Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Light Novel #4

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear (Light Novel) Vol. 4

Rate this book
A bouncy light novel series about a girl transported to her favorite video game world with her magical bearsuit equipped--and don't miss the adorable manga version, also published by Seven Seas! (Anime coming soon!)

Fifteen-year-old Yuna prefers staying home and obsessively playing her favorite VRMMO game to doing anything else, including going to school. When a strange new update gives her a one-of-a-kind bear outfit that comes with overpowered abilities, Yuna is torn: the outfit is unbearably cute, but too embarrassing to wear in-game. But then she suddenly finds herself transported into the world of the game, facing down monsters and magic for real, and the bear suit becomes the best weapon she has!

This series is terribly formulaic. That being said, I greatly respect how the author has created a rich world with a bevy of characters without losing narrative focus. The story is 99% devoted to Yuna, but does provide occasional side stories for other characters. The balance is perfect.

Did not enjoy a lot about this book:
1. So much child labor. Basically orphaned children 12 and under working jobs that are exhausting and stressful even for adults. Unnecessarily as well, on so many fronts.
2. The language/writing style on this one is more annoying than in previous volumes: too many cliches, sayings, etc. that are obviously not translated from Japanese - very American teenager or American senior citizen or regional slang etc. is used at times. It’s jarring to read something from the point of view of a 15 year old Japanese girl that reads like a 65-75 year old American man. I do understand that some phrases and sayings just don’t translate and that the people working on the localizations do the best they can to find an accurate equivalent, but there are so many it is jarring and very awkward at times. Yuna’s voice/actions also come across as sort of psychotic at times as well.
3. Some things are played off as humor and they’re just not funny.
4. Yuna also seems to have lost some brain cells and skills since her adventures in the first novel. There are so many instances of her not immediately grasping simple concepts and there are almost as many where she makes mistakes that volume 1 or 2 Yuna probably wouldn’t.
5. Editing; some things seem to be out of order - like saying you got in the car, but then opened the door AFTER so you could get in… when you’re already in the car - but where a whole scene or chapter seems out of place.

Bear gets a bakery/pizzeria/fast-food joint and fights a squid.

This volume is very well translated. It reads beautifully, the jokes land well, the action is well described.

What I found interesting was that the story diverged more from the anime adaptation in this volume (obviously, the anime diverged from the book). Some of this was, I think, done to cut characters from the anime, thus reducing costs so the money could go elsewhere. Once again, some of Yuna's more violent tendencies were toned down or hidden in the anime. There was one entirely original joke in the anime (regarding day-drinking, black tea, and lack of sleep) which I was relishing only to be disappointed.

As far as comparison to the anime is concerned, this book covers all but the last episode, and that had a 'last episode of the series' feel about it suggesting that it was largely original, but I guess I'll find out in volume 5.

After the massive capitol city arc, the series dials things back for a smaller-scale low-key installment that I think is my favorite so far. Yuna opens a bakery and the description put into the love and personal satisfaction from opening it is great. She takes a lot of pride from not only creating something but helping people find jobs and it's a good arc. The second half of the volume sees her adventures in a small fishing village besieged by a giant kraken and also political turmoil which introduces some fun characters and locations as well.

Read in Japanese and this being my sixth full novel finished in Japanese it was the easiest so far, looking forward to seeing how I do with the rest!

This was on par with the first three- a fluffy read. Someone pointed out the kids working and it is a tad odd, but I feel like Yuna is doing her best to work within the frame work of this world, where kids who are not nobel work. As she says, if they need jobs she'll keep them safe. The second half has some action and introduces a new town and more flavors of home for Yuna too. She is growing and becoming more friendly throughout these books, which I am enjoying.

I adores this volume! We see how Yuna gets into more chaos and fights! Loved Atola, and the Bear's lounge! I'd love to eat there! This volume was really fun and fresh to read! Loving the illustrations as usual. Can't wait to read more about Yuna's adventures!

Another great installment in the series. I cannot wait to continue on to read the next editions. This series has become my comfort read. I'll start the next book in the series after finishing my review of this book. I love the series and highly recommend it if you like video games or dnd.

Yuna starts a business then goes on a quest for fish. One of the few times we see her even vaguely homesick....

We have two parts here, one about starting the new business and one about a trip to the sea that becomes a village-saving adventure. Both are pretty good and fun!

4 stars (paperback)

Another fun adventure with Yuna OP-ing to strive off boredom and then later for food haha. Some of the best lols are during the Kraken arc where the townspeople are moved by Yuna fighting the Kraken for what they thought was their safety but in reality she just wanted rice.

Overall, another light amusing read :J
