The Mermaids' Lullaby

Rate this book
Glitter sparkles on every page of this genuine treasure by Kate Spohn, whose work has been described as "truly extraordinary" by the Horn Book Review and "luminous" by Kirkus Reviews . This is a tender sea song, sung to sleepy mermaid babies by mer-mommies and mer-daddies. From the tapping of the sea urchins and the sound of bubbly voices to flashing fish and the circle of mermaid dancers, children will be lulled by words as soothing as lapping waves and captivated by art that is joyful and inviting.

Review: This folk tale is based on mermaids and their babies, who are being put to sleep by the sounds of the ocean. The illustrations are pretty eye-catching, and I'm sure all the glitter would catch the attention of a younger girl quite easily. The story alone...is kind of boring. Overall, it would be a decent bedtime story.

Content Areas:
For this story, you could use it for a variety of areas. But I would most likely use it when teaching students the alphabet. The book often uses phrases that have the same letters as the object they're talking about(ex. "The flashing of the fish." I think going through the text and pointing out those connections might help them understand pronunciation and identifying letters.

Comprehension:
Q: If you had the chance to meet any character from the text, who would you pick? Explain why.
A: I would pick the whale, they are such massive creatures but are very amazing. Especially with the way they communicate to each other.
Q: What was something you saw/heard that the mermaids do differently than humans when they're getting ready for bed?
A: I noticed that all the babies sleep in a chained hammock made of seaweed.

Wonders:
1. Why do they need to sweep under water?
2. How do they get all the babies to sleep at the same time?

A sweet and special feeling story to read with the little person that loves the sea, mermaids and sparkles. A gentle and soothing read, perfect for putting your little one to sleep as the mama mermaids get rocked to sleep by the ocean waves. Thoroughly enjoyed the images, story and decorative use of sparkles.

Beautiful illustrations but the text is difficult to sing if it is really a lullaby.
