All D.A. Gil Montgomery wants is a robbery conviction, but what he gets is a mistrial, thanks to the new teacher in town, Patience Andrews. Gil meets his match in the headstrong Patience, who challenges Gil's expertise. Yet as they work together to catch a criminal, the willowy innocent begins to charm the stubborn prosecutor. Gil had made the wrong choice once—with his son's mother. Can he trust his judgment now? Is Patience merely the bane of his existence…or the woman meant to be his wife?
Grace, Patience and Constance—bound together by their love for each other and their faith in God, these women are…SISTERS OF THE HEART.
Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances! This love of books led to a desire to write. Lyn won prizes in high school and college for her poetry and, not surprisingly, Lyn became a history and English teacher. When she became a mother, she gave up teaching, and while raising a son and a daughter, she began working on her first novel. Then she wrote her second and third. Long years of rejection followed — as it does for most writers. Finally in 1997, Lyn got "the call." Her first book, Never Alone, was chosen to appear in the first year of the new Love Inspired line. Lyn has written many articles on writing and the emerging Christian Booksellers Assoc. (CBA) fiction market. In 2006, Lyn's book, Chloe, is a finalist for the RWA's RITA, the highest award in the romance genre in the inspirational category. Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.
LOVED Patience and Gil!!!! LOVED little Darby!!! His relationship with his teacher was ADORABLE!!!....COULDN'T STAND the Captian!!! Enjoyed the storyline and MOST of the characters!!!....Good book!!! Enjoyed Patience's story more than her cousin Gracie's....Now on to Constance's story!!! ;-)
This book has some hard-hitting topics. Patience's mother is an alcoholic who foists herself on her daughter repeatedly, especially when on parole. Patience is the only 'not-guilty' in a hung jury, and is ostracized by the entire town for standing by her convictions and keeping an innocent man from being charged for assault/battery and theft. She's in a new job, and worried that this will mean the end of her first teaching position. More, she's championed a 'troublemaker' child and is trying to make a difference in his life.
Gil is the D.A. who is attracted to her, but staunchly set in his views on the case, despite a lack of circumstantial evidence. His father is a hard-nosed man who disapproves of his every move, and says hurtful things to both him and his son. Gil's first wife is irresponsible and now has taken up with a biker with a criminal record. Worse, Patience is nosing in asking questions about the case all over town, driving him crazy. When 'copycat' robberies/assaults occur, he finds himself questioning his preconceived ideas and trying to find the perpetrator alongside of the most intriguing woman he'd ever met.
The ONLY complaint I have with this is that Cote seems to equate being a man/woman of God with being a church-goer. I'm fairly certain Abraham, Moses, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Isaiah, Daniel, John on Patmos, Paul traveling Macedonia... ALL of them would not agree. Neither do I.
LOTS of hard-hitting topics, but every one of them is handled with SO MUCH GRACE and such apt verses, written so painstakingly and with beautiful characterization... this book took my breath away. DEFINITELY a keeper, and I'll be recommending it with high praise.
Thank you, Lyn, for being one of the reasons I've collected 'Love, Inspired' books. People like you weave stories meant to be shared and loved. I'll treasure this one.
A good quick read about forgiveness and letting go. A daughter forgiving a mother who could not overcome her demons. A son who married a woman he had nothing in common with because his overbearing father disapproved, then throw in a troubled little boy and attempted murder.
