Magic. Mayhem. Mystery. Freedom has a price for those afflicted with curses. Lucifer Thatch, devilishly handsome Witchkin extraordinaire, had given up everything to be with Abigail MacQuillan, the witch he his human body, his comfortable life as a powerful apprentice, and his magic. For thirty long years he has endured living in the Morty Realm, putting up with Abigail’s husband, adopted children, and being trapped in a form he hates. When spies from the Raven Court threaten Abby and the life they’ve built in the Morty Realm, Lucifer has newfound reason to become a human again and embrace his powers to protect the woman he loves. Yet freeing himself seems impossible. Lucifer has been cursed to spend eternity as a cat. He will do anything to free himself, but what if the cure is worse than the curse? This is a spin-off series of Womby’s School for Wayward Witches and The Trouble with Hedge Witches.
Lucifer Thatch has cursed into the shape of a cat since his teenage years after leaving his apprenticeship with The Witch of Nightmares because of how she was treating his best friend/crush Abigail. More than 30 years later, they are still trying to remove his curse via kitty sex magic (since he is an incubus) during the full moon. Ravens have started watching the house, at the behest of the Raven Queen. And it’s like Abigail is starting to treat him as being more cat than man, and he may be in danger of losing his humanity completely if he stays a cat for too much longer. And his suspicious brother Felix is visiting with Abigail’s adopted daughter Clarissa, making Lucifer itch to scratch people and shred things, even though it means being put out in the snow like an animal.
Admittedly, I have several other Sarina Dorie books on my kindle, but I haven’t gotten around to reading them yet and started with this one since it was short. That said, I don’t know her Womby series beyond just reading the blurbs and a sample or two. Since this is the beginning of a spin-off series, I thought it would have an already established character striking out on his own series, and not have to worry about having read previous books. Wrong. This relies heavily on having read the previous books. It spends plenty of time re-hashing details from the previous books to fill in the blanks, trudging through pages of backstory (when really we just want to be pushing forward with a story. Whenever backstory creeps in, it means the pacing has come to a screeching halt to explain stuff). It is also chock full of characters and references from the earlier books, with a lot of it harking back to The Trouble with Hedge Witches series. Fans of the previous books will love seeing all of their favorite characters again. Even though this comes across as whimsical and cozy, there is a lot of talk about sex in it. The obsession it had about kitty sex magic weirded me out, as did the idea of turning the witch into a cat to have sex with Lucifer as cat. And I was terribly lost and bored with the whole meanderings about affinities, which made absolutely no sense to me. And, honestly, the way she treated Lucifer, I had to wonder why he stuck around. I mean, she kept putting him out in the snow and scolding him like she would a five-year-old, and she really didn’t listen to him at all, but then I probably need to read The Trouble with Hedge Witches to get a better appreciation for Abigail who I really wasn’t sold on in this book. It didn’t feel like Abigail was in love with Lucifer, if she ever was. I did love seeing him shred things though and itch to claw people. It should probably be mentioned that this is in serial format, which means that this was just one section of a larger book and doesn’t conclude here.
The plot is on target; a witch trapped in the body of a cat watching over the witch he loves. The fae are sending ravens to spy on them and Lucifer is desperate to reverse the spell that keeps him in his feline body.
My problem with this book is that although it is the first in a spin-off series from other series by this author, there’s a lot of backstory that needs to be addressed. I was confused from the get-go as to who or what Lucifer is and why Abagail’s powers seemed so diminished. It took a while for me to catch up and figure out what was going on. By the time I did, the story was almost over (a very short read).
Very little happened in this novel. I know there are other books to follow, and I can’t help feeling maybe one or two should be combined with this one to give me something more meaty to chew on. Not a bad story, but not what I expected.
Lucifer has found several ravens lately staking out his mistress’s house and now his evil brother is there and he is sure that Thatch is in league with the Raven Queen. When he sees Thatch leave with a raven on his shoulder, one he called Priscilla of all things - the name of their little sister, Lucifer brings his suspicions to Abbie. Abbie rebuffs all of them, and tries to convince him otherwise, but he is not buying it. Then, when Thatch returns after Christmas and is spending some alone time with Clarissa in the house, their Red Affinity magic combines and has some surprising consequences for Lucifer. This is the first book in this spin-off series. We know bits and pieces of Lucifer’s past from the other books, but I am interested in seeing where this series takes us. You don’t have to have read the previous books to enjoy this, but these books are like M&M’s. You can’t just stop at one.
The love story between Abigail and Lucy prevails. The connections between characters are fascinating. I don’t know why I didn’t catch on sooner but with this new knowledge, it is like visiting the characters and their personal stories again, through new eyes. I love this book and I definitely love Abigail and Lucifer.
Lucy, short for Lucifer is a human witch who as a teenager was turned into a cat, both because of his magic and his love for another witch named Abigail. During their early time together Lucy accidentally burned out Abigail's magic so they both are exiled to the human world. Together for over 30 years they've been trying to figure out how to change Lucy back. Then Abigail's charge falls in love with Lucy's brother and with all the sex magic flying around, they get the chance they've been waiting for.

I never knew trolls, krakens and other paranormals had such difficult romantic lives. Should a troll invite a romantic interest to visit him under his bridge What should a fairy do with a lazy muse who just hangs around the house. Fortunately there is a (knowledgeable?) helper that answers their questions through her column in several different newspapers like The Immortal Herald and the Undead Times . This is a fun read, especially at Halloween..
Well written and filled with action but then I've come to expect nothing less from this author, with a great storyline at once somewhat sad but also funny. The characters are like old friends brought to life on the page as they struggle their way through their trials and tribulations, just for once don't expect a happy ending all sunshine and rainbows they almost make it but it turns out that they still have work to do. Great read, Baz.
What a funny little pick me up. On a rainy day, it's a fun, short story to read. It references a lot of sexual things, duh it's a love advice column, so if you aren't into that, skip it. If you want something that makes you wonder how a kraken gets freaky or if a succubus takes work home then I definitely recommend this.
Engaging & intelligent. Exciting to learn more about these characters.
After reading the entire Womby's School series, it's wonderful to learn I have still more to learn about these characters, but from different angles of their stories. The writing is easy to read, quick to engage & very intoxicating to immerse yourself within.
This meshed well with the events in the main series of books. The story was intriguing and the characters were very interesting. Lucifer’s curse and struggle are well told. The character development is great.
This clearly sets up for future stories in this parallel story arc. It’s great reading and a superb love story.
Lucifer is a cat. He was changed into by his.grandmother. He has tried everything to turn back. It's been 39 years. What now he manages to turn back by accident. What will happen now. A good book for children and adults, enjoy!
Another great book by Sarina Dorie. Lucifer faces so many challenges to be with the love of his life, Abigail. He once again is human but for how long. Read and find out. A great book from start to finish.
I love all the characters in these books! I love all the different kinds of magic that the characters all have. The curses that they try to break are heartbreaking I’m so glad that I’ve never been cursed.
Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. It was an ok book. We meet Lucifer the cat...well a succubus turned into a cat when he used his magic to save the witch he loves. But living in the Morty realm with abby is what he wanted even of Baba turned him into a cat. Things are happening around the place...ravens are spying on Abby for the Raven Court and hes been killing them left and right. Abby enlists the help of a powerful witch to reinforce the wards on property but warned Lucifer that using his magic is affecting Abby hence the ravens. Will lucifer be able to abstain from using Magic around Abby?
This is a quick read. This is a spin off from another series but can be read without knowing anything from the one.
Lucifer is human that was cursed to be a cat. He want to return to his human form especially to help Abigail remain safe in the Morty realm. He possesses forbidden magic that many in the Fae ranks would exploit him for.
Read to find out why he was cursed to be a cat and what some of the things he has done to try to be human again. I know I want to read the rest of this series and because I enjoy books involving magic would like to read the other series by this author.
This book is a short spin-off from the Womby's School for Wayward Witches Series, giving a different point of view from that in the series. This book takes place about a year after The Witch’s Familiar (The Trouble With Hedge Witches Series Book Book 4) when Vega first turned Abigail into a cat so she and Lucifer could try to use touch magic (i.e., sex) to turn Lucifer back into a human. It relates the story of Abigail Lawrence and her cat familiar, Lucifer, now after thirty years living in the Morty realm, while Clarissa is teaching at Womby's School for Wayward Witches. It's an interesting story, giving background and a better understanding of why Lucifer is so grumpy. It's quite short. I recommend it should be read as part of the Son of a Succubus Series, and after or during reading the Womby's School for Wayward Witches series. I find it very enjoyable as part of the Womby's and Hedge Witch series. Vega Bloodmire, Clarissa's snippy, sarcastic roommate, is helping Abigail reverse Baba Nata's curse on Lucifer, which had turned him from being Abigail's human friend and lover into a cat almost thirty years ago. Lucifer is desperate to become human again before his cat's feral nature submerges his humanity completely. It continues in Curse of the Witching Hour.
This is the first book in this series which is a spinoff from the Womby's series. It takes up 30 years after he and Abby escaped to the Morty Realm and is told in Lucifer's point of view as a cat. This book fills in what he felt all during Abby's life, marrying Adam, and raising her adopted daughters then dealing with Adam's death.
Lucifer is concerned that ravens keep showing up from the Raven Court. He had pounced and killed 4 within a week. He prompts Abby to contact Vega Bloodmire, her daughter Clarissa's fellow teacher and roommate, to solicit help. Vega didn't believe her at first but as she was leaving to return to Womby's, Lucifer watched as she went around the outside of the house and redid the wards protecting Abby from the Raven Court.
Abby and Lucifer's wish has always been to break the curse put on him from Baba Nata and become a man again. Can they figure out how to break the curse? He has transformed before but always turned back into a cat. His fear is that he will turn feral and never be fully man again. The descriptions of being a cat and his internal thoughts in this book are very interesting.
I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.
"All he’d ever wanted was to be with Abigail. He’d wanted their first time together to be special." - Lucifer Thatch
30 years... 30 LONG years... Lucifer Thatch had been a cat. A cat that was a human, a Witchkin; former protege to Baba, the same witch that had cursed him to this form... A cat. He HAD to find a way to break the curse, so he could be with Abigail, the witchy woman that held his heart.
Abigail had lost her magic when Lucifer had inadvertently drained her, yet she still had an affinity for plants and herbs. Maybe together they could find a way to break the curse before the Fae discovered Abigail could still do magic? Something HAS to give... Lucifer can feel himself fading...
When Lucifer discovers what the REAL problem is, things go from bad to worse... Or do they?
An action packed quick and quirky read! Loved every minute of it!
I received an ARC of this no el from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I can’t seem to get enough of Lucifer Thatch’s story and I constantly find myself rooting for him. The guy did give up 30 years of his life to live as cat just to be with the love of his life. This is another piece of the puzzle solved slowly yet surely. It takes place 2/3 of the way into the Womby series so although it’s not necessary, I found it entertaining to read the situation over again from Lucifer’s perspective. Both him and Abigail are trying to figure out a way to restore him to his human form for good and they may find a temporary reprieve.
This is a short and sweet novel and I’m already well on my way t9 reading the next one.
Everyone thinks Lucifer is Abigail’s familiar, but he’s actually a human magically spelled to live as a cat. They’ve loved each other since they were teenagers apprenticed to a powerful witch, and through each day of the 30 years that that he has been cursed. And now it seems likely the Fae are stalking them in the Monty world. This book is narrated by Lucy with angst and longing to become a man again, to become Abby’s true lover. All their hopes to reverse the spell have been dashed by the powerful witch, Vega Bloodmire. Maybe Felix Thatch could help, but Lucy hates his brother with a passion. Passion? Can that break the curse? Hmmmmm....
I was given this book as a free review copy and happily give my review. I am a real Sarina Dorie fan, these days, having read quite a few of her books. I found this book a little hard to get into at the beginning but quickly found myself absorbed in the plot as I began to remember the characters from previous books. It is not necessary to read prior books, though. I can recommend to any fan of Witch books with a little twist. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Trapped for 30 years in the body of a cat by a wicked witch this story follows the efforts to try and return to his male form , Lucifer spots spies from the raven court and realises he needs to do this to protect his life long love Abby from being abducted. To say anymore would give spoilers so I totally recommend the reading of this superb book. I received this from the author with no obligation to review.
Lush detail and good prose isn't quite enough to make up for a story that drags along. I always enjoy tales of magic and this one has a lot of potential for good storytelling, unfortunately it doesn't deliver in that way. That being said, the writing was well done and if more time could be spent actually making the story flow and move faster,it might work.
A cat, no a man, no what is going on. A story with an interesting viewpoint---the cat's who's really a familiar. A look at family feelings, an animal's viewpoint and an explanation of the timeline in the Thatch family. Fun little story and a good lead in to the next installment.
I wasn't very wild about this. Written like a column for a newspaper, Jezzy gives advice to the sad, hurt and desperate paranormals. It's filled with double entendres and puns. It wasn't horribly written, it was kinda corny to me.
