Once upon a time, a little girl was born on a cold winter morning in the heart of Seoul, Korea. She was brought to America by her parents and raised in the Deep South where the words ma'am and y'all became an integrated part of her lexicon. She wrote her first novel at the age of eight and continued writing on and off during her teenage years. In college she studied biology and chemistry and finally combined the two by earning a master's degree in biochemistry. After that she moved to Yankee land where she lived for four years working in a laboratory at Cornell University. Homesickness and snow aversion forced her back South where she lives in the land which spawned Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, John Grisham and B.B. King. After finding her Prince Charming, she gave birth to a wondrous gift named Caylin and they all lived happily ever after.

The second book to the Harvester of Light trilogy will be available for purchase no later than December 2012.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I like the idea of the story but my god the romance.. The romance guys was so awful. I think I like Mason and Jess but the way they go about their relationship makes me want to barf. I could't finish S.J West's Watcher series which is the series that took place in the same world as this one but 15 years in the past. But I couldn't finish it because the romance was so terrible. I kind of thought that this couple couldn't be so cringe worthy but I was sadly very, very wrong.

I understand that Jess had a traumatic childhood. I understand that she would have issues with sex stuff. But she's a freaking tease! No no no I am not talking about when she asks him to stop when he tries to go a little further than kissing. I am totally on board with that. You go girl for telling him no and yay Mason for stopping immediately. But I have issues with her constantly making sexual innuendoes. I mean she does it every other page and she will kiss him and say we can finish it later. Bitch you know you aren't ready for that next step. Stop teasing the poor man. Also Mason is a million and five years old and he was married at some point in his past but he is still acting like a 13 year old with his first crush. It's creepy.

Also the cheesy talk. I am not kidding everything they said to each other was so corny and so unnecessary. I feel like they would stop in the middle of a conversation with, you know, GOD or the flipping devil just to be like I love you, you are the greatest person in the world, I couldn't live with out you. Blah blah blah.

So heres what sucks about my brain.. I kind of really want to know what happens next and I really want to know if Lucifer some how redeems himself. So screw me I'm going to have to read the next book. But I am dreading it.. seriously. I don't want anymore of Mason and Jess.

At the end of book one, Mason walks away from Jess because he believes it will keep her safe from Lucifer's buddies who now want to harm her. So in addition to finding the other hosts of the archangels and their crowns and talismans, Jess must also convince Mason that they are stronger together than apart. Aw.

I'm a little frustrated with this series at the moment. I like the premise. I like the characters (enough), and I thought I liked where the plot was taking me. But now it looks like we are about to go off on a tangent adventure when there is still work to be done and it kind of bugs me. Do we have time for a tangent in a four book series? Also bugging me is the insecurity between Mason and Jess. In book one, we had a lot of back and forth about whether they were going to try to develop a relationship or not. Now I will likely continue the series but I will probably take my time before getting the next book.

3.5 stars. Available to read and Listen via KU. Chose the audio and I feel like the narrator is pretty good. I love that we are really getting into the nitty gritty with the objects and the vessels. I really like the creativity the author had with the items and adding a tiny bit of lore behind them. i feel like this is finally getting somewhere for sure.

This book picks up right where the last book leaves off with Mason pushing Jess away in some misbegotten attempt to protect her. Only once Jess is faced with even more danger does Mason realize not everything is about him... the danger to Jess is there no matter what. Lucifer is also still hanging out.... reluctantly. Jess finally get some reveals about the tear and finds her dad only to realize so much more is going on than she ever thought. Really alot is happening here. Even Jess's adopted family comes under fire here and Jess may have to enter the tear herself with the help of God himself to bring her family home.

Honestly, I don't mind the books, I mean everything is interesting and there is enough knowledge flow that it keeps me involved but this feels like its getting kind of out there and I'm a little lost as to where our end game is heading.. I thought we were going to save the world.. but I'm just not sure what side road we have wondered off into... Maybe book 3 will have some answers?

1.5 Disappointing Stars

Mmm... I don’t really know what to say exactly. It was still enough to pass the time listening to while working, but this is definitely not something I’ll enjoy as a read. I would probably end up skipping so much or DNF-ing it at some point. But if you actually have something to do while listening to the audiobook, it won’t be AS bad. The back and forth between Jess and Mason definitely irked the crap out of me. And I’m not so sure I even like Jess all that much. But I’m deciding to continue with the audiobook of the remaining books since they’re free in Audible and since I’ll be working anyway.

I gave this book a solid 3. I had to deduct major points for this book. I swear if I read the words "Make love" one more time I was gonna go blind from my countless eye rolls!!! The childish sex references were so annoying and awkward. Bursting into tears after every touch was getting annoying too. I understand why but man, I cringed every time she even attempted to make out with him because I just knew it was going to be a disaster. I pray the author got it together in the next book.

After how much I loved the first book, I had to launch straight into this one. This story just gets better and better and Im well and truly hooked. I’m loving the direction the author is taking this story and find myself eager to tear through the chapters to find out more and watch the plot unfold.

Getting to know the characters more has been great, along with the addition to some new faces. The character as well as the plot developments have been brilliant and I’ve loved following Jess and her journey to follow her ‘destiny’. I also love Mason’s character too and find myself somewhat drawn to Lucifer as well. I really can’t wait to find out what will happen in the next book now.

Again this book ended on a very high note and I’m definitely going to continue deeper into this series. I can only sense these books getting better and better, with plenty of excitement to come!

Not bad. It was actually a slower book than the first and more of a romance. The second second and third vessels are found, Mason is back and he and Jess are giving a relationship a go. She’s having to work through the childhood trauma though which can make intimacy difficult. There’s one death that I wasn’t a fan of, why though???

Though not as good as the 1st book, this 2nd entry was decent. The first book was fast paced and had an interesting premise, but I felt this one dragged on a bit too long. However, the last few chapters were really interesting.
I'll take a little break before reading the next book in the series.

I loved being in this world again. it was a bit slower than book 1. I hoped Jess and Mason would progress a bit more in their relationship. they put the slow in slow burn. can't wait for book 3 though as book 2 ended on a double heartbreak and quite a lead up to a final book.
I listened to this on KU audio.

I thought I was reading a series about an adult, someone who makes adult decisions and lives an adult life. However it just seems that I am in fact reading a Young Adult book, a genre of which I am not too big of a fan.

In the previous books I thought Jess could be a bit immature in some of her decisions but we all make mistakes and do stupid things. However this book makes her feel even younger. Everything just reads like a young adult book and I'll give a few examples.

1. Everyone loves Jess or likes her immediately. There is virtually no conflict except from the one dimensional evil henchman who dislikes her for no real valid reason other than as a convenient plot device. He is then vanquished in the beginning of the book and no longer around.
Also how the hell is she the bestest buds with hugs and kisses with the people who work at the Colorado House with Mason. They barely made an appearance in the first book. Not much time has passed. However in this book they’re running to her as if she is a lifelong friend.

2. I'm so tired of Mason leaving her or shutting down his affection for one reason or another only to have her chase after him like a lost puppy. It happened twice in the first book and I was done with the depressing mopping drama before they even got back together in this one. I really wanted her to just tell him to make him chase her for once. It’s just annoying that he's allowed to get away with treating her badly with no repercussions, especially when the main plot device previously was how hard it was for her to open her heart.

3. Jess is a virgin… This part of the plot is another major Young Adult theme that I do not care to read about in my early 30s. Its not so much that she is a virgin but they are approaching sex as if she’s a 16 year old not quite sure if she wants to do it for the first time with her first boyfriend. In the first book her reasons for not so much as having kissed a guy made a kind of sense. She worked so hard, shut off from the world I get it. It happens. However the author is treating this as if she’s a juvenile, so much so she thinks an erection is phone… What?! Then as a complete contradiction she keeps making sexual innuendos when her and the readers know she will not actually follow through on these statements. Its as if the author keeps forgetting the actual character she’s writing.
Then the psychological problems with her childhood molestation only rears up when she getting physical which is unfortunate because it feels like the author is under using some pretty intense trauma that could serve character development well. In the first book the character was a lot more intense, a depth of emotion. In this book it seems that she only has problems in the love department and this trauma only comes out when she gets intimate. There should be nightmares, hesitations to trust people. Something… Anything to make such a thing feel less like a plot device and something that truly effects the character.

All in all this book did not even feel like it was in the same series as the previous one. I felt as if I was reading a young adult novel instead of fiction about a young woman battling for her life, and the safety of those on Earth. I’m going to finish it because although it’s cringe worthy it’s not so bad that I’m clawing my eyes out. I don’t believe I will continue with the series, however as this now seems more like some teenage angst romance drama with a hint of the paranormal instead of an Urban Fantasy drama it purports itself to be.

UPDATE***
I did end up starting the final book because the free preview at the end of book 2 went back to an Urban Fantasy feel. I begin to read it and it started off so very good. The exact kind adventure I love. However i'm about Halfway through and its become the same mushy teenage drama I hate. Ugh.

So, I didn't like this book at all. The author filled the whole thing with Jess wanting to have sex with Mason and being afraid, all the damn time. There was nothing going on in this book except thoughts of sex and Mason's cold showers. And Jess getting her first kiss then spending the rest of the book kissing Mason. Jeez, it reads like a 16 year old heroine and a 30 year old hero. It was reaching the point of stupidity.

Also, I really, really didn't get the purpose in what the author did to John Austin. That was uncalled for.

There was no swearing, but an overabundance of wanting and desire, page after page after page, that led nowhere. I hope the next book isn't anything like this one or I won't be finishing it.

As to the narration: Fabulous! Brittany Pressley gives everyone their own voice but the ones she gives to Faison and JoJo is just phenomenal.

Omg snooze fest!!

I have to start by admitting that the only reason i listened to this audiobook after listening to the first one, is because it was free.

I remember liking the storyline and thinking it could be interesting... don't quite remember how many stars i gave the first one, but this one is barely making it up to two.

This is one of the most AWKWARD romance i have EVER read/listened to. Mason and Jess FINALLY get a first date and it is the most cringe worthy date ever. There is barely any talking, and i sincerely can't tell you why they're in love with one another as there is barely any conversation going on between these two, ever... It's just... awkward!!!

Plus her sister wanting to go through the Tear because she's grieving for her fiancee? Makes absolutely no sense to me...

Free or not, i will NOT be going forward with this series.

idk why i started this when i didn’t even really like the first book. i almost like the premise of this series but i feel like the characters aren’t fleshed out very much and the love story between the fmc and mmc is giving ✨nothing✨.

why are they in love? it feels like they barely know each other. dnf @40% because i was bored to tears. honestly the only reason i finished the first book was because it was free on kindle unlimited/audible so i just listened to it while i did laundry and cleaned and didn’t feel like searching for a new audiobook.

i’m also so sick of reading about adult virgins and these thousands of years old supernaturals that fall in love with them instantly for no reason.

DNF at around 60% when my Audible app crashed and lost my place. I realized I didn't have the will to go on in this story. There were some interesting concepts in the book, so it had potential, but there was no good tension to make the romance compelling. Their relationship has been a done deal from the beginning, it's just a matter of when they'll take each step on the way to marriage & kids. I disliked the talk of courtship and the weird insertion of Southern Christian values into their situation.

If there was a plot spoiler I would read that instead of the books. I will finish the series just to find out how it resolves. Everything seems contrived. “Oh look a new problem and ta-da a new super being or power to solve it”. the double standard of virgin heroine vs hero is annoying. And descriptions of outfits when it isn’t used to develop character or scene is annoying. Listened at 2.5x

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I really enjoyed this book. This book starts where the last book ended. Mason has just left Jess as he doesn’t want his enemies to go after Jess to hurt him so he’s just being his protective self as he cares so much about Jess and doesn’t want her hurt. Jess is extremely heart broken as her and Mason just agreed to give it a go when her and Chandler were attacked by Baruch a Watcher who followed Lucifer to get back at Mason as he blames Mason for their fall from Grace, even if Mason was the Leader of the Watchers when they arrived on Earth not every Watcher drunk bl*od or damned their children to the same fate so it’s each Watcher’s own fault for giving in to the bl*od lust. God knows that Jess could use her father at this time so he allows him to show back up after 15 years and Jess finally finds out the truth about the night the Tear appeared and that her Dad Peter isn’t actually her biological Dad but God allowed him to use part of his own Soul to create her Soul since he’s a Guardian of the Guf (where Souls are created in Heaven). This is the first and last time God has allowed a Guardian to use part of their Soul to create another. I’m really glad that Jess has Chandler to lean on during this time as he helps her heal and they work together to find their next Vessel JoJo and I just love her she’s so carefree, happy and such a breath of fresh air. Chandler, JoJo and Malcolm come up with a plan to get Mason to realise he’s wrong in leaving Jess by ambushing him in his home in Colorado with her all dressed up. Malcolm leaves her at Mason’s house then phases away but if he’d only waited with her until Mason arrived, she nearly wouldn’t have d*ed by Asmodeus phasing her so many times so Lucifer and Mason couldn’t find them since Lucifer had forbidden Asmodeus from harming Jess so he got another Prince of Hell Mammon to do to deed. Luckily JoJo came into her powers while she was making Jess’s dress and that Jess jokingly asked her if she could make her dress invisible since Jess was getting embarrassed but it made JoJo think about the silly request while making the dress so she did it and that saved Jess’s life since Mammon and Asmodeus couldn’t find her when she disappeared and they were scared of Lucifer finding them so they phased away and Jess had just enough time to call out to her Dad before passing out. Her Dad had just enough time to heal her as she was that close to dy*ng since the human body and mind isn’t made to phase that many times. This actually showed Mason that Jess has her own enemies so they’re better off together as Jess would be in danger either way. Chandler makes a stupid decision with Jess that he regretted straight away and I really would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall when Mason and Chandler had their conversation after what Chandler did. Jess gets to meet her biological grandfather and he seems like an amazing guy that is going to be part of Jess’s family in Cypress Hollow. I can’t wait to see where Faison ended up when she decided to go through the Tear since she was grieving the love of her life John Austin’s d*ath and how Jess and Mason’s quest to the other world to get her back home. I hope the trip helps Mason let go of some of his guilt so the scar on his face heals some more like God said it would. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author.

Yayy book 2! I had to continue the story. The last one left me intrigued.

So, we jump right where we left off. A big twist which means answers but more questions arise. Of course, as it would. Mason is being a noble idiot thinking that being away from Jess is the smartest thing. Sighs. Men. Time is running out and they need to find the other vessels in order to stop the devilish plans.

Bleh. Not feeling that cover. She looks like Jess, but she would never wear that. Sighs.

I totally did not expect the big reveal. It all makes sense though and it was a goodie.

Mason is a big dummy. Do you really think staying apart is the best thing? Isn't that what the enemies would want? Separate the two of you so they can kill you? Sighs. Noble moron. I do like him, don't get me wrong, but my goodness. So overplayed. "Leave the girl alone to protect her". WHA? WHAT LOGIC IS THAT!?

Anyways.....

I like Chandler even though he did a dummy move and had a moment of stupidness (see? Men ;D).

Love Jess. Poor girl had a rough time.

Let's see...so hard to write this review since there are a million spoilers....mmm

There was a moment when I did cry. Yes! This made me feel. I was so SHOCKED! Noooo!!! *sobs* Ugh. WHY!?

The ending was good. A smidge of a cliff-hanger, but not as bad as the last one. Yayy for that. I am itching to get my hands on the next book. Maybe I should try print/ebook this time?

I am annoyed at how little happened until near the end. I feel like this was a character building story. Showing us more with Jess and Mason and getting some answers from the previous book. It felt like a transition story more-so. Not a crazy amount of action going on. So it was a little slow at parts.

Grrrr. I am angry with a certain character that I will NOT name since it is a spoiler. I get WHY, but c'mon. Not cool at all! I would be sad and all, but I would be SO mad if I was Jess. Grrrr. But it was another shocker that I didn't see coming. Good job author ;).

The narrator was the same as the last one. I adore her. I want to listen to more by her. She really knows how to show you the story.

In the end, not as amazing as the first. But still really good. It felt like a transition book, to be honest. Lots of character building and question answering. Sure, there are a lot more questions, BUT there were some huge ones answered, so yay there. I am curious to see what happens next in book 3. I'll stamp this with 3

4 ⭐️’s honestly loved this book as well. We get more of that yearning I was looking for in the second book and we meet new characters also. Then what happens with her sister…

⚠️⚠️⚠️‼️Spoiler alert ‼️⚠️⚠️⚠️ don’t read on in the review if you don’t want some things in this book and/or series to be spoiled!

The way her sister decided to go through the tear is CRAZY!!! And God saying Mason should go through it cause there’s something he should see?!?!

Yk part of me kind of wants the MC to be with Lucifer… idk just something about her and Mason are just too perfect. Some of the banter between them is so good, don’t get me wrong but I love the bad boy vibe Lucifer gives off and the FMC continuously sticks up for Lucifer against Mason also. Idk her and Mason are cute or whatever but I just wish more Happened between them.

Also something else to note is that i hope the author doesn’t drag out them getting ready to have “sex” until the last book because that’s a little overkill in you ask me. I get what happened to her and how it causes her to struggle with it but I do feel like it gets brought up way more than it should like damn just fuck already and move on.

I hope we see more of Lucifer and his story… I feel like we haven’t got much of that yet.. I mean idk what he’s even been planning for so long?!

I loved book one and couldn’t wait to dive into this one. The further I got into it the more I wanted it to be over. I had resigned myself to the fact that I would not be getting books 3 or 4. The reasons for this decision was because or Jesse’s instability. She gives me whiplash. From “I’m in love with Mason and he’s the one my man I can ever love” to Mason asking if she’d say yes if he asked her to marry him and her being uncertain that she would. Then there’s he desire to “take him” and how she toys with him knowing dang good and well that she’s not ready for that because of the abuse in her past. I also think that a man like Mason, such a gentleman and a man concerned with pleasing God would want to marry her before bedding her. Jesse just seems really immature when it comes to her relationship with Mason, I suppose that’s because he’s the only guy she’s ever dated.
If it weren’t for Fazen’s disappearance I wouldn’t continue this series but I need to know that she comes back safely and find happiness again after John Austin’s death, which was a huge shocked to say the least.
Once again I’ll say Brittany Pressley did a fantastic job on delivering this story. I’m just amazed at her ability to make each character sound different and be individual.
Alas on to book three…

I really enjoyed it! The story literally picks up in the next sentence from Book #1.

In my opinion, Books #1 and #2 should be one book. It's like someone decided to split the book into two parts. One issue that I had with Book #1 is that very little of the book actually had to do with the Tear, besides mentioning what it was and what happened when it occurred. I was very pleased upon reading the next book in the series (this one) that things finally made sense and circled back to the Tear.

I beg of authors and publishers not to split what should be one book into multiple parts, presumably for profit. That's a real pet peeve and turn off for readers.

Alright, let's move on to the good stuff! Lots of relationship development between Jess & Mason. I really like Chandler and his relationship with Jess, but the moron just about ruined a good thing! Glad he didn't blow it.

I listened to Books #1 and #2 back to back, and I'm glad that I did because the timeline of the story is a continuation between the two books...literally the next moment.

Narrator Brittany Presley is really wonderful!

I saw this offered in the Audible Plus catalog, and I'm glad that I took a chance on it. I'm becoming hooked on this series! Onto Book #3.

Trust in God!

Mason has left Jess to protect her family and friends from the wrath of the fallen angels. She finally is reunited with her father and finds out what he is and why she is even more special than she thought. She needs to draw on all her strength to continue her quest to unite with the other vessels whilst being consumed by her feelings for the man she loves more than life itself. Can she persuade him that they are stronger together or will she be doomed to fight the good fight without him by her side? What do an Angel, a Rockstar and a Fashion Designer have in common? Only God knows! This book ends with an even bigger cliffhanger then the first book. I am so into these characters now that I am off to hinge read the remaining two books as soon as I finish writing this review. I listened to this book for free with Kindle Unlimited.

Not as strong as the first book

This installment of the Watcher Chronicles spends a lot of time on Mason and Jessica, and they're relationship issues. It's not sweet, it's not romantic.

When we spend time with Chandler and Jojo the 3rd bird number 13, comma there isn't much development that happens there. Which is what you said because that's the reason I was reading the book the book, but the author seemed not interested in developing the main story arc.Granted at the end of the book you realized why she didn't further develop those 2 characters and the whole finding finding the rest of the group.Hopefully the 3rd book will be sent in book with Mason and Jessica will actually grow and develop the relationship instead of the silly Lee stuff more back-and-forth of the relationship taking went up forward and 2 steps back.

This book is like attending a pajama party for a 13-year old girl. I found myself rolling my eyes at the amount of love struck chit chat, naivety and all round goodness of the female lead. She is innocence itself. She is also the girl that is so wholesome and good that it feels like I have to swallow whole bran flakes when she thinks or speaks. She even sees the “goodness” in Lucifer. Smh.

I could get onboard with it in the first book as it wasn’t so overwhelming but in the second book, it dominates and the love chitty chitty bang bang is almost the only narrative that happens.

The premise of the story is entertaining though, but it was hard to continue reading when the story took a far far back seat to the lovey dovey oily goo.

I cannot even imagine reading the next instalment, even if it was free.

Kindred ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Read this book if you like:

Book #1: Broken
-Archangels, princes of hell, other supernatural beings
-Reference to Bible characters and stories
-Looking for clues, crowns, talismans & vessels
-Auras
-Slow burn romance
-HOT first kisses
-Strong FMC trying to heal from past SA

I listened to this book on audio & Brittany Pressley is quickly moving up to the top of my fav book narrators! This book, like the first has a depth in the plot, definitely able to carry through a multi-book series, but unlike some series I have read, doesn't make you feel like you are reading "filler" information. There's always a new mystery/problem along with answers that wind along the same path as the overarching mission the characters on. There's also a blossoming romance that I'm rooting for! #kindred #sjwest #brittanypressley #audiobook #paranormalromance #romance #archangels #bookstagram

I have lost more than most and I completely got that over whelming feeling from this book. The pain that West is able to reflect in her writing is incredible and shatters your heart. But as always Mason is there to put you back together with a love so true it burns off the page. While he still longs for a desire that she feels, it gives you that intense feeling of absolute love as read the words.

I was hungry for information about Jess’ family, loved that she was able to connect with what is truly important.

While we find out more not only about Jess (she’s still amazing) we find out about more about Mason too and that understanding of his past makes me love him all the more.

I am absolutely in love with this series.

Another book with false advertising as 'hot'. Don't be fooled.

Yikes....how much tearful near-sex can you fit into a book? This one tries as many times as possible and I think it's two times too many. Seriously, the heroic/chivalric hero doesn't ever try another way to pleasure the tearful heroine. (Maybe because it's a christian romance in 'hot' wrapper that has me thrown).

I'm going into the third book but...man-oh-man, if there's more waterworks with zero foreplay...I'm going to be the one in tears.

Jess is healing from the sexual abuse as a child. Things seem to progress slowly for her and Mason. She finds 2 friends that are like her. Everything is good, right? Yup, that's when something bad happens, just ask Faison.
I like this series. I think finding the others like Jess, Chandler and JoJo is spread a bit long with as important as the story makes it seem. The story itself is interesting, but slightly long winded in spots. Worth the read, however you really need to read book one to fully understand book two.

I loved the first book in the series - so much so, I jumped straight into this second one.

Despite a little bit of lovey-dovey cheese in the first one, there was a plot and character-building and stuff was happening. This second book was ALL cheese. Not much else happening other than an angel's balls getting bluer and bluer by the page-turn. And then the end was ok and kept me hopeful enough to jump straight into the 3rd book - which, fyi, has more happening during the first few pages than the whole 2nd book.

3 might be pushing it, honestly. Idk if I’m going to listen to the rest while they’re still free or not. We’re going on a tangent and it’s already lacking any sense of urgency as it is. I don’t have a problem with her trauma and crying and whatnot because it’s real and that’s part of the character. So is her chaste southern sappiness, but that honey and sweetness and awkward flirting is pushing me over the edge. Honestly I’d like for them to have more work to do to build Mason’s character a bit. And the office Scooby gang from the first book that kind off fell off the story cliff.
