About the author

Albert Bernard Feldstein was an American writer, editor, and artist, best known for his work at EC Comics and, from 1956 to 1985, as the editor of the satirical magazine Mad. After retiring from Mad, Feldstein concentrated on American paintings of Western wildlife.

Sure, there are some cringy and dated stories in here but there some great ones, too. Anyway, it's impossible for me to give a book which contains Bernard Kriegstein's masterpiece, "Master Race", less than a four-star rating. An exceptional comic artist who was ahead of his time.

Depois de levar por tabela, ou melhor, ser um poster case da censura aos comics motivada pelo pânico moral alimentado pelo falso psicólogo Hayes, a EC Comics teve de mudar de linha editorial. Este usou a violência gráfica dos comics de terror como forma de fomentar uma cruzada moralista que levou a indústria a auto-regular-se com um redutor código de conduta. Nada como apelos a ninguém pensa nas criancinhas, apontado os traumas morais infligidos às mentes juvenis pelo simples olhar para uma vinheta de banda desenhada como causa maior do evidente declínio e queda da moralidade clássica. Pânicos morais, em parte alimentados por indivíduos que procuram protagonismo e lucro financeiro, ou organizações conservadoras que adorariam acabar com essa coisa nefasta que é a liberdade de ideias, são comuns na história dos media, e seguem sempre o mesmo padrão, de supostos efeitos nefastos na moralidade (hoje, na neurologia) dos jovens expostos aos perigos dos romances literários, da ficção científica, rádio, música rock, televisão, videojogos, internet ou telemóveis (é a versão contemporânea deste eterno ciclo de choque contra novas ideias e meios de comunicação, que depressa se normalizam e abrem caminho a novos pânicos mal apareça uma novidade tecnológica ou cultural que atraia a atenção das massas).

Forçada a mudar a sua assumidamente chocante política editorial de comics de terror, bem, aterrorizantes e cheios de nuances morais, a lendária EC Comics diversificou as abordagens. Apostou em comics de ficção científica, que nos legaram iconografias clássicas, especialmente no trabalho de Al Williamson. Histórias de combate, das quais Aces High foi a mais influente, foi outra das vertentes exploradas, que também passou pelo romantismo. E, numa nota mais literária, esta Impact, com histórias que usavam o habitual estilo da EC, com finais volte face que trocam as voltas aos leitores, para tocar em temas mais mainstream. Relações humanas, pobreza, tensões interpessoais dão a inspiração para histórias que não deixariam os leitores indiferentes, daí o título da revista. Esta edição EC Archives compila algumas das melhores histórias, e inclui a fortíssima Master Race, a primeira vez que o tema holocausto foi abordado na banda desenhada.

El claro ejemplo de cómo EC trataba de continuar con sus historias después de la catástrofe que supuso el endurecimiento de la censura que acusaba a los comics de "pervertir las mentes juveniles".

Aunque siguen haciendo honor a su título de historias impactantes, se suavizó enormemente lo grotesco y lo explícito para sustituir los finales generalmente crueles de las anteriores revistas por otros con un aire más irónico o sutil y generalmente dulce y moralista, con cierto toque positivo.

No obstante, encontramos piezas verdaderamente geniales que fueron una referencia en el mundo de las viñetas y que se adentraban en temáticas de una polémica extrema en aquellos tiempos como puede ser el la condena del racismo y la xenofobia.

Una ilustración y guiones, entregados a regatear los límites, que marcó tendencia con piezas ahora mismo imprescindibles y verdaderamente angustiosas, a la par que polémicas, muchas aún de sangrante actualidad.

No voy a ponerme a explicar la implicación y el profundo calado que tuvieron historietas determinadas como "La raza superior", que podrían haber firmado algunos de los más emblemáticos directores y guionistas del suspense.

Excelente trabajo por parte del equipo de Diábolo, en este tomo único, que recupera en castellano estás obras de arte.

Okay, right up front, "Master Race" is a masterpiece and alone worth the price of admission for this book. It's also Feldstein's only script in the book. Krigstein does draw one other story here, and the art in EC books is NEVER a problem - Orlando, Evans, Davis, Crandall, Ingels and Kamen are all here and all up to their usually high standards. But that lack of Feldstein is painful ... Carl Wessler's stilted scripting drags down a well-intentioned "Tough Cop," while "Mother Knows Best" and "Life Sentence" cast emotional abusives as heroes. As a swerve from the often brutal (and excellent) endings of the horror line, they opted for some uplifting endings ("Totally Blind," "Tough Cop") that tread too close to saccharine.

A few stories here have a decent twists ("The Suit," "The Bitter End") and the actually impactful "The Lonely One" would've made a wonderful EC preachie, so there are a few winners outside of "Master Race," but overall, you're buying this book for "Master Race," the always excellent EC stable of artists, and only a small handful of other stories.

The "Impact" series was an anthology of stories with the premise that there's always a twist ending. That's it. There's no similar genre, there's not a whole lot going on, just stories happen and then a twist. Lots of dated stories, lots of cringeworthy stories, lots of predictable stories where you know it's going to be a twist so you know how it's going to end (the opposite of how it starts). The saving grace is, of course, the Master Race, which is basically a single story that makes this book worth picking up on its own.

Another solid entry from EC’s new direction title. Here with the Impact line they lean heavily into the ‘Twist’ factor that they are well known for. An eclectic variety of stories the only thing connecting them is the focus on an impactful twist.

This series very much reminds me of the Twilight Zone, with its twist endings. I do know that EC comics were an influence on that series.
