There’s been a murder at Willow House. Further investigation uncovers a connection to a murder from almost one hundred years ago. Plus the Rock City Life photographer disappeared, leaving his girlfriend hurt. On the grounds of Willow House.
Something in the past has a score to settle. Harper is determined to find out what’s going on.
In this second entry in the series, Harper is starting to come to terms with her powers. An acceptance that was long held at bay – and an understanding that these things are benefits and not to be hidden – is finally coming to the fore and that pleases Aunt Hattie. Harper is the last in the line of Ryan women, it would be a shame to ignore such a big part of herself and her heritage.
Jones has built a wonderful small town atmosphere in this corner of Little Rock. I’d be hard pressed if I visited, to not look for Hattie’s Cauldron! Each volume I open brings a feeling of a visit with friends.
But make no mistake, there is mischief here too, and that’s right up Harper and Hattie’s alley, with help from the ever willing Jackson and Beatrix.
Start this series from the beginning. Not because it’s necessary to read them that way. They stand alone well. But because nestling in with these books is a great way to while away a couple of afternoons, with tea and something sweet, and imagine yourself on the couch at Hattie’s.
The following quote from CLOCKWORK PRINCE by Cassandra Clare came to mind after reading this story… “Lies and secrets, Tessa, they are like a cancer in the soul. They eat away what is good and leave only destruction behind.”
Harper is embracing her “do-over life” in Little Rock. Her attractive neighbor is now her boyfriend, she is more accepting of her aunt’s lifestyle, and has found a job that is fulfilling without being all-consuming. For the first time in her life, Harper is experiencing a positive work-life balance. There are unexpected, and life-changing, surprises for both Harper and her Aunt Hattie revealed in this story.
Harper is working with Dan at the magazine to turn-it-around similarly to how she did in New York before leaving her family’s lifestyle magazine. One of their employees, a photographer named Dex, comes up missing. Harper knows that she must act now to find Dex if there is any hope of finding him alive. The more that Harper investigates, the more secrets and lies she uncovers. She only hopes that she will not be too late to save her employee and friend.
This is a clean, entertaining, and intriguing, romantic mystery. Stacy M. Jones is a gifted storyteller who does not need to include profanity, sexual scenes, or graphic violence in her book in order to grab the reader’s attention and hold it until the final word. Kudos to Stacy!
This is another mystery series with an 'extra-normal' element. Harper is from a family whose women have gifts. Her aunt Hattie, with whom she lives, is a medium and can see ghosts. Harper is just figuring out what power she has -- psychometry, which is the ability to discern past events from touching physical items.
The pair become involved when the patriarch of the Willow family is found dead at the bottom of the grand staircase in the stately home -- a home that's been in the family for several hundred years and about which little is known in the community. Initially ruled an accident, details begin to emerge that hint at intent and Hattie is visited by the dead man's ghost. When Hattie's shop assistant is attacked and her boyfriend, a photographer, goes missing while trying to get shots of the home, the pair are sure there's more going on. Harper uses her 'in' with a local lifestyle magazine to do some interviews with the family and do some poking around as well.
There's a touch of romance as well but it's not overdone. The psychic abilities are treated in a very 'matter of fact' manner: neither glorified nor disdained. Basically, these are pretty normal people who just have this extra sense. So it didn't come off as ridiculously unbelievable or played for drama. In the end, it was a solid mystery and, though the psychic clues helped, solid physical evidence was there as well.
This is an entertaining paranormal women’s fiction series. Great cast of characters and storyline. Harper is 40 years old recently divorced and moved halfway across the country from Manhattan where she lived with her families wealth and ran their families magazine. After divorcing her husband which is a long story which you can read about in book one. She moved to Little Rock and now lives with her aunt. Her aunt is a psychic/witch who owns a little shop in the Heights neighborhood of Little Rock. Lost your mother a young age and spent some time in Little Rock with her aunt when she was younger. She never returns her and slowly beginning to find out that yes she has some abilities of her own as well. She also has a knack of getting entangled in investigations that a certain police detective wishes she wouldn’t at times. Her boyfriend a retired colonel from the army lives across the street trimmer and is also friends with her aunt. If you things have happened in the last couple of books that you should read before reading this one. Her skills are improving her life is improving and yet there is still trouble on the horizon. Read on to see where this story leads.
Harper’s life in little Rock working at a local publication is enjoyable, but it’s her life as an emerging psychic that is suspenseful and exciting. Working with her aunt Hattie, a well known local medium and witch, to develop her powers that were ignored until now (and Harper is her 40s) they come in handy.
Harper, her boyfriend Jackson and a host of locals work together to find their missing friend Dex, photographer for the same magazine where Harper works, and in a strange magical twist, everything ties together with murder at a beautiful local plantation home related to an earlier unsolved murder in the same home d same family - a fantastic story that is suspenseful, filled with twists and turns and excitement and a shocker of an ending!
A wonderfully written novel and an absolutely worthwhile read
The books in The Harper and Hattie series have all been AMAZING!!! This one was no exceptIon. Once I started it, I could not put it down until I was finished. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series! This author has superb communication with fans as well. I messaged her MONTHS ago to inquire as to when this book would be released. Not only did she message me with a date then, she also sent me a message just the other day to let !e know that it was now available on Amazon. Come on Summer 2020! I need to.see what the gang is up to next.
Harper Ryan is trying to find her version of the supernatural powers that most of the women in her family possess. In the meantime, she wants to write a magazine article about Willow Hall. Teddy Willow was pushed down the stairs at Willow Hall and died. When Harper starts looking at Teddy's death, she also needs to investigate her photographer's disappearance on the grounds of Willow Hall ... and the mystery about Stella Brown in the 1920s. Harper and her friends look at all the mysteries and relationships. It's a story that progresses well and keeps you reading to find out the who and the why of it all.
Where to start…I just love the mystery and the this one was great! I have family in Little Rock and have been there many times so street references are fun. Hattie’s shop would be great to visit. Harper’s a riot. Jackson’s fun. I really like Granger too. The “village” Hattie and Harper have is awesome…and growing. It’s just great! Looking forward to the next book!
This story is full of lots of interesting people-2 dead people seeking closure to who killed them & a missing child. I couldn't begin to figure out "who done it". I enjoyed how mysterious the story is all the way through. There is only 1 swear word. I received an ARC. This is my honest, voluntary opinion
Whew. What a storyline. There is no doubt in my mind, that with your abilities you could compare to a cozy mystery Stephen King (whom I've loved for thirty plus years. Absolutely mind blowing. I like it that you can't guess the bad gut or girl, keeps you guessing
Forget the (.) When a reviewing a word or title. Miss.=Mississippi. So very irritating. r
Your stories are fun but your detective Granger is absolutely irritating. DET. Pause Granger is how it sounds to the listener detective when abbreviated is DT for listening purposes omit the period.
Believable magic comes to the fore as a new woman joins Hattie and Harper in this fascinating murder mystery. Sarah is a definite plus to the group and she’s needed as they try to solve an old killing and a new one. It’s a twisted story I couldn’t put down.
This second book in the Harper & Hattie Magical Mystery series is entertaining. Harper is settling into her new life in Little Rock, getting more comfortable with her paranormal gifts and exploring what those abilities can be used for. The paranormal aspects of the story are very interesting and how they’re woven into the murder investigation is creative.
Ghosts, murder and greed conspire inside an old house! Each town has one of those old houses and this one is still in the hands of the same family. When the patriarch is murdered all hell breaks loose. Good story line.
I am enjoying these book. Could see this series on TV as a show. I love the characters they flow well together and they are funny as well. Awesome read moving on book 3
Teddy is dead, Dex is missing, and not one of the family is saying a word. Harper is on it and has some new help and growing abilities. Lots of plot twists, suspects, ghosts, and magic. Love this series!
I loved this book. Great writing paired with witches ghosts and relatable characters. Harper is starting her life over surrounded by a close knit group of supportive people while trying to find her power. Full of mystery and fast paced writing that will have you guessing til the very end!
With new friends and old, Harper & Hattie find themselves in the middle of a big mess that started decades ago. Well written story with lots of twists and turns. I look forward to reading more.
Stacy Jones has created strong and likable good guys and some nasty bad guys. This is a fun series with mti generational characters. Harper and Hattie have a wonderful family relationship and use their gifts for good.
I cannot say enough about this series. I am only finishing book 2 and I am in love. Miss Jones has a seemless way of incorporating these characters to ones you are cheering on. Look forward to what the rest of the series offers.
This book adds more gifted people to the mix and displays Harper’s growing powers. The mystery is multifaceted and convoluted enough to need all their powers to solve it
I enjoyed this book better than the first in the series! It was such a good cozy mystery with great characters from book 1 as well as interesting new characters.
This is the second book by Stacy Jones that I've read and she has the knack for creating a paranormal mystery with romance thrown in.Hope there's a follow up book
