Everyone knows that buying a house is a huge endeavor. Well, apparently everyone but Jessie’s friend, Evan. When he buys a foreclosure, seemingly out of the blue, Jessie is concerned that the house looks like it might blow over with the first big wind. Add to that the giant rats, a closet full of creepy dolls and a former owner who refuses to leave, and it seems like things couldn’t get much worse. Good thing it’s not really Jessie’s problem. Not her problem, that is, until she’s the one that finds the prior owner dead under the house. While the victim might have been a nosy old eccentric, her friends from the senior center are nevertheless determined to track down the killer. Somebody’s got to do it, and it’s certainly more interesting than another game of Bingo. Jessie is slightly more concerned about Evan, who appears to be cracking under the combined pressure of an impending layoff and his disastrous new house. He seems to think the spirit of the victim is haunting him. Too afraid to stay in his new house, he and his dog have taken up residence on Jessie’s couch. Can Jessie join forces with the seniors and track down this dangerous killer? Or is this well-meaning group poking their way to a collision course with death?

Sandy St. John is a reformed number cruncher, who now spends her time dreaming up terrible people to knock off. When she’s not either plotting or working on house projects, you can probably find her walking the dog or hanging out at a coffee house. Being a classic extroverted / introvert, she’d be happy to hang out with you over a cup of coffee (especially if you have your dog with you). But if you come to the house and ring the bell, she’ll probably hide behind the couch until you go away. Please don’t take it personally—it’s not you. Well, mostly…

Another great Barker Street Bones Mystery. I really wasn't expecting to be able to find a lot of humor in anything I'm reading lately what with Covid-19, the economy tanking, unemployment rising faster than a flash flood, and the world totally stressed out, but I did find a great read! I LAUGHED OUT LOUD so many times. Just not expecting to find anything funny right now. I loved this book! Entertaining, funny, kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend this book! I can't wait until the next one shows up.

I received this book as part of Goodreads Giveaways.

I didn't read the first one in the series but I don't think that affected my ability to understand what was happening in this book. The only thing I kept wondering about is if the first book mentioned why Jessie puts up with her neighbor Larry. I couldn't understand why she would put up with his crap. But then Jessie seems to put up with a lot of crap from a lot of different people. The mystery part was okay; I wasn't really surprised by the ending. Getting there had some fun moments as a parade of quirky characters was assembled. It was a fun, fairly quick read but I don't know that I am inclined to read the first one or any others in the series.

Quick read, but interesting. Good plot, funny story. The ending left a little to be desired but not bad. I think I would have liked it more if it made sense. The finale was way out of left field and no clues really leading up to the whodunit but overall good book.
