Impervious
International best-selling author Pierre Lemaitre pens this novella following the cases of Commander Camille Verhœven of the Brigade Criminelle in Paris. Camille is four foot eleven inches, but his small stature greatly contrasts his renowned experience and reputation as one of the greatest French detectives.
At 5 pm on the run Joseph-Merlin in Paris, a timed bomb explodes and rocks the area leaving behind twenty-eight injured and shockingly no fatalities. Still, it could have been much worse if not placed underground in the building with scaffolding covering the outside. While the police start the investigation, Jean (John) Garnier walks into a police station, claims responsibility for planting the bomb and gives them details that prove he is the bomber.
The authorities are not quite sure how to handle Jean and uncover the location of the other six bombs. Do they play good cop, bad copy or play tag between the two? The interest in the case goes to the very top, and anti-terrorist forces are brought into forcibly discover the information they need. It becomes clear that while the authorities read Jean as someone bemused, laughable (but for the seriousness of the bombing), and naïve, they may have jumped to premature judgement. With beatings to reveal the location of the other six bombs, Jean remains silent and behaves as though this is what he was expecting. Eventually, control comes back to Camile Verhœven, and we see another shift in approach. The dialogue is fully engaging, and the writing around this interplay is extremely clever to draw the shifting power between Jean and the authorities. The count down to the remaining bombings is dramatic, and the uncertainty on how to handle the situation adds a wonderful sense of peril for everyone.
The positive feelings of; I wish this had been longer, and I can’t believe so much was covered in a novella, reflects on the wonderful story, which can surely be said of this book. To add to Jean's compelling motivation, his mother Rosy is on remand for murdering his girlfriend. The secrets that mother and son hold tightly are bemusing, insane and potent.

Novelilla corta del maestro Lemaitre, que en principio fue un proyecto digital (Les grands Moyens) adaptado a los viajeros del metro parisino. De ahí sus brevísimos sub capítulos horarios.
Sin tener parangón alguno con sus dos grandes obras anteriores (“Irene” y “Alex”), más que nada, por su brevedad. Ello no impide que nos encontremos con una obrilla muy entretenida, en la que, sin embargo, quién no conozca al detective Verhoeven poco en claro sacará con esta entrega, salvo su estatura. Alguien distribuye una serie de artefactos explosivos por la ciudad de París, para que estallen en días consecutivos. El primero ya ha estallado, afortunadamente, sin víctimas. Acto seguido el terrorista se entrega y pide hablar con nuestro comandante, al que conoce de verlo en los medios de comunicación. Verhoeven tiene otros planes. Pasar la noche con su compañera. No podrá ser.
Simplona cual mata de habas, es, sin embargo, otra válida aportación. No diré que imprescindible, pero sí muy recomendable. Trama sencilla, directa y muy resultona. Y con un gran final.

Ahhh! Cómo extrañaba al comandante Camille Verhœven que no encontré en Alex.
Una novela corta, con capítulos igual de cortos, que transcurre en apenas tres días. Pero a pesar de lo anterior, después de terminarla y darle vuelta a las situaciones y la caracterización de los personajes, te das cuenta que no le falta absolutamente nada. Lemaitre no se cansa de sorprenderme y, además, prepara el camino para el cierre de esta espectacular serie.
Muy recomendable y aunque se puede leer de forma independiente, no va a dejar el mismo gusto si antes no se ha leído Irène y Alex.

Lemaitre (1956-) escribe Rosy & John (2013) como un serial por entregas de pequeña extensión. El resultado es un novela corta (o un cuento largo) donde este magnífico autor desarrolla el tema de los asesinatos masivos con una clásica estructura lineal (inicio, desarrollo y desenlace) agilizándolo con un par de interesantes giros.
Debido a la corta extensión, Rosy & John no alcanza la complejidad e intensidad, tanto en el argumento como en los personajes, que poseen sus dos entregas anteriores ( Irene y Alex ). En cualquier caso, el fantástico estilo de Pierre Lemaitre consigue mantener la tensión y la intriga suficiente para disfrutar de la historia sin hacer comparaciones innecesarias.
Supongo que también por el mismo motivo Camille no nos sorprende demasiado, su papel es tan solo inteligente e ingenioso, como cualquier detective de cualquier otra saga de novela negra (no hay espacio suficiente para excentricidades ni tramas secundarias). Tampoco encontramos la brutalidad característica en este autor o al menos se queda tan solo en posibilidad, no la hace explícita.
De todos modos, se trata de un relato entretenido que merece la pena leer para completar el universo Verhoeven después de la espléndida novela, Alex, y antes de encararse con la cuarta entrega de la saga Camille .

Pierre Lemaitre is the master of the shocking unexpected. This novella also features Commander Camille Verhoeven of the Brigade Criminelle in Paris but is not gruesome like his previous books Irene and Alex. Verhoeven is a fantastic character. His short stature belies his intellect and gritty determination.
In this story Jean Garnier (John) has planted a series of seven unexploded WWI mortar 140mm mortar shells around the country. The first one detonates on a busy Paris street but luckily no one is killed. He doesn’t hide and is quickly arrested. However he doesn’t talk, he just wants to be flown to Australia with his mother Rose Garnier (Rosy) with €4 million. The only problem is - his mother is on remand in prison for killing his recent girlfriend. When the police agree to his demands he will tell them the locations of the other six bombs, set to go off one per day.
Nothing is as it seems in this dark drama. The relationship between the son and his mother is a strange one indeed. Verhoeven suspects there is more at stake than meets the eye, but what? And how can he prove it? This was a delicious vignette that took just over an hour to read. While anyone could enjoy this story, I think if you have read any of the previous books you will definitely appreciate this book. 4⭐ Corta e intensa.
Quizá demasiado corta para mi gusto y porque me estaba gustando lo suficiente para que hubiese durado al menos cien páginas más.
Tercera entrega de la serie de Camille Verhoeven, un pasito por detrás de Iréne y Alex, no porque sea de menor calidad sino porque sus cientosetenta páginas no da para desarrollar una historia tan compleja.
No quiero comentar mucho del argumento por riesgo a comentar de más. Solo decir que Pierre Lemaitre sigue en su línea, si te gusta su estilo y has disfrutado de los dos anteriores de la serie, este te gustará. Trama muy iteresante, personajes potentes y que nada es lo que parece ser.
Como curiosidad, en las notas del autor, este comenta que fue un encargo para una novelita para los smartphone, de capítulos cortos que no durasen más que los trayectos de transbordo en metro (qué poco me gustan estas cosas) y él decidió para este encargo llamar al bueno de Camille.

No ha estado mal aunque me ha sabido a poco. Es casi un relato, con un buen ritmo pero como que me ha faltado algo, como la investigación, encontrar al culpable, cosas que aquí no se dan ya que .
Bueno esta es la sinopsis: Jean Garnier es un joven solitario que lo ha perdido todo: su trabajo, tras la muerte misteriosa de su jefe; su novia, en un extraño accidente, y Rosie, su madre y principal apoyo, que ha sido encarcelada. Para dar rienda suelta a su dolor, planea hacer explotar siete obuses, uno por día, en distintos puntos de la geografía francesa.
Después del primer estallido se entrega a la policía. Su única condición para evitar la catástrofe es la liberación de su madre. El comisario Verhœven se encuentra ante un gran dilema: ¿es Jean un lunático con delirios de grandeza o una verdadera amenaza para todo el país?

An intriguing plot, which makes you curious, an interesting continuation and a surreal final. It depends on your mood, if you go further digging in the relationship between mother and son, but the style and narrative technique are here anyway.
An author to be carefully followed. If he had been born an American, he would have sold much more than, let's say, Hemingway and Truman Capote taken together...

Estamos ante una entretenida novela del comandante Camille Verhoeven.
La misma formó parte de un proyecto digital en donde los episodios no debían sobrepasar las tres páginas de una pantalla, adaptándose al tiempo calculado que un parisino pasa entre los transbordos del metro.
Es similar a los viejos folletines por entregas que hizo por ejemplo Dumas. Ahora pasó a libro y tenemos entre manos esta pequeña obra que se lee rápida.

No le doy las 5 estrellas por que es muy corto, y el caso estaba para dar mucho que leer. Definitivamente Lemaitre desborda talento, cada vez me voy volviendo más aficionado a sus letras.

A slim yet enjoyable mystery with Camille Verhoeven, one of my favorite investigators in fiction, leading the case. Not quite a "who dunnit", more like a "wtf" ?!

Un roman scurtissim (ba chiar îl suspectez că ar fi nuvelă, nu roman) din seria dedicată comisarului-șef Camille Verhoeven, pe care Pierre Lemaitre l-a publicat inițial în foileton, cu un atentator care-a pus șapte bombe prin tot Parisul și cere ca, în schimbul divulgării locurilor în care-au fost plasate acestea, să-i fie eliberată mama din pușcărie. Întunecată și aprigă pe alocuri, reprezintă prima mea întâlnire cu mereu supăratul pe viață Verhoeven. Și, ce să vezi, aș mai vrea să citesc despre cazurile sale, pentru că pare încă un personaj aproape memorabil. Recenzia, în curând, pe Bookblog.

One of my all-time favourite crime writers. This is a novella that slips in before the third novel in the Camille Vanhoeven series. As a novella, it has all the hallmarks of Lemaitre's masterful ability to grip the reader with an unfolding horror and sense of urgency, however its short, as a novella is, and so just as the story line begins to truly grip, it's over. I feel that this could have been a book and feels underdeveloped as a result. Still, gripping and satisfying for an hour's reading.

3,5 como mínimo. No le pongo un cuatro porque pese a ser muy entretenido y emocionante y seguir todas las constantes del autor, es muy corto y apenas ahonda en la psicología de los personajes, que es el punto fuerte de Lemaitre.
Al fin y al cabo, éste es un relato que Pierre Lemaitre escribió para ser leído en smartphones, algo así como un encargo que él aceptó porque le gustan los folletines del siglo XIX y su forma de crear tensión dramática, y se nota. Se sitúa cronológicamente entre la novela "Alex" y "Camille" (que aún no se ha publicado en España), que son parte de su trilogía del inspector Verhoeven. Ése es un punto negativo, porque es obvio que Anagrama ha aprovechado la creciente popularidad del autor para editar esta historia que entra en 158 páginas (y eso poniendo unos márgenes de elefante) y por la que te cobran la friolera de casi 17 euros. Que yo no digo que la novela no esté bien, a mí me ha gustado mucho, pero también me parece que esto es abusar.
Si tenéis mono de una novela de Lemaitre y esperáis ansiosos la última entrega del inspector Verhoeven, esto puede suavizaros la espera. Es una obra, creo, algo menor, pero yo al menos me lo he pasado pipa. De hecho, la analogía con una bolsa de pipas es apropiada: una vez empecéis, no podréis dejar de leer hasta acabarla.

Es una obra, creo, algo menor, pero yo al menos me lo he pasado pipa. De hecho, la analogía con una bolsa de pipas es apropiada: una vez empecéis, no podréis dejar de leer hasta acabarla.

Historia que transcurre en unos pocos días, sin la crueldad de los volúmenes previos, y que sin embargo mantiene la expectación hasta el desenlace final. Para mi gusto sorprendente.

La tercera parte de esta serie, me ha gustado algo menos que los anteriores (pero es que fueron demasiado!). Aún así la he disfrutado mucho. En este libro de poco más de 100 páginas, se nos cuenta un caso rápido, que Verhoeven tendrá que resolver contrarreloj. Y nunca mejor dicho...
Quizá el hecho que sea tan cortito, y que el final me ha gustado, pero no me ha sorprendido tanto como los anteriores, ha hecho que no me de más puntuación... pero de verdad, que merece mucho la pena.
Deseando leer el cuarto, y saber como termina esta serie.

No es un libro extenso y creo que su desarrollo es demasiado largo, mientras que su desenlace se hace corto y poco sorprendente. Hasta ahora, es el más flojo de la tetralogía Verhoeven.

As disturbed as I have been in my years at the state of the national rugby and cricket side at least there’s some hope, I’m not sure I can say the same for English crime fiction, I worry for it, and that concern is exaggerated when I read the likes of this; the French do it so well, with tight plots and quick wit that don’t overspill their optimal length.
Once again, and as expected, there’s lots of influence from the great French noir writers here, Lemaitre even calls his evil protagonist Garnier. Lemaitre’s thrillers revolve around the domestic. They present crime that invades the domestic sphere, as criminals target the detective’s personal life or, alternatively as with this, criminal behaviours that originate from a traumatic family past.
This is the third (or fourth if in translation) of the Verhoeven series, that follows the equally strong Irene , Alex and Camille . It’s got a good twist as well.

Tercera de la saga del inspector Camille, mas corta de lo habitual pero igual de intensa. Está claro que se puede confiar a ciegas en cualquier cosa que lleve el sello de este hombre porque nunca defrauda.

Vuelve el Camille que más me gusta, el buscador de la verdad, el borde, el profesional que ha dejado atrás la pena.
Una novela corta,fuerte y decidída a contar lo que tiene que contar. Sin rodeos, directa. No le sobra nada, ni le falta tampoco. Me ha sorprendido mucho lo concentrado que está todo en apenas 170 páginas, pero merece la pena.
Esta novela es la tercera entrega de la saga Verhoeven. Creo que es necesario leer los anteriores “Irene” y “Alex” para estar en el contexto y entender mejor al comandante aunque en esta historia son personajes diferentes y no hace mención al pasado. Se puede llegar a leer como autoconclusivo.
Rosy y John sorprenden, sobre todo él, una personalidad compleja y alejada de estereotipos. ¿Podría haber sido una novela más larga? Sí, pero quizá eso le hubiera restado intensidad.
Ya solo me queda ir directa a por “Camille”, el libro final de la saga.

¡Qué cortito!. Esto son dimensiones de relato, casi. Incluso he leído relatos más largos.
Pues vamos a ver... por una parte, nada que reprocharle, en el sentido de que es entretenido y te mantiene interesada plenamente de principio a fin, sin explicaciones, circunloquios, ni ese tramo inicial en el que te ponen en antecedentes pero que suele ser menos interesante. Aquí entras en materia directamente, es todo tema. En ese sentido, cortito, pero bien aprovechado una historia que te tiene todo el rato.
Y poco más🤷♀️ Está bien, te interesa, pero tampoco se queda dando vueltas en tu cabeza, como el anterior. GL (Negro)

Un roman foarte scurt, dar surprinzător de alert și captivant. Aș fi vrut și emoție, dar s-a revanșat prin cantitatea de suspans.

En realidad es un 3,5. Una historia muy buena, con un ritmo frenético, pero tan corta que apenas se ha detenido en los personajes, sin ahondar en ellos.
