Set in Cleopatra’s Egypt, Ahead of Her Time introduces more than 500 SAT and ACT words in context, allowing you to build a stronger vocabulary as you read.
With definitions at the bottom of each page and a glossary at the back of the book, even words like defenestrate or crepuscular are understood at once, without interrupting the flow of the story.
The research is the brain learns language most effectively through context. Ahead of Her Time is built on that principle, presenting high-level vocabulary in a way that is immediately understood and naturally reinforced as the narrative unfolds.
At the center of the novel is Noor Cunningham, the daughter of two maritime archaeologists who vanished while investigating the Library of Alexandria.
When a clue suggests they may still be alive, Noor follows it to Egypt and into a race to save the ancient world’s greatest repository of knowledge.
What follows is a fast-paced adventure through Cleopatra’s Egypt, where loyalties shift quickly and the stakes could not be higher.
The story carries you forward. The vocabulary comes naturally.
If you are preparing for the SAT or ACT, or simply want a stronger command of the English language, Ahead of Her Time offers a more effective, and entertaining, approach than rote memorization.
Erica Abbett is a teacher-turned-author determined to reignite a passion for the classics.
Her SAT vocabulary novels are as beloved by students as they are by parents (not an easy feat when it comes to SAT prep!). But then again, most SAT prep doesn't feature a delightful mixture of action, adventure, and ancient Egypt. "Ahead of Her Time: An SAT Vocabulary Novel" was published in 2019, followed by "Siena Saint James Is Not a Spy" in 2023.
Abbett's most recent project has been annotating classic novels, wherein she adds definitions and explanations to the bottom of each page. You can read her fully-annotated editions of nearly a dozen novels, from The Iliad to Jane Eyre and The Great Gatsby. Though lesser-known, her favorite is "A Room With a View."

This was such a fun book packed with wit, action, romance, history and some SAT-prep to boot! One of my students is related to the author and loaned me her copy to read- I'll have to get this on my classroom library shelves soon.
This is a super fun read that includes a lot of vocabulary used in the ACT/SAT. I read it because I thought it sounded interesting and it was! There’s romance, mystery, and friendships all while learning or re-learning about Egyptian history. My only drawback was that I became, do not shame me, bored at times and skimmed to get enthused again.
A fun romp through Cleopatra‘a Egypt. I loved the concept of this book (reading instead of flash cards as a way to learn big words?? YES PLEASE.) and would have killed for something similar when I was in high school. Hope there are more to come. (#TeamMarcus 😉)
