BACK TO SCHOOL A letter for Rudeus arrives out of the blue, bearing an invitation to enroll at the Ranoa University of Magic. The admissions exam is a cakewalk, but once Rudeus is accepted, a far less straightforward challenge awaits him—getting to know his eccentric new classmates!
On a little spoiler-ish note But it’s really not plot related and won’t detract from the read. I promise Or just skip ahead to my mom-spoilers praise after “*******”
*******
Turns out the Sylphie chapters really were a gimmick. They start with her waking up, going running and then go to the prince’s chamber and waking up Fitz sleeping in the other room....with a sword by his side.... was that perhaps just a typo??? Where he intended to write Luke???
No no, but then when Fitz mentions and takes the princess entourage through a shortcut. There is actually a comment by a Fitz something akin to “nice work”
So you’re left wondering is Fitz played by 2 persons? An attendant and Sylphie? Sylphie doing the magic and the attendant being present when Sylphie is off duty. Would have been totally cool, and they make you feel that way.
The fact that she got up and came up to Fitz in the morning in the first chapter wasn’t a double, it was just meh writing where the author wanted to show you... something. Intrigue you in some Ooooh look she doesn’t see herself as Sylphiette or a person when she’s in public guiding as fitz.
*sigh, I can understand what he was trying to do. Or maybe I was expecting too much.
It was just gimmick. A badly written one at that
Damn. But I liked this book lol!
Anyway, I would have been more forgiving, thinking that there might really been a reason to it. There must be right???
But I’m a quarter through the next book now and.... yeah disappointed.
Also the fact that a significant death of family members is just remarked upon and moved on. Felt... unfulfilling
But that maybe because sylphie feels like such a sympathetic character that you want to know how she fared, how she really felt.
*******
Which actually leads to the strong point since Sylphiette as a character really is fun to read
All else in the novel was good
Rudeus and Sylphiette’s interaction are some of the most heartfelt moments in this series and I enjoy them a lot. And sylphie’s POV does solve one of my previous gripes about other characters sounding just like rudeus. She is resoundedly Sylphiette in her thinking. Still a little too naive. And despite Paul’s intention to make both of them more independent. It feels like she has lacked that development. Maybe this will be addressed in the next book. But if it isn’t, then that’s a little let down. All in all, a genuine budding relationship where the characters just simply grow to like each other!? There’s to hoping it stays that way lol.
Have already started the next volume so Stay tuned I guess lol
I got really into Mushoku Tensei earlier this year and read the first seven books in quick succession. One reason for it was that I wasn't really looking forward to the upcoming school arc. Having picked up the series again I can report that it isn't that much of a school arc, more just a school setting. That might not make much sense unless you have already read the book, but Rudeus get accepted under somewhat peculiar circumstance as a “special student”, meaning he doesn't have to attend class and is free to spend his time in the library, and given what type of series this is, do some fighting.
Well, good thing he's not part of Dead End anymore, so he can have buy as many kid slaves and kidnap and (attempt to) rape as many teenage girls as he wants. Good guy Rudy.
Also the sudden switch from fantasy and adventure to generic Japanese high school is bullshit.
The main character is a terrible person, but this reads as a redemption story. You get to go on a journey with a weird creepy dude that is starting his life over and trying (sometimes failing) to stop from slipping into his old habits. The story is set in a world with magic and skills. There is plenty of sexual references and terrible internalized monologuing, but the actions of the MC are his attempt at redemption and thank goodness there are no actually graphically detailed scenes in the audio. Guessing by this having been released as a manga/graphic novel or whatever the correct word is for this type of asian comic book, I will absolutely not be interested in the visual imagery.
Oh, I’m getting closer to unknown territory and I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see what I’m the story after the last I saw from the anime. But as far as the books go, I’m really impressed by the little snipets from other characters. It has brought more dimension to the story and I’m loving all of it.

This novel, albeit not that important plot-wise compared to book 7, still has a certain amount of charm as it sets up the university arc pretty well. I also like how Rudy's Erectile dysfunction serves as a clever way for the author to develop Rudy's character away from his more perverted pre-book 6 self. However, the only gripes I have with the book are that I can't believe that Rudy can't recognize Fitz's true identity, I know that it's been like 8 years, but still, Rudy can't be this dumb not to pick on the not-so-subtle hints Fitz keeps dropping. Nonetheless I still really enjoyed this book, so it's a 4/5 for me.
Chapter 3: First Day of School, page 95 It was more a method of classification than one of discrimination; the school had probably reasoned that if the human nobility ate alongside the adventurers and demon folk, it would only fan the fires of potential conflict. The school had probably reasoned that if the human nobility ate alongside the adventurers and demon folk, it would only fan the fires of potential conflict.
Someone did a bad job editing/ proofreading, duplicate text.
Rudeus is invited to and attends the magic university. As a special student he has a lot of freedom to pursue research that he is interested in. Bullies appear and eventually meet the wrath of the Quagmire. Sylphie appears but is shy to reveal herself to Rudeus. I like the action, humor, and tentative romance. I look forward to the next book.
Out-of-this-world world build and character development. The character building is interesting and you grow to like the characters. You get to know the characters so well, you can well predict what they're thinking and how they'll react, it's a great feeling. The magic is fun, and while the MC is over-powered, it doesn't break the weak-to-strong development too much.
I love this series! Getting harder to wait for the next one to come out. I continue to be fascinated by the implications of Rudeus's strength. He is super powerful, but that doesn't guarantee him anything if the situation isn't geared to his skill set.
I fell like the revelation of sylphy is been dragged on. No explanation as to why sylphy won’t tell Rudy and why Rudy can’t make the connection. I also don’t understand why Luke won’t tell Rudy they are related.
This whole magic university arc is straight up a dumbed down Kingkiller Chronicles reliving. It's nowhere as riveting as Rudy is practically Jesus, but a nice ride nonetheless. Getting tidbits of lore on a larger scale and perhaps finally moving into something more grandiose.
Things improved for Rudeus: he started attending a school for magic, made friends, and increased his renown. The horrors of slavery were downplayed. The chapters from Sylphiette were not well done since she's obviously Fitz.
Juliet need a future too! Under the blessed ones protection, may she grow to be sponsored craft woman Great follow up starting to tie up all the loose ends
