What separates pastors who finish well from those who don’t?
When trusted pastors fall into sin and destroy a ministry, the entire body of believers gets hurt. After helping two large churches through the aftermath of such an event, Daniel Henderson discovered that pastoral failings are not primarily rooted in overdeveloped passions for self and sin but rather in underfed visions of eternity and a lack of zeal for God’s glory.
In Glorious Finish, Daniel Henderson teaches you:
Why focusing on God’s glory is the key to a fruitful ministry How leaders can build habits that keep them captivated by God and His glory How to stay glory-oriented in the grind, challenges, and spiritual attacks of ministry Forget the latest techniques and the strategies—spend some time recentering on what you know is most important—His glory.
I heard about this book on a podcast that I cannot retrieve at the moment. Every person who is involved in ministry ought to have to read this book! The longer I go along and see the slips/slides of people, the more this matter of self-examination and strong commitment to personal/private prayer becomes evident to me.
Henderson tells some horrifying anecdotal tales in this book. He will make you think about your motives but most of all, he insists on keeping the finish line in view so that it helps you to set your priorities correctly.
If we think that what we do make God glorious, we blaspheme. If we aim in what we do to display God's glory, we worship. We must join the Bible in saying that the goal is to glorify him by seeing and savoring and showing Him as the greatest beauty and treasure in the universe.
Pastoral failings can damage the church, however, I am in the believe that pastoral failings can be an opportunity for God's glory when a life is redeemed. Is this book about despair or hope? I think it is both. Despair if we give up on God's glory and we don't understand the implications however, when we do understand the significance of God's glory for our good, we have hope for eternity. Circumstances become irrelevant and the gospel becomes life to a cursed world.
The book comes 4 parts Reasons Rhythms Results Rewards
This resource is for all Christians as we are affected by the sin of others. It is sin that brings us to the cross and ultimately to glory. God's glory reflects his worth. It is by this, we have reasons for hope, equipped with rhythms, given results, and rest in rewards. A reminder of the hope of God's glory to finish well.
A Special Thank you to Moody Publishers and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Another encouraging read for those of us tempted often to take our eyes off of what eternally matters. As a pastor I am daily tempted to look to things that are temporal as my measure of success and faithfulness and I am thankful for the reminder that true faithfulness is measured by how our lives point to the one who has already been faithful for us. This framework for a glorious finish will be something I keep coming back to over and over to battle these temptations.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of Glorious Finish.
There are valuable gems in this book. They have to be mined, which takes work and effort. However, the effort is rewarding when new insights of precepts are plumbed.
While Christians may have bible doctrine down pat, there is a need for a fresh approach in teaching bible truths; Glorious Finish provides such. It is a delight to read the metaphorically rich examples. It is a delight to plumb the wisdom of resources provided- references by many noted authors, apologists, and biblical scholars. It is a delight to glean new perspectives to “old” teachings.
When I began reading, I quickly realized this book was written for pastors. I am a lay person with no pastoral care leadership role in a church. While portions of the book are geared primarily for pastors, I found the writing and concepts enthralling and pertinent for any believer who strives to grow in faith and Christian disciplines. I think this is important to note because the audience could be much broader. Christians in general, not just pastors in particular, can profit from the treasures found in Glorious Finish! I found it so deep and compelling, I am rereading it already! Yes, a gem indeed!
Many books you can read, file away, and move on.Other books you must read, contemplate, and absorb. This book, I found, needed to be read in bites, contemplated with honesty, and carried into my own self to be confronted and shaped, all before I could read further and repeat the process. You can read it quickly, but I wouldn't suggest it. The topic is too weighty to miss. Heaven's glory is at stake. Glorious Finish took me on a journey of self reflection. Like all worthy journeys it was filled with danger and clear about it's reward. I could breeze through the book, or I could gain insights to help me obtain a glorious finish to my ministry. I personally couldn't do both. Daniel Henderson sounds like a wise friend and mentor who wants to shape you from his experience. You would be wise to listen.
