Trigger warning: mentions of rape, murder
Bear with me — a lot of spoilers here but honestly? Such a heartbreak of a book. A happy ending but like this? Thank you, next.
Firstly, why has she forgiven her husband? He did nothing in the form of repentance except shake with fear in front of a judge NOT IN A COURTROOM but in the judge's living room because he knew the judge informally ARE YOU JOKING?
Maybe I'm applying 21st century feminism to a book written in the 1900s but the guy is a RAPIST and a MURDERER. Everybody who's alive - their comfort is taken care of but HELLO? he killed a young recently married man purely because he was his wife' stalker. Do you realise how unhinged that is? The law cares about justice for all rights- what about justice for Mohini's dead husband then?
Thank God he doesn't give Mohini's daughter to her rapist's wife like what the actual FUCK? That thought shouldn't even cross Suman's mind.
The last novel I read equally annoyed me for other reasons but I swallowed my rage trying to contextualise the novel that it was written in the 1900s and it was perhaps not as easy for women to live as divorcees or as single mothers. But this one was next level unacceptable.
Such thoughtful writing, introspective sentences, depiction of women's reality that unfortunately be true today as well but the ending was uninspiring. There was no sense of justice in the book. I forced myself to finish reading the last few chapters once it had become clear that the ending wasn't going to be anything to my liking
