Short Version: This is yet another entry in the very popular (some, including me, might say too popular) "BDSM" shifter sub-genre. If you like those books, you will probably enjoy this as it's well-written and -edited; Maddie is a strong, mature, intelligent character (though she does have unprotected sex with a man she's just met; please don't try this at home, folks); Finn cares deeply for her, respects her intelligence, and doesn't try to change her; and the sex and spanking scenes are well-described and not as harsh as some (for my caveat to this, see below).

I particularly appreciated that Finn didn't rape her, forcibly "turn" her, or forcibly impregnate her as happens in other shifter books. In terms of the last, the book acknowledges something that has often bothered me about "forced birth" texts: that the men who kidnap women to coerce them into bearing their children never think about the emotional, psychological, and physical toll that pregnancy and childbirth can take (including death). This book recognizes this danger -- illustrating it with a specific example from Finn's past -- and I gave it a half star just for this.

Side note: I also liked (as a history and literature buff myself) the many references to medieval Scottish texts, which is this author's day job. (FYI: It's really not kosher to criticize students like this, even in a fictional book; and no professor could simply disappear in the middle of the semester like this without arranging for someone to take her classes.)

Long Version:While I liked Maddie and some aspects of Finn, I still had mixed feelings about him. In addition, this book contained my pet peeves about this genre. To be more specific:

1) The H spanks the h unfairly for being terrified of him. Ms. Daniels is yet another in a long, long, long list of authors whose heroes punish their women for very reasonably objecting to being captured, kidnapped, and kept against their will ("How dare you try to escape when I'm trying to carry you off" is pretty much how this goes, and is a very tiring and frustrating trope in this genre).
“Mr. MacDonald? Sir? Master? Your holiness?” With each word, her voice became more shrill. “How exactly should I address the man who bundled me into the back of his car and beat me?” Finn narrowed his eyes. Her assessment of the situation clearly irritated him.
Gee, dude, her "assessment of the situation" is actually quite accurate. What do you expect her to think? And given that you weren't transported to the 21st century from a previous era, why are you surprised?

2) The H expects the h to trust him immediately even though he's done nothing to earn it (see the above part about kidnapping). "He could smell her fear and he didn’t much like it. If she was terrified, it wouldn’t be easy to establish a relationship with her. He suspected it would be more difficult than he’d first thought anyway." Well, dude, think hard now: have you actually done anything NOT to make her afraid of you?

3) Explaining things -- anything -- to these women never occurs to these men. But why bother talking when you can just beat the woman you claim to care for into submission? "For her own safety, he had to ensure she learned that actions had consequences and any rules he set were for her own good." Gosh, I guess she's just supposed to read your mind?

4) The H expects the h to tell him everything, yet he tells her nothing. While Finn later realizes this was a mistake, he never apologizes for it, even though by withholding valuable information, he placed her in danger. In fact, like most h's, Maddie just pouts for a few days and then gives in. I would just once like to see an H in these books really work for an h's forgiveness.

5) The H expects the h to appreciate the fact that he's kidnapped, spanked, and held her against her will, and gets upset when she doesn't see things from his point of view. I laughed out loud when Finn said this to Maddie: "You're not my prisoner." Actually, dude, she is: you're keeping her in your house against her will; you've taken away her cell phone; you're not allowing her to contact friends and family. If that doesn't mean "prisoner," what exactly is your definition?

On the plus side, the "hero" doesn't encourage anyone to body-shame the heroine (as happened in Tamed by Her Mates); he doesn't turn her into a Stepford wife (Donovan's Rules); he doesn't engage in emotional cruelty by laughing at her and making fun of her fears and concerns (Claiming His Captive); he doesn't sexually assault her (Chosen for the Warrior); and he doesn't nearly execute her (His Conquered Bride). As you can see, my bar for this particular author is very low.

Finally, if you like this book, that is absolutely your prerogative, but please don't call this "BDSM." The BDSM community prides itself on practices that are either Safe, Sane, Consensual (SSC) or Risk-Aware Consensual Kink (RACK). Note that both terms include "consensual." When there's no consent (negotiations, limits, safewords) then there's no BDSM, and to so label a book such as this only stigmatizes a lifestyle that is already very misunderstood. If there's anything that you love that you would hate to see described erroneously, please keep that in mind when using the term "BDSM," either for this or other books that do not include explicit consent.

2 1/2 stars. I would have rated this more highly if Finn hadn't said this: “If they do, you’ll sit there and say nothing. You’re mine, Maddie, and if I want to show off your gorgeous body, I will. In fact, if I want to fuck you senseless in front of Ross and a dozen other men, you will allow me to do so without complaint.” Sorry, public humiliation isn't my jam. YMMV.

ETA: I agree with another reviewer that the nightmares are triggers, confusing, and deeply unpleasant.

OMG I almost DNF. the story is actually decent but the whole submission and breaking the h, humiliate her, treat her like a pet and cane her...it's just not my thing. No judgement, if this floats your boat then this is a nice short shifter story with a dominant alpha and his destined to be mate.

Quick Summary
Finn is a wolf shifter and alpha of his dwindling pack. After seeing college professor, Maddie, and her unique amber eyes, he’s convinced she is a breeder (a genetically compatible human that can bare shifter babies) and that she is his destined mate.

When she’s targeted by a group that call themselves the Knights of St. Francis, Finn kidnaps Maddie and takes her to the one place he knows he can keep her safe. His family estate.

Isolated, confused and scared are just a few of the emotions that bombard the heroine as she tries to come to terms with her unexplainable pull towards Finn and tries to decipher his strange behavior and obsession with wolves. And the all consuming question? What does it all have to do with her?

🖤 ~ My Thoughts ~ 🖤
Finn surprised me with his determination to not push Maddie too fast or too hard. He tried to understand things from her point of view and you don’t see that a lot in these types of books. I appreciated that he didn’t so easily disregard her feelings. I just wish he'd followed through with being understanding of her distrust and worked harder to gain her affection.

Did I wish he would have discussed things with her more thoroughly? Yes, he was way too vague about the real danger she was in and the truth about his wolf half. Almost like he wanted her to solve the mystery with very few clues given.

I also wish he would have shown Maddie, with his actions that he really cared about her (and not just as a breeder!) but whenever an opportunity came up for him to really connect with her, he went all my-way-or-a-spanking and punished her and/or had sex with her. There was no middle ground for him. There also wasn’t a lot of aftercare or really any tender moments between them which I think would have definitely help them connect on an emotional level.

Maddie on the other hand confused me a lot of the time. One minute she’s scared and panicking, the next she’s so aroused she forgets all her fears? Once I can buy but every intimate scene between her and Finn starts off like this without any deeper feelings or attraction developing. She sent a lot of mixed signals and had me questioning her real feelings since both her actions and inner dialogue stayed the same from beginning to end. On top of that, her nightmares were a huge turn off.

As an erotica read, this one was okay (if her kink was explained better?) As a romance this just didn’t have enough emotional growth, both MCs pretty much stay the same. The only one to make any kind of concessions was Maddie and her about face came too suddenly to be believable.

Long story short, the story had potential and I loved the history and family legend bit about the lady with the amber eyes, and the author’s take on shifters was cool but the MCs needed more fleshing out to convince me they loved each other and weren’t just together for convenience's sake. (Maddie as an ideal breeder for Finn and Finn a kinky sex partner for Maddie).

Heat Level: This was a 3/5
(Excluding the nightmares, because that rated a 0)
The only time these two have any kind of chemistry is in the bedroom and that was limited because half the time, Maddie is being punished and/or humiliated leading up to it. That's not my jam so it did effect my overall rating.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I couldn’t finished. This book was terrible.
Maddie is a professor and expert in medieval poetry. While giving a lecture she finds a stranger in the back of the auditorium and she felt “something”. Later she met him in a very improbable situation and spite she witnessed he opened a door breaking the hinges she goes to drink coffee with a perfect stranger in the middle of the night and after a disturbing experience. So when obviously she doesn’t accept to go to his house because she just met him he gags her and ties her hands and throws her to the floor of the backseat of his car and when she shows her fear, he punishes her and beats her. I really can’t really understand how Maddie could be terrified but aroused because a bully kidnapped her and later “spanks” her because according to him she misbehaved. From there she really lost it. I don’t get why authors portray strong, independent and intelligent women that in a matter of couple of minutes become brainless because of lust. I don’t understand either why they have to degrade women and humiliate them by make them crawl or beg for a sexual situation she is not even sure wants to endure. I like dark stories but I believe there’s a limit. And it’s not because it was too dark but because he never explained the situation. They never had an agreement or put boundaries or safe words so in my eyes he forced himself on her and that doesn’t mean she willingly submitted to him. Even the nightmares were disturbing. When I read the synopsis of this book and Ross’ I thought I would read them both but after she came back to him and instead of receiving her showing he saw her more than a “breeder” he instructs her how to wait for him to punish her I stopped. No more. Enough is enough

This was my first book by Ms. Daniels, and I enjoyed "The Alpha's Mark" to want to investigate more of her books for reading. The story concerns the last alpha of a line of prominent wolves who has finally found a woman who carries the right abnormality that makes her a suitable mate. It isn't until they meet that he discovers that she is his true mate. At the same time, a group of werewolf hunters have also located this woman forcing the alpha's hand, making him kidnap her to keep her safe. Now, not only does he have to "woo" her to become his mate, but he also has to get her over her fear of dogs before he can divulge his wolven heritage. I did find that the storyline dragged a bit here and there, which is why I couldn't give it five stars; however, it still kept my interest.

No no no didn’t really like it that much!

Yea I really didn’t like Finn & his rules & his punishment for no reason at all. All because Maddie is his mate & she needed to do whatever he said since he knows best. That’s just BULL💩 . He kidnapped Maddie & took her to his castle & pretty much rape her. Regardless of how the writer wrote that he told her he will f*** in the arse, Maddie didn’t want to do it & he pretty much told her he was not asking permission. I didn’t like it & don’t & won’t read the rest of the serie. I tried reading the 3rd book with the sister & Sadie- couldn’t take it... it was just like this one.
Nope don’t like it one bit!

Knowledge is power

The author kept me glued to the edge of my seat with this one! I love the characters, they each have their own agenda and you can feel the way they interconnect and the undercurrents of their relationships as the story progresses. With each turn of the page I was more invested in the HEA, and I just about cried when I thought it was not going to happen. But the author didn’t let me down and made the ending one that I will remember. The storyline is fantastic, and the author really whet my appetite for the next book. I can’t wait to read it!

How far would you go if you had found your mate??? then found out she was in danger???
Fin MacDonald is the last alpha of his bloodline and has so much on his shoulders. When he hears of the amber eyed beauty who could safe his bloodline he just knew she was met to be his mate. But college professor Maddie MacKinnon had no idea about there world. And he wasn't sure how she would take it.
But when Maddie is attacked at the college he takes matters into his own hands and kidnaps her and takes her back to his mansion.

From the very beginning, i was cheering for a happy outcome for Maddie and
Finn. This shifter story, set in Scotland, was very easy to read. Its full of emotions,
secrets,danger,desire and finally acceptance.

Findlay McDonald is the last alpha in his pack and he needs a special mate to
have his children. He found his mate in Maddie MacKinnon, but she is unaware
of his intentions or the danger she is in.Maddie lectures in medieval Scottish
text and she is the key to unlocking the mysteries of the past.Fate brought
them together and he must keep her safe.Maddie instincts were on high alert
when Finn attended her lectures. She felt pulled towards him but had no idea
that he would change her life forever. After Finn saves her from certain death,
he takes her to his home to decipher the manuscripts that hold the key to
the future.

Maddie fights Finn's dominance at every turn putting herself in danger. She soon
learns that he will not hesitation to punish her.She loves his hint of darkness but
is conflicted by her feelings.

I loved that Maddie was a strong and independent woman in her own right but she
was no match for Finn. The storyline flowed well at a steady pace. The plot includes
elements of BDSM and spankings. The author created anticipation that kept my
interest from the first page.

★ A steamy and suspenseful story ★

—>>> Dr. Madeline MacKinnon represented absolutely everything Alpha Finn MacDonald of Glenlogie Lodge had been searching for over the past years, despairing that he would be the last of his pack’s bloodline. She is a key to the past and the future. Seeing for himself her intellect, beauty, and ability to translate his family’s medieval manuscripts depicting a prophesy sealed the deal, and he set out to claim her, one way or another. Only it seems he is not the only one interested in her, and soon Finn has his work cut out to decipher the generations-old information and to convince Maddy to stay right where he and his pack can protect her. For this human female, Maddy gets a crash course in how essential she is to Finn, as well as how much the Old Scots words spell out a whole new startling reality for her, not just folklore. A steamy and suspenseful story! Looking forward to reading Ross and Lisa’s story in the future as well!

I've read other SD novels and I must say, I really enjoyed this one. It had a nice place to it and though I've read plots similar to this, it was just different enough to stay interesting. I liked that though the MMC was all Alpha, here wasn't dominating in such a way that the FMC was totally submissive to him. Her character has that feistiness to her. The author was able to remain true to her dynamic despite some situations that required her to bend to the MMC. Overall, a fun read

Good read

Finn means to make Maddie his mate no matter what. None will stand in his way, especially not her. Having to protect her from shifter hunters only makes him more resolute. What's a girl to do? Really liked the story but did not like how Maddie basically showed belly to Finn and didn't put up more of a fight. Another supposedly strong female bending to a big brute. Onward to see if Lisa's made of stronger stuff.

Maddie is a professor and Finn is the man who is going to be her mate. I really enjoyed this story. Even though Finn is dominant, he enjoys Maddie's independence and spirit. He doesn't want to change her, just curb her somewhat. The spankings were sexy and I'm hoping we get to read about Ross and Lisa's story. Interesting

Finn and Maddie are quite the pair. Maddie is a doctor's of Ancient Studies. Finn is the Alpha of his pack. The setting in the Scottish Highlands adds an air of mystery. The secondary characters are also very important. This couple ( Finn and Maddie) 💑 is unique.

An enjoyable read. Finn was a little frustrating at times because of his refusal to share with Maddie. But it worked out in the end. The secondary characters were really interesting also. Hoping to see their stories.

Very interesting

Well developed story and very appealing characters. Old fashioned spankings and a alpha who likes having things his way. A college professor who is independent and sassy. They meet when he kidnaps her, claiming she is his mate. Nice read and great ending.

Great blend of BDSM and mates

This book contains a little BDSM starring a dominant alpha. It is a short novel and a pretty quick read so don’t expect a lot of background. The characters are realistically flawed and the novel definitely held my attention and was a great read.
