A necromancer and a hungry ghoul walk into a graveyard.

Lazarus Kerrigan just wants to pay his rent on time and to keep his new business afloat. Unfortunately, the good citizens of New Orleans aren’t eager to fork over their hard-earned cash to the city's only openly practicing necromancer.

His only client so far? The mysterious ghoul king, Serkan. He wants Lazarus to hunt down a rogue ghoul prowling the streets. Easy enough, until the ghoul turns out to be something far more ancient and dangerous.

To save the city and get paid, Lazarus will have to stop the monster in less than thirty-six hours, a monster that can neither be killed nor bargained with. With time and options running out, Lazarus is starting to wish he’d never taken the job at all…

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

I enjoyed this book totally, from end to end. It can be favourably compared to other urban fantasy books about a lone, male, magic wielding, somewhat broke, charming, rough around the edges kind of person. No names mentioned...

The main character is the only openly practicing necromancer in New Orleans who is hired by one monster to find another monster but things aren’t as straightforward was that. Good story setting and progression, nice character development. Enjoyed the “boss fight”. All in all a great introduction to the series. I will be following this one.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write a review.

Lazarus is hired by a ghoul to find another ghoul who attacked a woman in his territory. Lazarus has only been out of prison for two years (the story tells us he completed his 18-month probation and then opened his shop 6 months ago). We don’t get any of the other characters here aside from Paula and the ghoul king Serkan. I was surprised we didn’t get Nate. I don’t recall how the met, but this would have been a good time for it. This story was a download the author offered years ago. I do not know if she still does, but it is a book all lovers of Laz should have. I am surprised it is free since it is almost long enough to be considered novel length. She really should consider putting it up for purchase.

This book serves as a wonderful introduction to a great world with complex characters, interesting situations, and a wonderfully snarky hero. Even if you have read other books in the series it still gives you some background information that it is fun to have.

The story starts off with the likes of a cheesy line from a bad joke. " A ghoul walks into my office " - and maintains that type of dark humour throughout the book.

Dealing with a demon is heavy work and if you add in a very young girl and a crotchety fae landlady, you've got the base for an interesting read.

The main chararacter has a set of morals that he won't compromise on - even though his jail experience would certainly make it seem justified.

Maybe I'm just a softee for a magic wielding felon with a dark sense of humour and integrity.

Death Wish is an enjoyable read - I'll will continue onto the next book in the series, and look forward to seeing what trouble befalls our reluctant hero.

Excellent read for fans of Jim Butcher! A down on his luck wizard, running his own business, money worries, finds a ghoul. It gets better from there. There's action, magic, and protecting the innocent.

Death Wish - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Author E.A Copen really knows her supernatural stuff and keeps proving it over and over again, as with the excellent Death Match, #5 in the ever-better Lazarus Codex series.

This time our hapless, (open your mouth and insert both feet up to the ankles) hero seems to be really in the you-know-what, when he ends up being coerced by Emma's Dad, Morningstar into taking part as a contestant, in a tournament seemingly organised by the gods themselves, to 'graciously' grant the right to nominate the new replacement for the late Horseman, Famine] to the victor of a bloody, no-holds-barred tournament.
Can Laz survive to have an HEA with his would-be lady-love, Emma? Or do the gods, Fate - and Morningstar - have other ideas?

Read Death Match, by the incredibly talented E.A.Copen to find the winner of this far-from-ordinary 'Celebrity Death Match' like no other before or since!
