The Tudor Court #2

The Queen's Rebel: Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex

Rate this book
Elizabeth Tudor faces the most dangerous threat of her reign...

Who will prevail, queen or noble? The old generation or the new?

The Rebel Earl: Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex (The Tudor Court, Book 2) is a revealing portrait of a man convinced he was born to rule but whose character flaws led him to the executioner's block instead. A must-read for Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir fans.

When Robert Devereux arrives at court, he catches the eye of the ageing Queen Elizabeth I. Grief-stricken after the death of her favourite, the Earl of Leicester, Robert spies an opportunity to step into his shoes. But unlike his predecessor, Robert is not prepared to have Elizabeth dangle favours before him only to snatch them away again. His eyes are on a much bigger prize, that of the throne itself.

But Elizabeth is not willing to relinquish her power, so Robert has to fight for what he believes should be his.

There are no prizes for coming second at the Tudor court.

This fight is to the death!

Intense reading!!

I chose five stars because this was the most interesting book I've read about Devereux in a long time. Several minute facts were left out, but all in all, I found it to be as accurate history as can be without being there. Ms. Sierra imbued each character with emotions that made me feel along with them.

It was truly enlightening to become Devereux, to feel his, well, ego and madness evolve, from a loving child to a tormented and vain adult. The people who surrounded him and who were involved in his plotting became just as real as the people alive today.

The comparisons between them and now that I see fit well with the adage that history tends to repeat itself, over and over. I believe, with the way Ms. Sierra writes about Essex, that he was a narcissist, one who believed that anything that went wrong with his life was not his fault. But, others around him knew reality and were bright enough to know just where the fault belonged.

Elizabeth I is portrayed as a charitable queen, too charitable at times, and possibly led to Essex's downfall. She let him believe he was more favoured than many others, he came to expect rewards for even outrageous behaviour. But, towards the end, she was more....vindictive and harsh in her treatment of him, turning the boyish love into bitter hatred.

This is a very good book, one I think I will include in my permanent collection, as well as her first book, about her one true but forbidden love, Robert Dudley. That book was intense and very interesting as well. I'm looking forward to more historical fiction books from Ms. Dowers in the future. I highly recommend this book and the first to anyone who is curious about Elizabeth's life, love and the effects they had in England.

From Favorite to Rebel, Young Life Not Spared!

I never realized how the Queen could be swayed by her advisers so easily! How one minute she held one in her favor wanting them at her "beck an call" and the next send them off to war (or possibly or death) so quickly! Good book but not as good as the first in this series.

Earl of Essex

I have read this book and giving my honest review.
A new author and what a book. I could not put this down. Even though I know the history it was well written. You become part of the story, every turn and wishing the outcome was different.
Not spoiling I hope you enjoy as much as I did

It’s always interesting reading fiction that focuses on Elizabeth in the latter part of her reign and what she may have been like, rather than the young girl and woman so many people often focus on. Nice light read.

This is the first book that I have read by Laura Dowers and it will certainly not be the last. Absolutely loved it! Despite being a little lost on the first few pages due to not reading 'The Queen's Favourite' first, this didn't distract from a very enjoyable read. I rarely write a synopsis, as I never like spoiling for others. This is one book that I didn't want to come to an end! Recommended.

I would like to thank Laura Dowers for sending me an e-copy of 'The Rebel Earl' in exchange for an honest review.
