Spellcaster Tezza Macias hasn't seen her special forces husband in two years and 119 days when a new man is assigned as her partner...a younger man. An awkward man. Tezza Macias, the Grand Duchess's night security, is too tough to admit that the disappearance of her husband is breaking her. Guaranteeing Abbie's safety matters more than anything to her, but as depression creeps in, she's losing her connection with the magic that makes her excel at her job. Her new partner isn't making things easier with his probing, personal questions about things she'd rather not talk about. Sam Simonson only took this job as a favor to one of his best friends, Edward, who also happens to be king. Despite the recent notoriety he gained on a dangerous mission, he doesn't make friends with women--he doesn't even make eye contact if he can help it. Being assigned with Macias, the most intimidating woman he's ever met, poses a small problem. Falling in love with her poses a huge problem. When a magical apparition stalks the palace halls, they'll need the talents they both bring to the job to find out who's casting it and what their intentions might be...before it's too late. Fiona West is an American author living in the Pacific Northwest. Writing romance is her favorite thing, followed closely by reading, knitting and drinking tea while looking out the window. When she’s not doing those things, she’s spending time with her husband and two kids. Her debut novel, The Ex-Princess, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and was named one of their Best Books of 2019. Could Be Something Good, the first book in her new Timber Falls small-town romance series, is out now. This novella in the Borderline Chronicles series is one of my personal favorites. (I had the pleasure of beta-reading this one, too.) Sam is on the spectrum and Tezza has spent a long time unsure whether her missing husband is dead or alive. Tezza is tough and Sam is sweet, and I really liked seeing the interactions between these two. There's also more magic in this one than in some of the other books in this series, because Tezza is a magic-user.
Recommended if you want a quick read with an unconventional, cinnamon roll hero and a touch of magic with your romance :-).
Sam and Tezza begin as coworkers: both the strong, silent type, standing mute for hours next to each other as royal security guards. As time passes, they are irresistably drawn to each other... but there's a catch: she's technically married, but her husband has been missing for years. As the couple fights their mutual attraction, the plot thickens when we learn Sam has sensory issues. Can these characters, who fight their internal battles by building mental fortresses, learn to lower their walls enough to let someone else in? If so, how will they navigate an intimate relationship when Sam can't handle certain kinds of touch or noise? And what about Tezza's husband? In The Almost-Widow, Fiona West weaves an intriguing story that questions what it means to be strong and what it means to be vulnerable, how to grieve and how to overcome obstacles to love someone in the way that they need to be loved. A heartrending tale with characters that have depth and complexity, this was a wonderful read that I highly recommend.
