The Internet of Money #3

The Internet of Money Volume Three: A collection of talks by Andreas M. Antonopoulos

Rate this book
While many books explain the ‘how’ of Bitcoin, The Internet of Money series delves into the ‘why’ of Bitcoin. Following the world-wide success of Volume One and Volume Two, this third installment contains 12 of his most inspiring and thought-provoking talks over the past two years, including:

Universal Access to Basic Finance,
Measuring Success: Price or Principle
Escaping the Global Banking Cartel
Libre Not Libra
Unstoppable Code: The Difference Between Can’t and Won’t
and many more.

Around the world, governments and corporations are increasingly pursuing a reconstruction of money as a system-of-control and surveillance machine. Despite the emergence of an interconnected global society and economy through the decades-long expansion of the internet, the trajectory of these bureaucratic policies foreshadows dire consequences for financial inclusion and independence.

Andreas contextualizes the significance of Bitcoin and open blockchains amid these socio-political and economic shifts: What if money could be created without an authority? Are corporate coins the first step towards techno neo-feudalism? Is the real “darknet” run by state intelligence agencies? What if everyone could have a Swiss bank in their pocket? Can we build digital communities resistant to gentrification?

In 2013, Andreas M. Antonopoulos started publicly speaking about Bitcoin and quickly became one of the world's most sought-after speakers in the industry. He has delivered dozens of unique TED-style talks in venues ranging from the Henry Ford Museum to booked-out meetups in the Czech Republic and Argentina.

In 2014, Antonopoulos authored the groundbreaking book, Mastering Bitcoin (O’Reilly Media), widely considered to be the best technical guide ever written about the technology. On 7 September 2016, Andreas launched his second book, The Internet of Money Volume One, on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast (the interview has since been viewed more than 300,000 times). The Internet of Money offered something that was desperately needed: an explanation of the philosophy, economics, politics, and poetics behind this technology.

Make this book part of your collection and see why the internet of money will continue to transform the world and the internet itself.

Internet of Money book series has been my go-to book series to understand on a general level what is happening around the blockchain technology and the movement.

As a series I highly recommend in the same way: best source I've found to learn about precisely about this technology and what is going around it.

After reading few years back the volumes 1,2, I've been following more closely the technology and writing in online sources as well.

What I learned about this book was about the differences in interest for the technology in for example countries such as Argentina, Venezuela, where the fiat currency has had trouble in comparison to western powers such as U.S. and EU countries. Banking is not accessible to all of the world's population and will not be in the current centralized form. Therefore blockchain is indeed peoples' technology.

Leafcutter ant metaphor in the end of the book was very interesting and it seems exciting possibility.

" The important characteristics of open public blockchains have nothing to do with money. They have a lot to do with decentralizing trust; it's about creating open environments that are borderless, global, and can create opportunities for people to engage in commerce without restrictions. It's about changing the architecture of one of the fundamental technologies we have in society — money. "

As we are progressing more and more into the digital age, a totalitarian surveillance state seems more and more likely to happen. With tech giants having access to our browsing and physical data, and banks and other financial institutions having access to our spending data; how much freedom/privacy do we really have?

Bitcoin allows us to be our own bank and bypass financial surveillance, in an honest way. Want to know how? Read this book!

Antonopoulos is well informed, as usual, if a bit sanguine on the supposed uncensorability of the internet itself (and subsequently there is no discussion here of the implications of control over internet infrastructure for public blockchain systems, etc.) There was some interesting content in many of these talks, and the editing felt a bit cleaner than the earlier volumes. A good non-technical read, and his O'Reilly books remain among the best on the topic.

The book itself is not bad, but considering it's a 3rd volume of the series it did not bring enough new topics and knowledge compared to the other 2 volumes.

First two volumes in this series are much better and thought provoking. This one is much less so and veers too often into ranting.

This is basically just a book that ran out of steam by volume three. The first one and maybe second were a bit more foundational, and maybe there was a time when this book was important. But for me that time is past. AA was basically a BTC prophet when there were none, and I suspect (b/c it was before my time) that a certain crowd hung on his every word.

But ultimately, what comes out in this one is that his views and aspirations were just a little collegiate. He’s not exactly the guy chanting take down the state/corp while sipping his Starbucks with his apple laptop, but that’s only b/c he discovers stereotypes a little quicker (and flees). He’s just a little too in love with celebrating weirdness (and making sure you know) in a world where the Larry Finks have arrived and it’s time to build. Maybe he’s selling his BTC in protest but not too high and mighty to take back all that fiat.

Just finished reading this amazing set of talks delivered by the expert himself. It’s amazing how Andrea binds the technology behind crypto currency with real life implications of the technology. His perspective on the topics covered exhibit thorough understanding and make the book worth its weight in bitcoin(pun intended).
It’s important one understands the technology behind the concept and not just look at it as a form of money making endeavor. Sure the traditionalists will scoff at a technology that gives the control back to people but hey, that is also why it will become a favorite with those who are in the favour of decentralization and de-regulation of our money. If you’re new to the field, consider this book as a worthy starting point. Thoroughly enjoyed and learned.

This book had fewer new interesting ideas as the first two in the series--and a lot more of his social/political commentary that has nothing to do with bitcoin/blockhain/etc. So I found it much less profound, as he is clearly less educated and insightful about cultural trends and morality. His few nuggets of new things on bitcoin and/or blockchain were brilliant, so it wasn't a total waste. But I think he's scraping the barrel for content, having used up most of the good stuff in the first two books.

It was a huge joy for me to learn Mr. Antonopoulos's way of thinking and philosophy. Grateful for sharing his thoughts on the world of money in such a great trilogy of "The Internet of Money" books. I would say this 3rd part is like a combination of thoughts and theses of the previous 2 books. But still nice.

Andreas (Bitcoin Jesus) is one of the most persuasive and compelling Bitcoin speakers. This book (like the others in the internet of money series) is a series of talks given by Andreas over the years and there’s plenty to learn from here, especially for beginners, but really for anyone.

Highly recommended if you’re trying to learn more about Bitcoin or Ethereum.

As always with Andreas his books, gets me interested again in everything behind Bitcoin. There is more to this than just making money.

I would recommend these books to everyone with some interest in crypto. Andreas really is a good spokesperson for crypto.

Recommended by the crypto course I'm currently doing on Platzi. I really liked how this book is made up of 14 talks the author has given, and you can read them in any order. A really great book that can easily be picked up and put down.

Not sure why we needed 3

Still good stories but overall not sure why we needed 3. Wish there was more to these books when I spent money on them.

This more is more focussed on world economies and how Bitcoin can change the dynamics in a good way. It gets a bit technical in some places but the author has managed to explain the terminologies clearly. This book also contains the author's Canadian Senate Testimony session as a bonus.

Not a great follow-up book to the series. Usually, I take away a few nuggets from Andreas's IoM series, but this should have been left undone.
