Did it wrap up a bit quickly and neatly? Yes. Do I desperately want a sequel? Also yes. But this series is a stand-out for the way that it handles the issues of being queer in the late Victorian era, its references to 19th century queer literature, and its unerring sense of its own beating heart.

It's go time! Lord Edward finally states his intentions toward Alice in a way that she can't back away from. He knows that Hanako and Alice are in love, and understandably isn't thrilled that Alice's affections are already spoken for. All he needs to do is get Hanako out of the picture. This will be the final test of our couple's determination! Is death Alice's only escape from a loveless marriage?

My only serious complaint with this volume of Garden is that Edward never came across as being seriously in love with Alice. If he wept buckets over her like Hanako did, I'd have been more convinced. As romantic impediments go, he was barely a speed bump.

This series went by lightning-fast. Three volumes, and we're done. The author's afterword states they'd like to tell more stories about Hanako and Alice, or some of the side characters. This cast could easily support a number of interleaving stories, similar to romance novel series in English.

Well, at least the series was consistent to the end -- underwhelming as it overflows muchly with angst, fretting, and ultimatums. A couple of side characters want to steal the show, but are left with little to do amongst all the swooning and crying of the main characters.

This was a nice volume, the ending was a bit rushed and didn’t show any of them being happy together, but at least it didn’t end terribly with denial.

Alice and Hanako have been separated. Their reunion is fraught with emotion, but the cold shadow of Lord Edward still looms large in the background. He has no illusions about Alice’s feelings, but that’s no obstacle to him. With society against them, what hope do Alice and Hanako have?

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the answer to that question is “not much”. Goodbye, My Rose Garden started with a most unsettling request and that rears its ugly head again this volume, as Lord Edward acts like a man obsessed. He is a perfect ‘boo hiss’ villain for this book.

The romance that’s been building has been quite lovely - Alice and Hanako make a terrific pair and their shared love of books (and each other) only solidifies after Alice’s revelation at the beginning of this volume. The sumptuous artwork, always a highlight, is perfectly on point for these two.

The slow twists of the knife as the two try everything they possibly can to stay near one another and are constantly thwarted build and build, making this a tense read going into the denouement. This book knows how to make you feel miserable for its characters.

Then the ending happens.

There were basically three ways this book could have ended - tragically, cannily, or preposterously. Sadly it goes for the third option and, while it is a perfectly fine ending, it loses SO much of the series’ strengths on the way.

When I reviewed volume 2, I said there was a lot to unpack. That was, unbeknownst to me, a lie - all that luggage got left in the overhead compartments and was whisked off to another destination.

So much symbolism and all the talk of death, just... sigh. I get it, with the cocoon analogy and rebirth and blah blah, but it feels like the cheapest possible interpretation of all that. Again, it’s not bad, but it could be much better.

The dramatic climax is TOO dramatic - Alice and Hanako wouldn’t be able to be together in many places today, so it’s hard to believe Alice does what she does and doesn’t get stoned to death before she can blink (an exaggeration, but you can’t tell me there wouldn’t be repercussions).

Don’t get me wrong - I appreciated the references to women’s suffrage and all, but this went from a period piece (Victorian romance.) to more of a comma (Victorian romance, with modern sensibilities). I truly think there was a way to have the cake and eat it too here, which is why it felt like such a let-down, even as I somewhat enjoyed it.

Four stars. I’m not going to begrudge the ending more than I have and this series certainly had goodwill to spare from the first two parts. I just think there’s a better ending buried in this one. But hey, the rare three volume series that didn’t utterly implode at the end.

Це була неймовірно чудова історія. Коротко, мило і емоційно. З радістю почитала б про їхні подальші пригоди

Over all a nice story.
Wonderful art.
Interesting art too haha how they had really small frames all the characters 😅
Anyway I thought the ending felt a bit too easy and too anticlimactic actually.
My angsty heart would probably preferred a bit, even more, bittersweet ending than I got but oh well.
In a way it’s also a nonsensical ending as well because it’s gonna be a hard life for them. In a world that loathes them. More or less for whomever they love. And Lady Alice just went up and exited the wedding and put all her family in disgrace but hey she got her girl right… but likely there will be difficult times ahead… I’m just saying…

But like I said. Over all a nice story. I loved the historical setting and the themes of forbidden love.
And all the love for the written word that Lady Alice & Hanako shared. And of course the love they had for each other, which truly beat throughout the pages.

The whole series is a weak 4/5 rating for me. I was, like I said, not overly thrilled by how things ended. But it’s a solid & shortish read. With much heart. Only three volumes. Good number - all good things are three, so to speak 👌

Dr. Pepperco, your words are magical! This was such a beautiful story. Exactly the kind of thing I look for with queer stories. The writing and art are both so wonderful. My only gripe with it is that I want more! I’d love to see what happens after the ending and a separate story about Suzanne and Marie.

3☆ Review:

Am I crazy for saying that I wish the ending had been more tragic? This whole series has felt like a lead up to a sad/bittersweet ending, but instead it ended like that? I love a happy ending and it still could have been done, but in a different way. I feel like this ending was far too rushed.

But as a whole, this is a really good series!

I'm all for happy endings but this was just too unbelievable to be enjoyable. The same overall outcome () could have been achieved in a less dramatic and reputation-destroying manner. Also, I don't think the author realized how expensive and difficult it was to travel, especially for a single woman with no connections to ensure safety. Saving money on a year maid's pay would not exactly allow to "travel the world to learn".

I want to thank this series for combining all the tropes I find very compelling and beautiful. The art, and the way the words flow matched the beauty of this manga. This is something I’ll treasure forever. I’ll be thinking of this lovely story countless times and may circumstances remind me of the feeling this story gave me through the small things in life.

A wonderful conclusion to a lovely story. While 'Goodbye, My Rose Garden' is somewhat simple as a story, as it's only three volumes, it was a really nice read. Definitely recommend this trilogy to anyone interested in a soft yuri/lesbian manga. There are some trigger warnings so make sure to check those before checking these out though!
One more chorus for the beautiful art in this series, it's truly just so beautiful. Especially the wedding dress you can see on the cover, it's just... so beautiful. I liked a lot of the characters in this series, and it's amazing how much individuality and personality each character had in the minimal time we spent with them. Can't mention it enough, just beautiful :D

2.8!

this volume was better than the last two imo. (the book titled “goodbye, my rose garden” :,)) except,,,well the ending felt rather rushed. but at least we got a happy ending (?) ^^ tbh i thought they would reunite many years later and we would see them be together in their olden age (or like alice would fake her death like a comment mentioned which,,,is a good idea tbh). ok series overall :). (tho im interested in what will become of marie x suzanna. their dynamic was cute.)

The ending was nice, but I wish they had added an epilogue or a bonus chapter. I also wish there had been more slice of life scenes throughout to show how strong Alice's and Hanako's bond was rather than the drama either pushing them together or tearing them apart. That being said, this was a solid yuri series from beginning to end.

The conclusion felt very rushed to me, like there was more of the story to be told. That being said, the entire series is contained within 3 manga. The tale was short and sweet, and I'm glad I picked it up.

very cute but felt the ending was a bit rushed and would have enjoyed the aftermath. especially because the author seemed to really care about historical accuracy it would have been nice to see the issues the girls would have faced
