Knock Out!: Die Geschichte von E. Griffith

Rate this book
In seiner neuen Graphic Novel Knock Out! widmet sich Erfolgsautor Reinhard Kleist (Nick Cave.

A sad and haunted dramatization of the life of a Black LGBTQ+ man who wanted to design women's hats but stumbled into a boxing career in the 1950s that would lead him to multiple championships and one of the most infamous days in the sport's history.

Reinhard Kleist's heavy and bold ink work moves the story along well, though I wasn't thrilled with the hallucinatory/supernatural framing device. And after detailing a lifetime of fights and struggles with homophobia and racism, the denouement fizzles as closing events are sketched out in a vague manner that skip past twenty years as if they didn't happen. Still, I'm happy for the chance to learn more about this amazing individual.

Birkaç hafta önce Sırtlan Kitap ziyaretimde Emre Yavuz'a bu önyargımdan bahsettiğimde ısrarla Nakavt'ı okumamı söyledi.

Content notes for sex, nudity, homophobic slurs, boxing and boxing fatality.

Born in Cologne, Reinhard Kleist studied graphic design before moving to Berlin and starting work as a cartoonist. Knock Out is not his first biography comic, Kleist's translated work also includes biographies of Elvis and Johnny Cash, he's also done a number of other sports biographies specifically including books about boxer Harry Haft and Samia Yusuf Omar.

Keywords that came to mind while reading this book? Boxing, civil rights, regrets, hats, and love.

The goodread's description is "The American boxing champion Emile Griffith gained notoriety in 1962 when he brutally defeated the Cuban fighter Benny Paret. Ten days after the fight, Paret, who had directed a homophobic slur at Griffith during the weigh-in, died from his injuries. In Knock Out!, Reinhard Kleist draws a powerful, emotive portrait of a bisexual African American athlete who, facing racism and homophobia in 1960s America, found success in the world of boxing. It’s the story of a fierce and ambitious fighter, and of a knockout blow that ended one life and changed a second forever."

As far as the writing goes I would generally say it was pretty interesting and well done. Obviously, as a generally not sportsy person, I was not aware of Emile Griffith before picking up this book so I am at the mercy of Kleist's depiction. But, again, even as a not sportsy person I found the story really compelling and page turning.

The art certainly helped keep me engrossed. Dramatic black and white with lots of interesting shadow work. No cross hatching in sight, but I'll live. The cover is also unique and intense in a way that made it a must pick-up.

A person at the point of several intersections, sexuality, gender and race were all very important to this book.

Starting with sexuality, there are a couple of things at play here. For one, the narrative in the book did make me feel somewhat uncomfortable about the use of the term bisexual. But doing more research into how Griffith self-identified at different points, even later in life when he became more open about his sexuality to push back against the stereotypes of his profession, he did identify as bisexual. As it doesn't seem like Kleist limited himself to just reciting facts, I feel like he could have probably set up the narrative so it didn't feel like bisexuality is a person who is really just attracted to one gender but finds themselves pressured to be in relationship with another gender. As many gay and lesbian people have been over the last century. Because your sexuality is not just a tally of the genders of people you have ever had sex with. That said, his marriage did in fact not last that long and I did appreciate that at least in the book his wife (Mercedes Donastorg) was not put off by his attraction to men.

I really appreciated the opportunity to dive into a historical queer experience. Not one who got involved in either racial or sexual civil rights, this was a story a step outside of what I've generally read which proved super interesting.

Gender felt like the next most emphasized part of both the story and the follow up essay. The juxtaposition, for example, of being a hat designer and a boxer really pushed against any box you would want to put Griffith in.

There was a lot of racial diversity in the book as well as people coming from many other countries to come together around boxing.

While not outlined as clearly as the previous three intersections, ability and disability were somewhat implicated in the way that Kleist depicts Griffith. With boxing being a sport that takes a high level of physical ability that breaks down both your body and mind.

And while Griffith's material conditions went up and down with his success as a boxer, I felt like class was de-emphasized as a focus.

A very easy and fast paced read, with a higher proportion of action scenes then I generally like, this book has lingered in my mind long after I finished it. Four out of five stars. Would recommend.

Wow! How does Emile Griffith not have an Oscar-winning biopic? Reinhard Kleist's Knock Out! would offer the perfect source material. Griffith was a champion boxer who also happened to be gay, a skilled hat designer, and, oh yeah, .

Knock Out! effectively supplies Griffith's life story without lingering too heavily on dull narration. Kleist uses a smart framing device that ties into the turning point in Griffith's life - the reveal of the narrator is a shock if you don't know Griffith's life story. The main narrative is smart, sad, and humorous when it needs to be. Essentially perfect! The ideal graphic biography. Even the bonus essay about homosexuality in boxing is fascinating. If I had the money (or know-how), I'd buy the film rights to this dang book.

I'd never heard of Emile Griffith (makes sense because I've watched exactly one boxing match in my life).
His story is told skillfully, capturing Griffith's both his winning personality in moments of levity and his older life in obscurity, without bitterness himself but transmitting anger at that unfairness by the author. The visual style was a bit too brash for me; pages felt heavy to me

(although I liked that a lot in the parts about women's haberdashery since it was a weird contrast!)

A graphic novel about the life of Emile Griffith. I didn't know his story before this, so is was a very interesting and also, hm, melancholy read. The art is impressive and has a very unique style, although the all black-and-white and bold strokes can get a bit heavy on the eyes (I sometimes had difficulty making out what happens in the panels).

Dark graphics make the reading extremely heavy but I did like the way the "Champs" inner thoughts are made visible by a clever method. I felt the story could have had more potential and failed to reach all of it. For me it was a shame since stories like these are important.

Kleist presents the true story of champion boxer, Emile Griffith.

One day while at work, in a most oppressive heat, Emile Griffith was stuffing hats in boxes, singing to himself, when several people noticed that his physique was that of a boxer. His boss, Mr. Arnold, took Emile to a local boxing gym and got him set up with a trainer and his first match. Even though Emile didn't want to hurt anyone, he found he was really good at boxing. His strategy? Hit the other guy before he has a chance to hit you. Emile would go on to win many championships and start his own line of Ladies Hats with his former shop. Emile also took several lovers along the way, but, despite their encouragement, he never wanted to get into activism or anything outside of the ring that would draw attention to his personal life. His major rival was Benny "Kid" Paret, who hurled a homophobic slur at Griffith before one of the title matches. Paret later died from his injuries sustained by Griffith during the match.

Kleist narratively has Emile relive his life towards the end of it, and tell the ghost of Paret what happened throughout, leading up to the death of Paret. The constant flashbacks and conversations Griffith has with Paret are easy to follow, and it builds a depth to the story of Griffith's guilt that would otherwise be missing. While Griffith was not a pioneer civil rights fighter, it was an open secret that he was bisexual, and his popularity despite his sexual orientation helped to normalize bisexuality to a small extent.

The heavy, dark illustrations were a little hard to get into at first, but after a few pages, it started to work for me. The only part that was difficult to follow was the fight between Griffith and Paret because they were drawn pretty similarly. It was hard to tell them apart during the action.

This story contains one scene of mutual masterbation (one of the boy's butts is in the shot, but no other bits), and a few suggestive scenes of Emile in bed with naked men (again, no bits are seen). There is also bloodshed and violence. Several characters smoke and drink alcoholic beverages.
