For Lawrence, the seed of all his worries is none other than his adorable only daughter, Myuri, who recently left home. Ever since her departure, this worrisome father has become more haggard and anxious with each passing day. Unable to ignore it any longer, his wife, Holo, entrusts the bathhouse to their friends and proposes that they embark on a journey of their own. To visit their daughter, of course. For the first time in over ten years, their cart returns to the road once again, rumbling along slowly, heavily laden with memories, emotions, and promises to fulfill. Though it's been a long time since they last traveled, the loving couple won't have to go far before they begin to hear rumors of Myuri-or rather, Saint Myuri?! What has that wild girl done now???
“When Lawrence peeked at her writing as she dozed off in her seat from all the alcohol, he saw his name and the sentence, The fool is sometimes of use.”
“What would happen if spring came and went, and they did not return? Selim knew that she would break. Even the eight horse and deer guests staying with them would not stick around forever. Instead of imagining a tomorrow that would be fine no matter what happened, it was far easier for Selim to see a future where everything inevitably went wrong someday.” “Lawrence said he had decided to accept lots of requests from the villagers because Holo wanted to search for her old friend. On the other hand, Holo saw that Lawrence had taken on an enormous task from the villagers, and so she deliberately came up with a reason to continue their journey in order to ensure his work was properly completed. And both of them apologized to Selim, explaining that they might return later than expected.” ““Um…” Selim swallowed and then spoke. “Please return from your travels quickly.” The words she was so convinced someone in her position could not possibly say came out with incredible ease.”
““You would make money even if you slipped down into that hell the Church speaks of so often.” How lucky Lawrence was as a merchant to hear such a compliment.” “In the end, they managed to collect the hive. It was on the larger side, so they could expect to harvest quite a lot of honey from it. The price he paid for it was a bitterness he felt deep in his lungs whenever he coughed, plus three stings on his face, two on his neck, and five apiece on his hands and legs, plus the burning stench of sulfur that came off him in waves, so potent that even he could smell it. But his prize? A smile from Holo so great that it made her eyes literally sparkle.”
Holo was trying to win over Lawrence to buy her more stationery supplies because ever since they embarked on their trip, she had gotten carried away by her good mood and taken advantage of all the free time she had on her hands by writing and then writing some more. Holo might live for hundreds of years yet, but Lawrence would not. He had suggested for her sake and because of their differing life spans that she should write down what happened every day. That way, she could forever enjoy these blissful days, as long as she wrote so much that she would forget what she wrote at the beginning by the time she reached the end. “The meat makes it clear—the forest behind this mansion is of exceptional quality. To think they might lay their hands on it to cut down the wood—it is the height of folly. The bearded one’s point of keeping the trees where they are in the woods is worthy of note.” “But, dear,” she said. “Then how is the ink I always use made?” “Hmm? Well, you boil these nubs from trees that are shaped like seeds called gallnuts. These nubs are also used to tan hide…Huh?” “Oh?” Both Holo and Lawrence looked at each other. “Dear,” Holo said, and a taut smile crossed Lawrence’s face. “…The knowledge might be in my head, but I can’t always take it out at will.” “Much like your purse.” “This idea will protect the forest while still being useful to the villagers at the same time. If they can produce a lot of the expensive ink, then they can make more money for a much longer time than from lumber, which stops being useful once the tree’s cut.”
THE EGGS OF A JOURNEY AND WOLF Eca, história. “Listen, dear.” “What?” “I want one, too!” Still looking in the direction the priests had gone off in, Holo grabbed Lawrence’s arm. Her wolf parts were in a dancing fit under her skirt and her hood. She looked at him and said, red eyes sparkling, “Have a “painting of us done, too!” Holo’s gaze still darted back and forth between the church and Lawrence, but she finally dropped her shoulders in disappointment. She often used her wiles to loosen his purse strings, but she knew how much was inside. She never asked for anything truly outrageous. She must have figured out the sheer cost of paintings from how Lawrence reacted.” “But now she had finally come across one that depicted her daughter, who had the exact same face as her, and Col, whom she had known since he was a child. Of course she would want one of herself, too.” “I whined like a child about wanting the picture, but you cannot create something from nothing. And your wallet is meant for buying me food and drink at the end of the day.” “In exchange, Lawrence was busy filling in all the parts of Holo she had worked to dust. He brushed her hair after getting up in the morning, dressed her, ripped off pieces of bread to feed her, patted her on the head when she got down, complimented her tail—he almost wanted some sort of salary for himself,” “Without the exchange, all the transactions surrounding herring would also vanish from the town. Namely, it would be taking away the women’s livelihood.” “One could not save up money in heaven, but one could save up one’s virtues. So even if they did not take a monetary bribe, a different sort of potion should be able to work on the priests—that was the plan that Lawrence had come up with.” ““…I…understand…I will retract my orders. The exchange will remain open…” When he said that, the mixing girls rejoiced more than anyone else; they stood and cheered.” “They’re going to use you as a reference in the picture they’re painting for the exchange.” “He could not order a painting with his own money, but he could with others’. There were plenty of massively rich people at that exchange who Lawrence barely held a candle to. “And they said they’ll put me at the front of the praying merchants.””
Holo and Lawrence begin a new journey! Fans of the original series will get to enjoy Holo and Lawrence essentially reliving their younger days on the road. They have the vibe of an old couple rather than the insecurity of their unmarried selves, but the stories present a nice blend of travel and moneymaking.
The Review
I’d thought Lawrence and Holo’s traveling days were over, especially given that they’re now proprietors of a popular inn. However, Hasekura-sensei seems to have decided that this couple’s dynamic is best while they are on the road. Thus, thanks to assistance from several non-human types, the pair is journeying again, this time to catch up after their daughter Myuri.
The combination of travel and moneymaking schemes is reminiscent of the original series, but this book retains the Spring Log format. In other words, rather than one continuous narrative, it consists of five short stories, each with its own self-contained arc. However, the first four stories follow one another so closely chronologically that they form a steady look at this new journey.
The first of the four is “Beyond the Steam and Wolf,” written from the perspective of Selim, who’s tasked with running the bathhouse in Lawrence and Holo’s absence. She is a relative newcomer to the Spice and Wolf world, and we get to know the shy, conscientious wolf a bit better as Lawrence and Holo eagerly prepare to leave the village. The perspective then shifts to Lawrence’s once they hit the road. “The Autumn Colored Smile and Wolf” pokes fun at Lawrence’s rusty traveling skills during their first significant journey in over a decade. He then gets to redeem himself in “The Colors of the Forest and Wolf,” when a lord requests their assistance in protecting a forest in his territory. The impact of human activity on the ancient landscape Holo once ruled was a constant thread in the original books, and this story revisits that issue. Then the first leg of their journey ends with them handling the repercussions of Col and Myuri’s activity in “The Eggs of a Journey and Wolf.” This fourth story is a lovely throwback to the original Spice and Wolf tales in that it involves economics (futures trading in herring eggs) and conflict with a religious institution (a young priest who apparently aspires to be just like Col), but it also works in a new element. Preceding Spring Log tales have Lawrence and Holo seeking ways to preserve memories of their days together, and this story introduces a new means for doing just that. An added bonus is that Holo is so desperate to attain it she refrains from her gluttonous ways for once.
The final story in the collection, “Another Birthday and Wolf,” is a brief flashback. Written from Col’s point of view, it chronicles a party celebrating the tenth year of both the Spice and Wolf bathhouse and Myuri. Most of it is Col preparing Myuri for her grand entrance. To be honest, it strikes me as odd that a young man of around twenty is dressing up the ten-year-old girl instead of her mother or another female. At any rate, the interchange makes it very difficult for me to take a romantic Col/Myuri pairing seriously.
Extras include the first eight pages printed in color, world map, six black-and-white illustrations, and afterword.
It's been a while since I read the last Spice & Wolf book, but I still remember most of the details pretty well. That's partly because it's a fairly easy story to remember, but also because things are repeated so many times each book. Which, at this point, is becoming a little annoying, unfortunately. Another thing I'm beginning to have a problem with is the writing style and formatting style in general. It's dry and heavy handed, and the formatting makes it hard to know who's saying what. Which is unfortunate. Doesn't mean I'll stop reading the series, though. Whenever the next book is out in English, I'll probably pick it up, because I like the characters. That said, I was considering reading Wolf & Parchment: New Theory Spice & Wolf, Vol. 3, but I don't think I will. I'm not as invested in Myuri and Col as I am in Holo and Lawrence, so pushing my way through a full book with this writing just because of them as characters isn't enough. Might consider picking up the manga, though...
BEYOND THE STEAM AND WOLF
A cute little tale of Holo and Lawrence's preparations for their upcoming travels. It's a great way to show their love for each other without bluntly saying it. That said, it was told from Selim's POV, and I have to admit she didn't really do anything for me as an MC.

THE AUTUMN-COLORED SMILE AND WOLF
A cute story following right on the heels of the first one. Lawrence and Holo have started their travels, but it's been well over 10 years since they settled down, and not all skills are as reliable as riding a bike, it seems. Really liked how it showed their personalities and dynamic, but there wasn't much of a story-ARC

THE COLORS OF THE FOREST AND THE WOLF
This story was very reminicent of the original series, as it was all about making a profit. At the same time, it hit very close to home for me, and I'm so happy with the conclusion! I liked how, despite being set in "midevil times", this story was very relevant to some of our current issues. Also, the characters were very well written and expressed

THE EGGS OF A JOURNEY AND WOLF
I like that this story tells us a little of the effects that Col and Myuri's actions have on this world, and how it affects everyone, not just the main characters or their peers, but every part of society. Also really enjoyed seeing Holo's growth, as well as the painting-ARC

ANOTHER BIRTHDAY AND WOLF
A short told mostly from Col's POV as he try to get Myuri ready for her debut as a grown lady - at age 10. The only thing I liked was the first part with the coin, but the rest of it seemed rather pointless. And I just can't with the "love" here.
The never-ending saga of Lawrence and Holo! I like the change in pace of these Spring Log volumes, having changed in some ways more similar to a slice of life, a "fairy tale" as Selim puts it. It's enjoyable just to be with these two!
