Jake: More like one almost-taking-a-baseball-to-the-face can change your life. My first game in the MLB and I make a fool out of myself by looking in the stands when I know better. But those deep brown eyes on that woman penetrated my mind, made me lose focus, and left me more curious about her than I’d ever felt about another person. Fate intervened, and before I knew it, I was willing to risk everything to make this woman mine. They say everything happens for a reason though…which means when her world falls apart and she pushes me away, I have to believe that fate will befall us again. Danielle changed my life with just one look, and I can’t let her get away again…
Danielle: I could kill my best friend. After locking eyes with the hotshot rookie of the OC Rays, Lochlin decides to play wing-man and gives my number to the infamous Jake Calhoun. Never in a million years did I think he’d actually contact me, but I guess he must have felt that same magnetic pull that I did when we locked eyes during his first game. As I get to know him more, I fall hard, and the reality of dating a professional baseball player smacks me in the face. Then tragedy impacts my life and suddenly, my priorities have changed and self-doubt poisons my mind. Dad told me to trust my path, but sometimes, life can make us veer off course. Jake comes back into my world and I immediately feel that pull to him again. But is it enough? Can our past merge with our future? Can that look in his eyes remind me of the passion we shared before?
They say one moment can change everything. But sometimes, you have to trust the timing of your life.
Harlow James is a wife and mom who fell in love with romance novels, so she decided to write her own.
Her books are the perfect blend of heartwarming, addictive, and steamy romance. If you love stories with strong females, found family and friend groups, and plenty of emotion and steam with a guaranteed Happily Ever After, then Harlow is your new best friend.
When she's not writing, she can be found working her day job, reading every romance novel she can find time for, laughing with her husband and kids, watching re-runs of FRIENDS, and spending time cooking for her friends and family while drinking champagne or a blended margarita.
⚜Rate: ★★★★★
English: "One Look" by Harlow James is the first book I read from this author, who has a series known as "Hopetown". This book is a sports romance, new adult with two characters from different worlds, but with one look, everything changes.
It's Jake Calhoun's first MLB match, but a look at the stands makes him notice a young blonde and lose his concentration. He doesn't know how, but he wants to meet this mysterious girl and make her his. Danielle Peters isn't sure if Jake Calhoun was looking at her, but in the next games, she realizes that it is. But not all that glitters is gold and behind Jake, the paparazzi are constantly behind him and investigating who is the young woman who stole his heart. It's a story where one look makes two people have an instant crush. Each one carries a different weight on them, but they can't get rid of it, even if it gives them a break.
“I made the mistake of looking into the stands and saw a beautiful girl. It made me lose focus”
From the first moment, Jake is a character who stays out of that world where the players are womanizers and stuff. But when he sees Dani, he knows perfectly well that she is the only one who can steal his heart, and so she did.
“She’s different. And in a few days, she’ll be mine for a whole day. I’ll get to hear her voice, smell her hair, touch her skin. Hopefully, kiss her lips. I want to see the way she moves, how her lips curl when she smiles, how her eyes light up when she gets enlivened about something she’s passionate about.”
Dani has his little brother and grandfather to keep his feet on the ground, but the beginning of the relationship with Jake, although idyllic, there are things that do him no good. But everything falls apart in Dani's life, and that's where a new part in the book begins, three years later, where a new reunion will make both of them realize what they had and how much they lost.
“Oh, I plan on spending every incredible and not so incredible moment of my life with you forever, Dani… which is why we’re here, at this very spot, where our story began and hopefully, will continue until the universe says it’s time for it to end.”
It's been a book with which I've had tears, some moments, and others have been very sweet and tender. Without any doubt a very recommendable book for those people who look for a history of both with some emotional ups and downs. ⚜Rate: ★★★★★
Okay.. I’m feeling a 3.5 star on this one. Maybe 3 stars. I liked it. It wasn’t my favorite but I liked it. Kept my interest... especially for being a thick one! But who’s doesn’t like ‘em thick, right? lol
There were a few things that just didn’t work for me but I liked it and I’ll be recommending. Who doesn’t love a sexy baseball player?!
This book was beautiful!! I loved every minute of it and I dinner want it to every end. This book was so adorable and written so well. This was also my first read by the Harlow and it certainly won’t be the last. Jake is the debut baseball player and rookie , he is hard working and the perfect fit for Dani. Dani is the a huge baseball fan, and is alway there for her family. Jake and Dani’s chemistry was instant, especially with the help of Lochlin. This story was filled with love for family, chemistry, heart warming moments, and seconds chances at love. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves sports romances and swooning moments!
Thank you so much Harlow James for this opportunity to read this book!
This is just what I needed! I loved everything about this book! It is an emotional story filled with love, sizzling hot chemistry, heartbreak, second chance, and a wonderful happy ever after. The author writes it in such a way that you feel like you are experiencing everything right along with Dani and Jake. This is the first book by Harlow James that I have read and I enjoyed it immensely. I am anxious to read more by her!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ And A Half Stars ⭐️ It’s no secret that I absolutely love sports romance books so when the opportunity to read an ARC of this book presented itself, I was all over it. In what happens to be one of my favorite meet cutes ever Jake and Dani’s love story begins. One Scorching Hot Intense Look across the baseball field and into the bleachers is all it takes for fireworks to go off between these two. Jake is a rookie, playing for his first MLB team, during his debut game he looks across third base and connects with Dani. Dani is a determined young woman helping to raise her younger brother after the tragic death of her parents. Neither one is looking for a relationship but both fall hard and fast for one another. However not all that glitters is gold and both have a hard time overcoming their fears and anxieties over the relationship. When tragedy strikes, things end between them. Years later a second chance presents itself and Jake is determined to not lose the best thing that ever happened to him a second time. Their happily ever after is much deserved and a sweet ending to this great book.
oh Jake and Dani!!!! where to even begin!!!! that instant love that "one look" was all it took to just keep reading! the emotional rollercoaster the heart pounding crying your eyes out moments is just truly well done. you are rooting for them from the start and when their paths take them seperate ways you just know theres no way they can stay apart! they grew while apart but their love and hearts never actually grew apart from one another. and can i just say that Harlow you better tell my man he needs to propose to me that way for the next 100 years over and over again!! what a great instant love but totally meant to be love story.
Told in dual pov’s as well as two parts-when Jake and Danielle meet until their break up, then picking up three years later-One Look turned out to be a really sweet, second chance romance!
I enjoyed Jake and Danielle’s quirky courtship and got a kick out of their family and friends relationship advice. My favorite was how sure they both knew they’d met the One, especially when they had to deal with public scrutiny amidst the paparazzi and feeling like a bug under a microscope. Even though Dani is the one to call things off, they both clung to the fact that they were meant to be together and frankly, I liked that Jake did occasionally see other people. (It’s implied, no real detail) Technically, he was single. Heck, they both were for that matter, but Dani’s focus was on her brother instead of a love life. And Jake wasn’t super loose; if nothing else, he learned fairly quick Dani was still it for him and gave up on any pretense of moving on.
Jake and Dani didn’t have perfection; they had an honest friendship, great chemistry and an instinctive understanding of one another’s emotional needs. While this led to smexy make sessions and awkwardly cute moments, it also had them bonding on levels unseen, giving credence to their feelings.
Overall, I really enjoyed One Look. It was sweet and charming, with sexy times and funny moments. There’s also the poignant reminder of life passing by and to grab on when you have the opportunity to. Sometimes the timing is spot on, while others are fleeting moments that pass in the blink of an eye.
One Look is a must read that makes you realize the struggles in life are always worth it. It’s filled with chemistry, baseball, laughter and a great Eminem reference right on the first page.
It’s a sweet second chance romance that has all you need for a a great read.
Dani is strong willed and Jake is so tender hearted. He’s a rookie ball player for the MLB so of course I jumped on this one once I heard it was a sports romance. While Dani is a college student who helps her grandpa raising her brother. Dani and Jake are drawn to each other from first glance during a game. It was a bit of insta love but it was written well, It’s a little bit of slow burn which I loved until Dani and Jake actually start seeing other. But once they’re together they really balanced each other out.
I loved reading about Dani and Jake, the story is written so that you’re with them every step of their journey. Dani They teach you to be strong during rough times and to always trust your path!
4.5/ 5 stars

It took Jake and Dani one look to fall in love. It took me one reading to fall in love with their story.
One Look is only one book. Yet, it felt almost like a series to me. We follow the characters' love story like a journey. It was love at first sight. Then love at a second chance.
Harlow James once again manages to find the right balance between a riot of emotions - romance, heat, sadness, loss and even suspense, playing with our hearts expertly.
I confess that I have been team Jake 100% since the beginning, both in and out of the field and nearly wanted to slap Dani for her stubbornness at times. Thankfully, I lived vicariously through the character of her best-friend Lochlin. Thanks, for secondary characters!
I didn’t really know what to expect besides a basic romance story. Honestly I love baseball so I figured it was worth a try. LET ME TELL YOU!! It was well worth it. True love, uncertainty, heartache and baseball can hardly sum up this story. I loved every word and truly emerged myself in it. Jake and Dani were both shocked but the instant attraction of one look and the love story to follow was so fun to read.
This is a sports romance without being all full-blown sports romancy. It was sooooo sweet and spicy! And that whole part.... my heart stopped. Really loved how honest this one felt as well. Harlow is on a roll as a writer.
WOW. Harlow James has officially outdone herself AGAIN. Every time I open one of Harlow’s stories, I know I’m in for a treat. Harlow has a delicate eloquence in the way she writes. It’s not stuffed full of unnecessary flowery language that takes away from the beauty and originality of the characters. Everything just works, it’s as simple as that, but it’s what makes all the difference. James is surly a staple for your romance collection. You will fall in love with each and every one of her characters. She truly bested herself with this new piece. Refreshing, energizing, charming, and rebellious, One Look leaves you gasping for air and begging for more. And umm can we talk about those love scenes because oooooooweeee they were SUPER hot.
We’re introduced to our leading man, Jake, as he’s starting out his career as a professional baseball player. His first home game…and he meets his soul mate. How insanely romantic is that? GAH. Such good story-telling. Jake meets Dani’s gaze in the stands after his first home run and she’s his end game from then on out. She is destined for him and he knows it. He can’t stop thinking about her, he looks for her all the time, he dreams about her…it’s literally a fantasy. Like umm where’s MY professional baseball player please and thank you? Anyway, so Dani feels exactly the same way. She can’t stop thinking about him either, and her family (her, her brother, and her grandfather) have season tickets to all the home games of the OC Rays, the team Jake plays for. So they pretty much see each other every few days. Dani becomes Jake’s good luck charm as they begin dating (thanks to Dani’s best friend Lochlin).
Side note: PLEASE give Loch and Rocky a book. PLEASE. I neeeeeed it.
Then, of course, as in any well-written novel, tragedy strikes. I won’t tell you what happens, but it pulls Jake and Dani apart. They hadn’t even said the big ILY yet…so that was rough to witness. Yes, I was crying. THEN WE SKIP TO THREE YEARS LATER. AH. No contact for three freaking years, guys. I was very emotional about this. Fate steps in and brings our lovers back together. Dani starts working for the OC Rays and Jake is playing for the team. It’s explosive. It’s like they never broke up. They picked up exactly where they left off. Dani being the cautionary one, and Jake being head-over-cleats (lol) in love with her and throwing caution to the wind. They get their HEA and it is magical.
Wow just wow. This was a GREAT book. An awesome five star read. I enjoyed every second of it. Just the cutest story about two humble, sweet humans that needed love and found it in each other. Jake is such a dream and sweet Dani is so deserving. I could gush forever about how much I loved this journey, but you should just go check it out for yourself.
“One look, Dani. One look is all it took for me to know that we were meant to be in each other’s lives. I’m not going anywhere.”
OMG, this book hurt my soul! It is so beautifully written, you are literally there every step of the way with these characters. Jake is a baseball player making his debut into the big leagues when he looks across the field and locks eyes with Danielle and sparks instantly fly. Is it fate that Jake and Danielle are meant to end up together or just a one off thing? Well you’re going to find out in this book.
Jake and Danielle are two well written characters. Firstly, you have Jake, this hard working, sexy young man who loves baseball and is intrigued by Danielle. On the other side you have Danielle who is a baseball fanatic, living with her grandfather and younger brother whilst having everyday responsibilities. When the relationship between Jake and Danielle first stars it is really cute, but you do see the strain that the media and life in general have on them both. When tragedy strikes Danielle and she pushed Jake away it is really heartbreaking and you feel for both of these characters.
What I really loved about this book is that it was set over a matter of years and showed growth, strength and personal changes for each of the characters. Danielle is so strong in part of this book that you are literally sobbing when you read what she and her family are going through and then you have Jake who will do anything to make sure that he and Danielle are together. They are soul mates and Jake just wants Danielle to get on the same page as him, working together through all of the hard things rather than independently. The chemistry between the two characters is off the charts HOT, this is an intense, heartbreaking, need to get to the end of the book enjoyable read that you won’t put down until the final word is written.
If you haven’t read Harlow James before, this is a good place to start!
The instant their eyes connect the fluttering in her belly starts, then the doubt settles in, and she thinks there is no way possible that the OC Rays new rookie Jake Calhoun is checking her out.... or is he? Danielle enjoys the quick little interaction and the thrill it brings, then promptly chocks it up to a one time chance kind of thing.
Then she goes to another game and it happens again, and this time her traitorous best friend decides to play matchmaker and slips him Dani's phone number. Never expecting him to call, Dani brushes the encounter off again. But then he takes her completely by surprise and calls, and asks for a date. That date is the start of something truly special and unexpected for both of them, once that connection takes hold they don't want to let it go... but tragedy strikes and threatens to take it all away.
Within the pages of One Look readers will find a passionate and sweet story about a couple brought together by an insanely powerful look, and a meddling best friend. I loved this story so much, after a paragraph in I knew there was no way I was putting it down until the last page was turned. I was immediately pulled into the pages, and left enamored by every word... the feels were unreal. The chemistry between Dani and Jake was off the charts, it was intense, palpable, and kept the heat level at a steady simmer... their was no denying the connection between these two. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute spent getting acquainted with these wonderfully crafted characters, their story brought many swoons and heart-squeezing moments to revel in. Highly recommend you get your hands on this one, it's guaranteed to take you on a thoroughly satisfying literary escape!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
Harlow is an author I love and feel so honored to know!
And I have to say that this is by far her best book so far she has written! I seriously was hooked after the end of chapter 1 people!
Jake and Dani’s story was so beautiful, sweet and just all around amazing! Such a different take for sports romance and I just loved it.
Jake is starting out his rookie year in the MLB and nerves are getting to him but he is so excited. This has been his dream since 5 years old. As he takes the field, getting in the zone, he does something he never does. With just one look up in the stands he locks eyes on a beauty that knocks off all his senses.
Baseball is life for Dani. Growing up in it and going to games all the time, she truly loves all things baseball. So seeing cute baseball players is nothing new to her. But the one time she locks eyes with the 3rd baseman on the field, she knows instantly that this isn’t a typical baseball player crush, this is so much more. But can she handle it?
Like I said this book was everything. God the love story between Jake and Dani was just so cute. I swear I was giddy and giggly all through this book haha.
Everyone needs to go out and read this book. If you love baseball or any sports romance you will absolutely love this!
This book is in my top favourite reads of 2020. I loved every single moment of this book and couldn't put Jake and Dani's story down. I'm still thinking about it and I read it a couple weeks ago. First off I have to say that I'm a huge sucker for meet cute stories and instant attraction/love stories and this book did not disappoint. I loved how Jake chose to look up into the stands during his first MLB game and locked eyes with Dani and effectively changed the course of both their lives forever. This book is told in dual POV's and I really enjoyed being able to get both main characters views on things and how they both were individually feeling. I instantly felt invested in their story and found both Jake and Dani to be very relatable. They both went through different hardships in the course of the book and had their ups and downs but I loved how they never forgot about one another and always gravitated back to each other. The book has two parts to it (when Jake and Dani first meet and then later on in the book it shows three years later). I felt so many emotions while reading this book. This book is so well written and is heartfelt and emotional. I laughed, cried and swooned in this book and I can honestly say I need some of the secondary characters in this book to get their own stories. I highly recommend this book!
I loved this book - I honestly think it was amazing. I had such a hard time putting it down but at the same time didn’t want it to end! Jake, a rookie MLB player, spots Dani, a PR student, in the stands during his debut game and cannot get her out of his head. Dani’s best friend, Lochlin, steps in and makes sure Jake gets Dani’s number. What follows is a sort-of whirlwind romance between the two. When tragedy strikes Dani’s family she pushes Jake away. Years later, their paths cross again. Is it fate again? Can they move away from their pasts and into a shared future? This book was so well-written. Told in alternating first-person, we get both main characters points of view. Harlow did such a good job of making me feel what both Jake and Dani were feeling. I found myself relating to both of them, even when they were at odds with each other. Jake was the perfect hero - seriously still swooning! I loved his determination to get Dani both in the past and the present.
If you love sports romance, new adult romance, or contemporary romance I wholeheartedly recommend this one!
A solid 4.5 stars. I'm really missing baseball, and this book helped fill that void.
Dani has had some tragedy in her life. She's working hard to get through college and start her career and helping her Grandpa raise her younger brother. Jake is the hotshot new rookie on the team, determined to stay focused only on baseball and have an outstanding rookie year.
It only took one look to change both their lives forever.
The book had a lot of emotion. There is fun light hearted banter and humor. There is heartbreak.
The supporting cast of this book was great as well and added a lot to the storyline.
I love a good slow burn romance and a second change romance, and this book was most definitely a two-fer as far as those go.
I won't spoil the story, but their romance wasn't easy and you'll just have to read to find out if they get that HEA!
One Look by Harlow James is a novel that exceeded my expectations with every chapter I read. I loved the dynamic relationship between Jake and Danielle. It’s sweet and complicated but overall romantically fulfilling relationship. Nonetheless, It was a surprising read from start to finish, especially the beginning where Danielle’s friend sneaks her phone number into Jakes possession. It’s an overall sweet story of two people being brought together by something you can almost call “love at first sight”. This book had me hooked paragraph after paragraph, and I just couldn’t put it down. Harlow James has a way with words that made me swoon. At the end of it all, I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read it again!!
I really enjoyed this book. The story with Dani was beautiful finding true love after all the heartache she had been through, i loved the sentiment that was implemented by her past. Jake ooh i envisioned him as the hunk he was described 😍 and he unwavering need to keep the connection he found with Dani was so lovely 😊 i laughed and even more surprising cried 😂 this was my first by this author and i whole heartedly enjoyed it 😊
I really enjoyed One Look by Harlow James. It is such a sweet, heartfelt love story. I love when an author has the ability to create characters that you can easily relate to. I was able to feel the love between the characters and the heartbreaking moments as well. If you love sport romance stories this is one you should definitely pick up
This book was SO amazing! Harlow James outdid herself! Jake + Dani are serious goals! I love a good sports romance + this one hit the spot + more! I’m still reeling with the emotions from finishing this book. Ya’ll please pick this book up! You won’t regret it. It’s one of the best I have read this year!
I loved this book. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Dani and Jake. They were a perfect storybook couple one look and bam fireworks go off and feelings start reeling in.
This is a book filled with emotions, love, chemistry and passion a love story filled with emotions.
Baseball and love at first sight. Two of my favorite things. This book had great characters with electronic chemistry. Dani and Jake were perfect for each other. Even when fate threw a curve ball, you were still rooting for them. The secondary characters were an additional bonus source of entertainment. I hope for the chance to read Rocky's story soon!
A beautiful slow burn read! I love sports romance so I was super excited to start this one and I was not disappointed! I finished this book in 1.5 days! I couldn’t put it down! One Look will hook you, then shatter your heart, and then turn your world upside down. Harlow James once again with a home run 🧡
This was such a sweet read one I do definitely recommend!!! All it took was one look into the stands and Jake was hooked on Dani. Without a doubt they had hot as hell chemistry and it sizzled between the pages. I loved this beautiful sports romance!!! 5/5 for Dani and Jake!⠀
