzeysel fakat sıfır bilgili insanlar için faydalı bilgiler içeriyor. Teknolojinin bu kadar hızlı geliştiği dönemde 2-3 yıllık yüzeysel makalelerin kitap haline getirilmesi pek mantıklı gelmedi. Online kitap almanın zararını gördüm :)
this book helped quite a bit in my understanding of blockchain in a way that was digestible and not overly technical. it consists of a compilation of articles written by authors who are very qualified and knowledgeable in their fields to be breaking down the topic. the information is organised very well, and the "takeaways" portion at the end of each section serves as a nice summary that i appreciated very much. i would also say that the overall book length is also just right to engage me for long enough, and not get too boring, while covering enough ground. if you're not yet super knowledgeable on blockchain and wish to learn more, i would definitely recommend this book!
I was searching for good books on Blockchain subject, then I zeroed down on this book. I am happy to share that this is really nice book to understand blockchain as a subject. It wouldn't just tell you about the history of Blockchain, but also about, it's technology landscape, how it can help your business, industry, or society as a whole; and, how the Blockchain future looks like. After completing this book, you will have a fair understanding on Blockchain which will help you to actively participate in Blockchain discussions.
A compilation of case studies around blockchain. This books serves as a holistic guide about blockchain technology potential. It doesn't go into details of specific use cases or discusses any particular companies business strategy around DLT, however, provides some glimpses in how various companies are leveraging blockchain in areas like - Cryptocurrency as we know it , Digital art and creatives, marketing, supply chain to name a few.
Listened to this on Hoopla. For those interested, the HBR is a good resource for many business related topics. I believe having one place with their top articles in a category is great. Enjoyed getting some insights on Blockchain, and although the book is already a few years old, the info is very relevant.
Usual collection of articles. Lot of overlap and repetition among the article sections. Many parts of the content are now outdated or not relevant anymore. Offers a quick glance on topics, but it would need a serious refresh.
Good collection of blockchain related content combined to make a valuable book. Some sections get repetitive in terms of explaining what blockchain is, but I enjoyed it overall. It covers aspects related to security, usability, sustainability and a bit about its future too. A decent read.
Use cases felt generic. A lot of presumptions were made. I think a stronger, deeper core of articles were needed. Additionally a deeply antagonistic article focusing on cons of blockchain and reasons that blockchain may not thrive would have been beneficial.
possibly only 1 - 2 chapters that are worth reading - the rest just "Cliffs Notes" or generic newspaper articles that can be fluffy despite the titles.
a little much "could" and a little lacking in "can"/actual technical explanation. my mistake to expect much cohesion from a business compendium. essential, while reading and in the wild, to remain critical of any lack in critical examination of high energy consumption technologies and the prevalence of blind adapt or die attitudes in business in general. we need to make sure our new technologies are sustainable before we let our imaginations (and investments) run away with ourselves.
Might be a bit dense of a subject matter for someone not used to more factual, complex reading or new to it. I found the book quite nicely written and easy to understand where the technology currently is and where it could be applied in the future. If only more realized the value of the technology and implemented it.
