The Selections from Spurgeon’s Library series celebrates the foundation of faith upon which C. H. Spurgeon stood. As a voracious reader, Spurgeon gleaned wisdom from his predecessors and contemporaries that deeply impacted his preaching, writing, and ministry. B&H Academic, in partnership with the Spurgeon Center at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, has culled through more than 6,000 volumes in Spurgeon’s personal library to present a curated collection of essays and sermons on prayer that shaped Spurgeon himself. Addressing such topics as the privilege of prayer, imitating Christ in prayer, and prayer without ceasing, this volume is sure to help readers grow in their faith and experience the true power in prayer.
When you are a bi-vocational pastor with a full time job, a wife and three small kids, time to read gets quite limited, which means getting through a book takes more time, but I’m glad I finished it yesterday!
This book truly is a glimpse into Spurgeon’s library, understanding what authors were available to him. To me it was exciting to discover that.
These authors in this book, I can tell, were men who loved the Lord and loved to pray, and challenged their readers to pray. I personally was challenged to dedicate time to devotion to God, and see it as the most important time of my day. I learned that idleness- not busyness- is the reason why we don’t spend time with God in prayer. Very true. When we are idle, we don’t naturally go to God and focus on him, but try to find other worthless pursuits to pass the time or waste time.
However, I give it a 4 because of my disagreement with these authors on theology. But, I still would recommend it to any believer who would like to be challenged in prayer.
