This novella in the Borderline Chronicles series is one of my personal favorites. (I had the pleasure of beta-reading this one, too.) Sam is on the spectrum and Tezza has spent a long time unsure whether her missing husband is dead or alive. Tezza is tough and Sam is sweet, and I really liked seeing the interactions between these two. There's also more magic in this one than in some of the other books in this series, because Tezza is a magic-user.

Recommended if you want a quick read with an unconventional, cinnamon roll hero and a touch of magic with your romance :-).

Sam and Tezza begin as coworkers: both the strong, silent type, standing mute for hours next to each other as royal security guards. As time passes, they are irresistably drawn to each other... but there's a catch: she's technically married, but her husband has been missing for years. As the couple fights their mutual attraction, the plot thickens when we learn Sam has sensory issues. Can these characters, who fight their internal battles by building mental fortresses, learn to lower their walls enough to let someone else in? If so, how will they navigate an intimate relationship when Sam can't handle certain kinds of touch or noise? And what about Tezza's husband? In The Almost-Widow, Fiona West weaves an intriguing story that questions what it means to be strong and what it means to be vulnerable, how to grieve and how to overcome obstacles to love someone in the way that they need to be loved. A heartrending tale with characters that have depth and complexity, this was a wonderful read that I highly recommend.
