Tiger's Eye Mystery #6

Apple of My Eye

Rate this book
A detective who turns into a tiger. A pawn shop owner who can see how you'll die. The criminals never had a chance.

If you enjoyed Sookie Stackhouse and True Blood, you’ll love Tess Callahan and the Tiger’s Eye mysteries. Tess and sexy shapeshifter Jack solve mysteries with supernatural flair, and the laughs fly as fast as the clues.” — New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn.

When Tess starts receiving mysterious gifts from a stalker, addressed to "The Apple of My Eye," she starts to worry. Because it's Dead End, Florida, where dead bodies have been piling up faster than competitive pecan pies at the county fair. But when the gifts turn deadly, she and Jack know they have to solve the mystery and track down the stalker before they find another dead body … and this time it might be Tess!

Luckily, Tess has Jack to help her solve this case … because sometimes it takes a tiger's eye to see the truth.

I do love visiting Dead End, Florida. Tess has a stalker and her and Jack finally have their first date. I am so jealous because he took her to Atlantis for dinner. Oh my goodness, it sounds beautiful and I'm jealous. Action, giggles and a stalker with a twisted mind (of course) and Tess in costume for the Dead End Swamp Cabbage Festival parade. I'm excited to read the next one in the series.

Apple of My Eye opens a couple months after the conclusion of Eye of the Storm. Aunt Ruby is now the mayor of Dead End, and Jack’s been away from town (and radio silent) for several weeks. Once Jack returns, he and Tess try to define their relationship and FINALLY go on a real date. And of course, trouble finds Tess; a package addressed to “the apple of my eye” shows up on her porch, inside: a severed finger and fancy engagement ring.

Like the previous Tiger’s Eye Mysteries, Apple of My Eye if filled with fun humor, crazy moments, and mystery solving. Tess chases some red herrings, puts herself in danger, and ultimately catches the bad guy. Her zany methods and quirky life make for a lovable main character. I enjoy following her adventures.

I also appreciate the slow-burn romance between Jack and Tess. They go on a date! And not just any old dinner out; Jack takes Tess to Atlantis to have dinner with Prince Ven and Erin. Since I was an avid read of Ms. Day’s Poseidon’s Warriors series, it was a treat for me to head back to Atlantis. The way Jack adores Tess is swoon-worthy, and I’m glad he isn’t staying away from her “for her own good.” I don’t mind the slow pace of their relationship as long as it progresses with each book.

In the end, I really enjoyed Apple of My Eye. It is a solid story that flowed from beginning to end. The couple of side stories, like Elenor’s concern over her cheating beau, didn’t detract from the overall picture and helped shed light on Tess’s character. I’m looking forward to the next Tiger’s Eye Mystery after the bomb dropped at the end of the Apple of My Eye.

My Rating: B+ Liked It A Lot

Tess and Jack are back in another delightful mess. Tess receives a ring from an admirer. Too bad it’s still on the finger of its original owner. Thus starts this wonderful romp. Between the stalker and the pressure of a second attempt at a first date Tess and Jack have a lot going on. But you know everything is going to turn out just fine and there are laughs along the way. A fun addition to the series.

Such a funny and fun book and series! It is time for the swamp cabbage festival, and a date between Tess and Jack and another mystery. Someone is leaving mysterious gifts for Tess and the gifts are not nice. A good mystery with all fun and hijinks you have come to expect from this series. Fast moving, action filled and laugh out loud moments. I am always looking forward to the next book from this series.

Sixth in the Tiger's Eye Mystery cozy paranormal mystery series and revolving around that amateur sleuth, Tess Callahan in Dead End, Florida.

My Take
Like Andy says, Tess keeps on attracting those body parts, and we learn just how Tess feels about it through Day’s use of first person protagonist point-of-view from Tess’ perspective.

Day always manages to include some interesting bits of Dead End history.

Eleanor learns a good lesson on communication — with no assumptions. I do love Day’s description of Shelley, speaking mainly in exclamation points, lol.

There’s a lot happening in Apple of My Eye. Shelley’s mom’s brother wants to take Shelley! The Swamp Cabbage costume dilemma. The unearthed skeleton. Sussing out the woman with whom Bill is cheating! A missing Mellie. The jealousy and greed at the Swamp Cabbage Festival. That dinner in Atlantis that contrasts with Tess’ feelings about Jack’s disappearance. The bullying Brig. Those increasingly awful “gifts” someone is sending Tess. Then there’s Tess’s younger admirer.

Jack is so cute. His comment about his previous very active and “exciting” life and comparing it to the peaceful life in a small town made me wanna cry. Of course, he does have to answer for just taking off for so long!

It seems that Aunt Ruby can be sweetly intimidating in an interrogation, lol.

It’s a sweet and cozy mystery with a wide range of quirky characters you can’t help but laugh with (and at!).

The Story
It’s Swamp Cabbage Festival time and Tess has to decorate the pawn shop for the event. Right along with many others. Until Aunt Ruby insists Tess step in and wear that smelly Swamp Cabbage clown costume!

Even better, Jack gets an invitation to dinner in Atlantis! Still, it isn’t enough to still those morbid thoughts Tess has about Jack sticking around.

Worse to come? Lucky found a skeleton.

The Characters
Tess Callahan is a touch sensitive. Well, that’s too broad a category, the first time she touches most people, she sees how they’ll die. Lieutenant Uhura, a.k.a. Lou, is her cat. Aunt Ruby (the newly elected mayor of Dead End) and her retired uncle Mike Callahan raised Tess when her mother died and her father left. Uncle Mike still makes use of his engineering knowledge to fix anything and everything. The busy Shelley is Tess’ new sister ( Dead Eye , 1) fascinated by robotics and history. Tess’ maternal grandmother is a banshee ( Private Eye , 2). Bonnie Jo is their ailing pet horse.

Jack Shepherd, a former commander of the rebels and a Bengal tiger shifter, operates Tiger’s Eye Investigations in the office next to Tess’ Dead End Pawn. He’s on good terms with Atlantean royalty.

Dead End Pawn is . . .
. . . the pawnshop Tess inherited from Jack’s uncle Jeremiah. Fluffy, a taxidermied gator, is the shop mascot. Eleanor Wolf is Tess’ only employee, and she’s a fair but tough negotiator. Some of Tess’ customers include the GYSTERs, tourists on a Golden Years Swamp Tours bus run by Mr Holby.

Dave Wolf, Eleanor’s son, runs a construction business; his son is Zane. Dave had been best friends with Jack back in the day. Bill Oliver (of the stuffed jackalope in Eye of Danger , 4) is Eleanor’s fiancé — and she thinks he’s cheating on her. Molly Chen has been Tess’ best friend since grade school. Now Molly is an up-and-coming star with the Scarlett’s Letters and dating Lucky. Dice is her too-angry guitarist.

Dead End, Florida, is . . .
. . . a small town where most state and federal laws don’t apply and where everyone knows and accepts everyone else, even those supernaturals. Deaf Mr Russell, Amelia Howard doesn’t mind it but her parents, and the kindly Pastor Caleb Nash prefer that Tess not sing in church. Henrietta Nash is the pastor’s wife, and they have three children. Carlos Gonzalez, a vampire and Susan’s brother, is Tess’ neighbor with whom she shares a driveway. Dallas and Austin Fox, twin brothers and ex-Special Forces/Army rangers, who are computer geniuses; they and Lucky are some of the Swamp Commandos who operate an airboat business.

Beau’s is the only sit-down restaurant in town where Lorraine has waitressed for over 50 years. And she had once been the mayor. The Dead End Gazette is the local paper. Mellie’s Bakery does good donuts, but Mellie's current help, Cousin Vern, isn’t very good. Lucky for Mellie, Dallas likes her. Lauren Rollins owns Lauren’s Deli. The Peterson boys, Emeril and Harold, now run Dead End Hardware. The serious and pompous Olav Haroldsson is the president of the Dead End First National Bank and not too happy those antics the Petersons get up to. Doc Cahill is the town veterinarian.

The much better sheriff is Susan Gonzalez, and Deputy Andrew Kelly is a godsend. Belle is the police dispatcher. Special Agent Alejandro Vasquez is with the Paranormal Operations Division of the FBI and friends with Tess and Jack.

Susan and Carlos’ grandmother is hanging out with her deceased husband — and it’s worrying the family.

Marvin became a vampire and now drives the night shift. The ancient Mr and Mrs Frost — she can be deadly with that crossbow — get around. Rooster Jenkins raises goats. Darla Holliday caused a fight between Mrs Quindlen and Granny Josephine. I’m not sure how Mr Quindlen felt about it. Winifred “Win” is a hussy! Mrs Lee had owned a restaurant for forty years. Mr Charpentier is a chef. Bubba McKee has a pet boa constrictor. Yasmine is a garden witch. Vince is the “best” quarterback for the Dead End Manatee football team, and he likes older women *eyebrow waggle*. Ann Feeney is missing a finger. Brenda Sweeney used to date Vern. Elmer Krantz works at the Pit Stop. Sue-Ellen Bishop has had a cold. The Jenkins cousins are in town for the festival. Annabelle Hannah Yorgenson was the first time Tess’ gift manifested. Owen, a dentist, is Tess’ former boyfriend.

Sheriff Lawless, oh, former sheriff — he’s in prison now ( Dead Eye ). Ratbottom is also a former, a former mayor ( Eye of Danger , 4).

Riley is the queen of Atlantis through her marriage to King Conlan ( Atlantis Rising , 1).

The obnoxious Brigham Hammermill the Fourth, a.k.a. Brig, died in a squall while out in his yacht. Kowalski had been an evil witch ( Dead Eye ).

Swamp Cabbage is also known as hearts of palm or sabal palm.

The Cover and Title
The cover is warm with the dulled yellow building in the upper background. I adore the deep porch on the front of it. The lower half of the cover is a lawn in two shades of green. Just this side of the darker green is Jack in tiger form standing in profile, inquisitively sniffing for that apple that the black-shorts-and-tank-top-clad, red-haired Tess has knelt down to pick up. At the very top is an info blurb in white. Below that is the author’s name in a paler yellow. The title is beneath Tess in white as is in the series info below that.

The title is all about those stalker’s notes and gifts to the Apple of My Eye.

Another enjoyable outing in Dead End with Tess and Jack. I’ve given up on this series ever sticking to its publishing dates - so hopefully there will be another book ready for me to read next time I think to look it up.

Well, it was an easy read, and cute. That said, I am so over the creepy stalker plot, particularly since it always seems to involve the h being pleasant to someone she feels sorry for, who for some ungodly reason decides to interpret that as “she’s into me!”

Anyway…that’s pretty much the plot. Highlights involve them finally going on a date.

Lowlight is when the lightbulb finally goes off, Tess, instead of staying in a crowd and letting people who know what they’re doing handle it, charges off to “help”. Come to think of it, she always does that, which is kinda dumb given her lack of training.

Laugh out loud fun.

Small town life isn't for everyone but Tess owner of Dead End Lawn wouldn't live anywhere else and not just because of her unique ability to touch people and experience how they die, so Dead End suits her fine. The town for even more interesting when tiger shifter and ex leader of the resistance moved back to town after the death of his uncle. Jack Shepard ---------- familiar to all who read the Warriors of Poseidon series-------------- just wants a quiet life after all he's been through. Tess captivated him from the moment they meet, unfortunately trouble has started following Tess everywhere she goes. Each book is written from Tess's point of view and are wickedly funny. There is a large cast of supporting characters the most notable being Tess's uncle and aunt.we also get to revisit with some of Jack's friends from the Warriors books in this story. Each story has it's own mystery to be solved but the violence is very mild and the books have a family friendly feel to them. I am a big fan they are perfect for when you want somthing light and easy to enjoy.

-162 pages.

-3 stars. still wish these were full length novels instead of novellas. i've gotten tired of all the short, easily solved mysteries. i guess there's supposed to be twenty of them.

"the woman who'd raised me, loved me, and stifled me with a cocoon of caring, and who, when we went somewhere together, still -to this day- would ask me if i had to use the bathroom before we left the house." [my mom still does this]

"i live a life where dead bodies regularly show up at my shop's back door, alligators get left on my front porch at home, and i can see how people will die just from touching them, so definitely, let's worry about poor fragile tess and what's fair to me."

"don't start thinking of me as a damsel in distress, or we're going to have a problem."

"hint: to change any uncomfortable subject with a southern woman of aunt ruby's generation, imply that her hospitality or pie skills are not quite up to snuff."

"i know things. i drink lemonade, and i know things."
"quit misquoting game of thrones at me."

"that is the craziest thing i've ever heard."
"so. you're in?"
"i'm in."

After a few weeks reprieve, Tess has a stalker this time. Jack and Tess once again try to figure out who is behind it while still keeping the local Sheriff’s office in the loop. And I was starting to get worried I’d never see the day. But …
It’s finally happening?!?!
Tess and Jack’s first official date and man that will be a hard one to top! As a result of the first date, I realized there is a whole other series that I will one day need to pick up.

I love this series and all of the characters so much. Each character adds another dimension that makes the story that much more fun! My only complaint is that the author continues to explain certain people or places as if we have never been introduced to them. Another author I recently read did and I was 20 books into that series. It gets annoying and extra repetitive for no reason. Aside from that I cannot quit this series. As soon as I finish one I immediately pick up the next book.

Happy Reading!

A fun romp in Dead End.

This was a quick read at just over 200 pages, but the author managed to cram quite a lot into this - I want to call in a novella? - book. Things are finally starting to progress in their romantic life, and I get the feeling that Jack’s surprise after he kisses Tess means he’s perhaps thinking of something more permanent than marriage 😉.

On the downside, I feel that Tess seems to have too much bad luck in being the target of all these killers and weirdos, maybe it’s about time someone from Jack’s past causes the problems. Also, the books seem to get shorter as the series goes on and it’s becoming noticeable in how the books seem to progress. Still, an enjoyable read in a fun series and after that teaser ending I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Tess and Jack.

It’s almost time for the Swamp Cabbage Festival and Jack has finally returned from his secret out-of-town job. Tess isn’t sure she wants to forgive him for leaving without a word, but he’s so scrumptious she keeps forgetting.

Very fast-paced, funny story. I love the crossover into Jack’s Atlantis Warriors series ties. Flowed in perfectly. But I wish Tess would figure out how she feels about Jack and stop leaving him hanging. Can’t wait for the next book.

Footnote: The main character owning a pawn shop idea reminds me of the ‘Midnight, Texas’ trilogy by Charlene Harris. Only hers is darker.

Fave scenes: Jack’s Cub Scout, Molly’s perfectly timed surprise, sneaking up to Mr. Oliver’s house and the kids playing with the swamp cabbage costume.

So, you wouldn't think it would happen again, I mean really, what are the chances of more bodies or body parts showing up at your place of business?! Well this is Dead End and well, anything is possible. So, when Tess opens a mysterious box, well....the search begins! It's not always a good thing to be "the apple" of someone's eye, the only person Tess wants to notice her is Jack and guess what.....it's date night, and guess where Jack is taking her?!
Suspenseful, fun, and just a dash of crazy, all of the reasons I turned the first page of the first book in the series, cuz, Alyssa only writes amazing stories, and every reason why I keep turning every page of each book that has followed. And yes, I am looking forward to the next installment!

I really like this series and get to see another side of Jack. In the other series he was so ferocious and now he is so tender with Tess. Tess is really missing Jack. He has been gone for a long time and hasn't bothered to call to let her know he is fine. Then one day, he just appears. He knows she is mad. As they are having dinner, she gets a present from a secret admirer. It is a very creepy present and it doesn't stop there. Tess seems to think it was a man she met a couple of years before and then she suspects the minister. She really has let her imagination run wild. Who can it be? Jack will do everything to protect her. They are finally going to get their date with no interruptions. Jack has a big surprise for their date.

Jack is back in town and he and Tess may actually be able to go on their very first date! But, . . .

A gift shows up on Tess' back porch, addressed to "The apple of my eye", containing a beautiful diamond and sapphire ring . . . on a severed finger! Is the woman dead? Who does the finger belong to? Why is the gifter obsessed with Tess? Can Tess and Jack ever have a "normal" date?

The characters are those we've come to love from Dead End, FL The story is well written (I figured it out just a few pages before the culprit was revealed).

Come read this wonderful book and see if you can do better at solving the mystery.

In another great Tiger’s Eye Mystery, Tess and Jack have finally gone on their first date, a stalker is sending very concerning gifts to Tess addressed to “The Apple of My Eye,” the town is getting ready for the annual Swamp Cabbage Festival, Jack is beginning to grow on Aunt Ruby and Uncle Mike, and Tess has to help her friend Eleanor spy on a love interest. I love the humor, the small town charm, the antics of the locals, and the blossoming romance between Tess and Jack. All of the secondary characters are a lot of fun in addition to the two main characters, and I look forward to the next story in the series.

Tess and Jack are back and steaming up the pages... or maybe not quite yet...lol
What’s a girl to do when someone starts leaving her lovely gifts??? I mean seriously lovely gifts that are quite unique and definitely creepy???
Poor Tess she just can’t catch a break, Jack is finally home and they should be focusing on moving their relationship forward but something always comes up.
I do have to give Jack extra points for best first date ever though lol he nailed that one.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Great book

Tess is getting ready for the Swamp Cabbage Festival, Jack returns to town,it's time for their first date. What could go wrong? But this is Dead-end Florida where abnormal is the norm, so Tess has a secret admirer that sends her a finger with a ring on claiming and a note saying she is the apple of his eye. Things go from there. I loved this book. Jack and Tess finally go on their first date, and I loved where Jack chose to take her. Read the book to find out the rest, I think you will like it as much as I did.

Another hit

Once again Alyssa Day has written a gem. I love all the regulars in the series. The town is full of quirky people, and they all manage to function as a community. Tess, again is having trouble including body parts dropped off at her place, but Jack is back to protect her from this latest threat, as well as her nutty friends with their problems, and sometimes herself. I loved it, and I can't get enough of Dead End,Florida. I live in Florida, and I could believe a crazy place like this. Highly recommend this, and all her writing.

This is the 6th book in this series and I have not read the previous 5 so I may have missed some key information from those 5 that might have helped. This is a cozy mystery with fantasy thrown in. I did not get drawn into it like I usually do with a cozy mystery that is usually a bit fun and just an in-between books read for me. I thought it was very superficial with fantasy thrown in. I will give book one a try to see if it might change my mind. The characters were fun as well as the small town setting.

Finally, the date

Solder one mystery, but left us hanging on another. Jack and Tess finally, finally had their date. Love how 2 other series are roped into this book. If you haven't, go read the Cardinal Witches series (you will laugh until you cry). And Poseidon 's Warriors. It wi!l give more perspective to this book, but this book will stand on its own ...in the Tiger's Eye series.

This book was disappointing. Especially after the LONG wait for it. It is a bridge book that really didn't accomplish anything except set up for the next book. Ms. Day says she's going to write 20 Tiger's Eye books and that's good, I look forward to that, but I hope the others have a little more substance. There was the trademark humor, which I enjoyed and it's a fun read.

As always with the Tiger's Eye books you will be laughing out loud at times and wondering who did it also. And.....we finally get to the last one available from my library's consortium. Phew.
And....they kind of sort of consider that they're kind of sort of dating. Ugh.
And....I skimmed because this mystery didn't even make the tiniest bit of sense to me, so it's more like a DNF.
And....we're done.

PS. These are PG books if you're looking for something clean to read.

A supernatural or paranormal mystery, murder and romance.

A supernatural or paranormal town of Dead Eye has Tess with her own supernatural power and in spite of her desire fore a quiet life, bodies seem to find her. The intrigue deepens when her “friend” Jack returns from a hush hush mission and things in Dead Eye heat up in more ways than one.

Send me no more presents!

Tess and Jack are finally going on a date and it’s a truly amazing experience. But someone’s sending gifts to Tess that are ominous. What does it all mean? Tess can’t think who it could be and Jack is investigating someone from her past. Will they find the answers they’re looking for or are they in for another surprise? A fun read.

Non-stop Action!

I gave this book 5 stars since it has the perfect amount of action and romance in it. It's humorous to boot and a page turner, too!

I loved the part about the Swamp Cabbage. The relationship between Tess and Aunt Ruby is hilarious but loving. I laughed outloud when the 'feral' kids rolled Tess, in costume, around.
