San Francisco #4

What Happened After...

Rate this book

This is the San Francisco Series Finale: a collection of 3 short stories about each featured couple in the series. The events take place after each story's respective Epilogue.

Following up on the success of "What Happened After: the Chicago Series," here’s a glimpse into the lives of the ladies of the San Francisco Series. Find out what’s been going on with Emma & Keira, Macon & Joanna, and Hillary & Amara after their stories ended.

Epilogues are nice, but they’re a snapshot in time. Maybe it’s a year after the end of the book or even just six months. Maybe there’s a proposal or a wedding. Maybe a character announces she’s pregnant. Maybe a character just got their dream job. This group of short stories will give you a glimpse into the future of the characters.

If you plan to read these, please read all the books in the series first. Because the lives of the characters in the San Francisco Series are so closely woven together, you won’t want to read the additional content for Macon & Joanna, for example, until you’ve read all three of the books in the San Francisco Series.

Recommended order of reading the books in the series:

Checking the Right Box (in San Francisco Series) Keep Tahoe Blue (in Tahoe Series) Macon's Heart (in San Francisco Series) This Above All (in San Francisco Series) What Happened After... (in San Francisco Series)

I love Nicole Pyland's writing so obviously I've read all her books and won't miss any future ones. So when her latest, the post-epilogue finale her San Francisco series, "What Happened After...(San Franciso Series, #4)," came out, I quickly devoured it. I must say, I like and enjoyed this series finale much more than the Chicago series. I was a little tentative at first because of the Chicago post-epilogue series finale. But then...I literally whooped in delight when I discovered that all 3 post-epilogue updates of the 3 pairings from the SF series (Books 1-3 - Keira/Emma, Joanna/Macon & Hillary/Amara) had....NO BABIES!!!!!! Thank bloody Christ!! I mean, I was truly baby-ed out from the post-epilogue "What Happened After...(Chicago Series, #4)", if you must know. This one though, I was chuffed to bits finding out each couple's married life and their future's trajectory did not include tiny humans at all!! Phew! What a fabulous and delish surprise for me! Sigh of relief! Cheers, Ms. Pyland!
(Why? Because not every lesbian couple's future has to be about babies, you know what I mean?)
Anyway, this time Pyland focussed on each couple's outlook about their married life including their respective careers. Hillary and Amara's (from Book 3, me favourite installment of the series) also included some truth and reconciliation when it came to Amara's dad and her mum's past, which I really appreciated.

Anyway, this was, to me, a proper, realistic look at how married couples who've been together for quite a while, with obviously inevitable changes in circumstances and opportunities throughout their journeys, cope including finding ways to enrich their lives together further down the line. Using these 3 couples to chronicle different situations and lifestyle choices that married couples encounter IRL was just brilliant!

I'd defo recommend this one but first, Books 1 -3 must be read chronologically. Otherwise, your reading experience won't be as smooth or make sense, you know.

Decent, but nothing groundbreaking. Which isn't surprising. It's effectively a collection of epilogues. And I wasn't too fond of some of the books in this series, so an epilogue for said stories wasn't something I wanted nor needed.

Big and sad changes for the San Francisco crew. I liked it but it was missing something so this was okay.

A fitting end.

I loved the parts for macon & Joanna, as wel as for Hillary and Amara. I almost disliked keira and Emma's part as much as their book. Granted it was definitely better, but I still found myself asking when it was going to be over and checking how many pages I had left. Not sure why? I thought Emma and Keira were a cute couple. And their struggles were realistic, but something about their book, and their what happened after, just rubbed me the wrong way. The other two couples made it hard to put the series down. Looking forward to the next series 😊

Warning! I can't recommend any of the "What Happened After" short stories if you were satisfied with the endings of the excellent Nicole Pyland's Chicago, Tahoe and San Francisco series.

NOT because the writing or stories are poor, but they are a bit of a downer after the HEA endings of the original series. Basically life happens, as we all know it will, but for me it took away some of the fantasy of an excellent romance series.

As I read the original series out of order this was the first "What Happened After" I read. It left me sad but I won't say why as I don't want to put actual spoilers in this review.

I also read the Tahoe WHA but decided I'd rather leave the Chicago WHA alone as I was happy where everyone ended up.

Again, these short stories are not badly written and I feel a little guilty at leaving a three star review, I've only done it to warn potential readers. Nicole Pyland remains an excellent author and I look forward to more of her work.

This just made me sad

I usually love the what happened after finale but this just made me sad. Chicago series at least has everyone as friends this just seemed like they all gave up on each other. I love that they all seem happy but definitely sad the group fell apart.

love the ending

I love the way you end these stories. Especially you (the reader) get so invested in all of the characters through the entire series. It makes my anxiety feel so much better.

Fantastic wrap up to a fantastic series

This set of short stories, that are in chronological order, are all follow up stories to The San Francisco Series, so it is best to have read those three books, and the first volume of The Tahoe Series as well, prior to reading this book. The stories do a wonderful job of giving closure to the series.

Love to catch up with these characters

I really enjoy these "What happened after" books. Now we go back to the Tahoe series! I love that all of these series exist within the same world tied together by friendships.

Great!

I loved What Happened After. A wonderful wrap up of the characters from the San Francisco series. Don’t read this one until you’ve read the others in this series. Basically the story of good friends, getting on with their lives.

I liked that this wrapped up the series, but I felt like it left me still wondering and a little sad. I did enjoy the series and thought it was some of this author's best writing, story-wise, so for.

It would have been a 5 stars if... Well... It's the finale. There's always some disappointment. Despite all of that, I still appreciate it. <3
