Can we just say that Chinese New Adult books are actually much cuter than English ones? Read this one a while back and suddenly remembered it cuz the drama adaptation released its trailer today and will be airing sometime in Summer 2019. Excited cuz it has one of my all time favorite actors Li Xian.
This is the story of Tong Nian who is a famous cosplay cover singer as she falls in love(?) at first sight and decided to pursue a pro gamer.
This was a fairly short story. It is definitely new adult because there are some scenes not suitable for young audiences, lol.
I think this would have been better if it was longer? Unlike some of the books I've read with gaming themes on it, I think this one only touched a bit of the gaming world. Then halfway through, it kinda focused on the romance part.
I wanted more because it felt like everything was glossed over. Also, I can't understand Tong Nian that much.
Tong Nian a cosplay singer met Gun who is a top gamer at an internet cafe and fell haed over tails with him. She thought of various ways to attract him but to no avails. That is until by chance they were linked together by a series of misunderstanding.
For me, both characters were not that attractive and not really that convincing. TN who entered uni at the young age of 15 obviously is a kid genius. She is famous celebrity for her singing and have many fans. But once she saw Gun and she goes gaga over him??? Not very convincing. And Gun a top gamer and big player in the industry, not well verse on how to use social media like weibo and wechat???kinda of unbelieveable. Plus Gun doesnt seems to have much gentlement attitude. Ignore her most of the time and in video call he just turn on the video forTN to see him while he does other things....that's pretty rude.
Nevertheless, the characters does have their sweet and endearing moments like the times when TN drank alcohol and the time they met their elders.
Overall , i feel that more sweet moments can be inserted into the novel to make Gun to be a more likeable character.
This is the 3rd story in the series... and it's definitely more romance than the other two.
I enjoyed approximately half of the book when we had more of the story.... until the first time she has beer and it devolves to.... "eating tofu" (except, maybe, in reverse).
Tong Nian is pretty much a Mary Sue - she's gorgeous, has a great body, is an online singer with thousands of fans, and is a genius who graduated university with a double major in bio-engineering and electric+electronic engineering by the time she's about 18/19. (At the beginning of the story, she's 19 and at the beginning of her Master's program.) I think her family is actually also supposedly well-to-do. Her only flaw is that she has a low EQ (and seems rather naive - which is often viewed positively as "innocent").
Gun is the rich, handsome, talented, but terse head of an esports club, who is actually a fairly established character from previous books. He's also 10 years older.
The book has some cute moments and its cringe-y moments. I had fun with the sudden revelations to other people regarding identities and relationships.... Maybe I wish we got to see more of her actually embodying all the talents she's supposed to have; instead, she mostly exists to rattle and entice him.
I do actually really like Gun, and wish him all the happiness... but I also wish that the novel had shown that there was more to her than pining after him.
I would also normally just not think about things and enjoy the fluff for this genre... but I feel as if the novel went a little overboard with (1) giving all her all these qualities that were not really used; and (2) eating tofu.
I was reluctant to read this because I knew Tong Nian was going to make a cringey fool of herself for several chapters. I also figured that Gun/ Han Shangyan was going to get on my nerves blowing her off.
TN was indeed a cringe fest but it was actually amusing. She was both stubborn and completely lacking in cunning. At times I marvelled at her ability to be in his business and also desperately try to get out of it. 😂 I never quite got how she fell so hard at first sight but her pursuit was never boring.
Gun wasn't very nice at first but he adapted to her antics faster than I thought he would. He was kind of a wet blanket at times, so "watching" her completely throw him off was hilarious. It was also a treat to "see" him fall in love with her. It not only showed me why someone would want to love him but it showed why TN was the only person who could make him fall so hard.
They were surprisingly good together. The age gap is 10 years but neither of them had any relationship experience so they were equally matched. I liked that it wasn't opposites attract but different personalities that complemented each other. She was sweet, sensitive and easy going. He was caustic, sensitive and bossy. It worked.
Again, the game play was easy to follow and the side characters were fun. DT and Ai Qing will always be a plus for me. Again, will re-read.
When I saw that it's Mo Bao Fei Bao, I squealed in delight.
This is a story of a genius girl and a former-gamer-turned-founder of a group for eSports. The heroine is still 19 when she first met our Hero named "Gun". And there and then while assisting her BFF in a night cafe, where H used a unit one night, she fell in loved. Perhaps because she was a gifted child that she never really felt those tingling sensations of having a crush, she actually did not know how to react on her feelings. What I liked about her is, she really pursued him. It was she actually who put an effort to meet him, to know about him, to be with him (slightly stalking type but harmless). The Hero (also oblivious with all the female's adoration for him) did not really mind her, maybe because of their 9 - 10 years age difference. But the world is so small, and they kept meeting up by chance :-)
Honestly, for me, this is better than "I really really Miss you..." It's lighter and it touches about eSports of which I am not familiar with hahaha.
I loved it! I like the plot with Yaya and Mi Shaofei in the show, wish it was present here too (by the end of the drama I was kind of more invested in them than Han and Niannian). Han and Tong Nian, though? Definitely better here. I knew they must've added a lot of stuff to the show because the book is quite short, but didn't expect the whole plot of Solo's team to be absent. I know why it was added and I don't blame Nian Nian's mother (looking at it from her point of view she was right to tell Han to leave, if we as viewers weren't in the know we'd say the same) but I'm glad that whole plotline was not present in the book. Luckily that senior dude also barely makes an appearance (I know some people felt bad for him, but his last scene in the show was very creepy and stalkery). Han is very forward in this despite not having experience with girls. I liked it but if someone expects PG-12 plot, it's not. I've started watching the drama last summer and I gotta say I completely forgot the second hand embarrassment I felt from Nian Nian's actions in the first 30-40%.
Really cute story. It gave me a better sense of how Tong Nian and Han Shangyang's relationship evolved.
I preferred the live action drama more. It fleshed out the characters, the turmoil, and storyline better. More emotional and funny moments. I rather liked the K&K boys and their constant bantering are so much fun. I like Dt and grandfather as well. The Team Solo characters were sparse except for mentions of Solo and appledog.
Maybe this kind of love story with a 10 year age or more difference often works out for both parties involved. However, I find it a little too unrealistic especially since most of Little Squid and Gun god obstacles are overcome so quickly. Other than that, their story is very cute and light. Stewed Squid with Honey is a very fun read albeit a little awkward at times.
If it wasn’t because of the drama adaptation, I wouldn’t read this novel. I think I prefered the drama adaptation instead of the novel because the plot was more elaborated and delivering good message especially among the asian community. This novel was more on cheesy realtionship between Tong Niang & Gun.
Love at first sight really isn't my thing so I should've stopped reading after the first sentence. That was only one of the many reasons why I gave this rating though. Also, the tv drama adaptation gave me faces to all the characters which sadly did not improve my reading experience.
