My school has a dark secret... ...but the one in my past might be darker.
When the cheerleaders mentioned an initiation, I thought they were joking.
Hours later, I've somehow left two football players unconscious and I'm escaping my first Varsity party with the scariest guy in school.
In one night, I went from popular to pariah.
From knowing who I was to confusion about my past.
Nothing feels safe anymore, except these students who call themselves The Select. Right now, they are the only people I can trust-- even if they aren’t telling me everything about The Select or its elite academy.
The further down the rabbit hole I go, the more sure I am that I won't be coming back.
Who can I trust if even my own memories aren’t telling the truth?
The only thing that Sullivan Gray loves more than writing is reading. And maybe coffee. She writes in a variety of YA genres. In addition to the Blakemore Paranormal Academy series, she is the author of Pariah, the first in a contemporary YA spy series. When not writing, she's helping her husband wrangle their five kids and hosting the Create If Writing Podcast under her other name, Kirsten Oliphant.
Gray reels the reader in and then suddenly you find yourself completely hooked! I didn't want this book to end, it left me considering the what might be coming next.
Pariah had a fresh, new, original plot with masterful world building and a marvelous but dark plot.
I can't wait to see where Sullivan Gray takes us next.
My Rating: 5 stars Written by: Sullivan Gray Print Length: 206 pages Publication Date: September 17, 2019 Genre: Teen | YA | Fantasy
Taya lost her memory at age ten because of an accident that she can't remember. She's in high school and goes to a party where she's told by some of the other cheerleaders that she has to go in the closet with a couple of high school boys as part of an initiation. I really didn't think it would be that big a deal, until it was. This book got dark, fast. It got really dark because Taya was almost raped but another boy comes to her rescue and gets her out of the party and back to his place where she meets his mother who actually works at their high school.
But after meeting the mother and some of the other kids who come to his house, she's left with more questions than answers. There's a kind of club that they all belong to and the mother tries to invite her to it. It's all very secretive so they don't hang out at school which messes with Taya's head a little bit. But when those boys from the closet come back and try and get revenge on her for getting away, the members of the club come to her rescue time and time again. The fact that nothing is really done to stop the bully boys from making her life hell at this school had me shaking my head. The fact that Taya doesn't tell her parents what went on even though they are suspicious and are mad at her for staying out all night was just irritating.
The story kept me reading because I was waiting for the bullies to get theirs but then this story takes a really weird turn and gets even darker. Lies, secrets and more are kind of partially revealed at the end of the story but all that did was leave more questions unanswered and we don't really get a real ending. Everything is left wide open which I hate. This really could have been a great read if we were given a real ending.
This YA urban fantasy / paranormal romance is just awesome! With a great storyline it’s full of Darkness, mystery, intrigue, magic and drama and is quite intense but oh so so addictive, And I am anxious to read the next book.
“The movies have it wrong. Being totally isolated and cut off from people isn’t the worst thing. Being completely alone while you’re surrounded by people is the worst thing.”
When eighteen year old Taisiyah attends a Varsity Party at Hastings High, she has no idea how much her life is about to change. Pressured into participating in an initiation by two cheerleaders, Taya is horrified to find herself in a closet with three boys who attempt to assault her. Calling on a strength she never knew she had, Taya incapacitates two of the boys and finds herself on the run with the scariest guy in school, Sutton Anderson. Sutton’s mother happens to be the school’s Guidance Counsellor and allows Taya to spend the night to recover from her ordeal.
The following morning, Taya returns home to see police patrol cars parked outside her home as well as the two disingenuous cheerleaders responsible for setting her up. Intimidated by their presence, Taya omits to tell her parents about her ordeal or where she spent the night which causes friction between them. On returning to school, Taya finds herself not only ostracised by fellow students, but the victim of a campaign to demoralise and browbeat her by the cheerleaders. Terrified of a repeat attack from the three culprits who assaulted her and with no where to turn, Taya finds aid from an unexpected group known as The Select.
Pariah is the first instalment of The Magic Unveiling series and is a prequel series to the Supernatural Reform School series. It’s also my first introduction to the author and boy was I in for a special treat. The book was compelling, fast paced with lots of mystery, twists and suspense which made it a truly engaging read and hard to put down.
While the plot is complex and intriguing, the strength of the book lies in the appealing three dimensional characters created by the author. Each character was well rounded, believable and unique. Taya is a smart, appealing and relatable protagonist who the reader won’t help rooting for.
When a book leaves a reader with so many conflicted emotions, it is a testament to their writing and characterisation skills and the author has this in abundance. Rarely have I felt such a plethora of emotions in one book. I felt like I’d been on an emotional rollercoaster by the end. Taya’s pain and loneliness was palpable and I found myself genuinely welling up at times as she struggled to keep a brave face. Her relationship with Sutton, Church, Darius and Kamani was a joy to read. Their group dynamic made me laugh out loud at times and cry at others. I loved the affection between Taya and Sutton. I suspect that there is more of a connection between them than they realise. I especially loved the chemistry with Taya and Church and the way he referred to her as ‘princess’
Judging from the explosive and very revealing epilogue, we are in for an unique and complex trilogy. I shall be waiting with abated breath for the follow up. :)
◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
The book is definitely very powerful due to the events that are happening. There's an attempt of rape, not very graphic but enough details to give you shivers down your spine and make you understand the trauma behind it, even if the action wasn't finished. Only the attempt is enough to shook you to your core.
The book enraged me, mostly because these things are events happening all around us, the bullying, the rape, the fact that someone can become a pariah when she doesn't fit into the pattern, the race, and the hate. Things all around us and most of the time as in the book there's very few people who trust you and tries to help you, or even tries to understand you, the rest are people who won't understand, or they'll pretend is alright.
Taya is the type of girl that the events in her life are either breaking her or making her, and she's the one who doesn't let the events around her break her. She's courageous, strong, and fearless, even tho due to trauma she has moments where she freezes and needs to pick herself back up.
It's an amazing story, with a lot of realism into it and amazing scenario that keeps you on your toes wanting for more, the story doesn't let time for interpretation of what's going to happen next, its this intense that I've devoured it quickly more than I've expected. This book contains impactful events, such as rape attempts and bullying. The rape attempt isn't finished or very descriptive but it's enough detailed to make you feel what she felt.
Even tho the events are of a more different nature than what I've expected, it didn't discourage me to read it, on the contrary, I loved it. It's an amazing story, but it can be triggering.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review so here it is.
This book is a little on the darker side and leaves you with more than enough unanswered questions that you will just have to get the next book as soon as it's available!
Taya is left feeling vulnerable and lonely after a disastrous evening at a party, returning to school to find that she's got no friends and no-one to talk to except the teachers. She finds herself in the middle of an odd group of 'Not friends' that shes curious to find out more about and maybe even become part of the odd bunch herself.
Who are these people really? Read the book to find out more! It's a great read and a great start to what promises to be a great series!
This book just blew me away. Taya is a typical high school girl who just wants to maybe have friends, get to know her crush and then on night everything changes forever. Who can she trust, who are her friends and what do people really hide behind the faces they present to the world? I really want to know more about all of the secrets that are floating around, not only in her school but also in her own home. When you start reading this book, you will not be able to put it down
This book was an awesome read. It was absolutely amazing. I love the main character but she need to believe in herself a little more. I absolutely adore Church and Sutton 😍 and the rest of the gang . I can’t wait for the next book in this series!!!!!
[NOTE: In order to avoid so-called spoilers, this review speaks in very general terms. I hope that I still make sense.] At first I felt annoyed with myself because I don’t enjoy books about the highschool clique and their bullying. I should have expected the setting, as I did read the blurb that led me to buy the book. But I think I expected from that that whatever happened after “the closet” would move Taya out of the high school environment. Later I felt annoyed at the “house party” because the move from abuse by schoolmates to welcome and acceptance by a random “family” seems cliché and not fully believable.
I tired of excessive repetition . How many times does Taya have to remind us that she lost her memory at ten, that the counselors have warned her she might have difficulty forming relationships, or that she crushes uncontrollably around boys that I don’t even understand her attraction to? I realize this story is geared to teens, not to adults who have read a gazillion books. Nevertheless I find the extent of the repetition annoying at best.
The story improved for me with the revelation of a secret other world behind the normal one. Having something bigger than just the school group made me more interested. The slightly clumsy attempt to bring in issues of race relations is also a plus. When Taya starts considering the basic nature of all groups and our tendency to ignore situations that arise outside our own groups—even when we directly witness the situations, at that point I like the book a lot. Sadly, the story does not remain in the lofty heights of social philosophy but quickly jumps back to the highschool bullies.
Then at the end of the book, we get another shift, a very dark one that has more to do with the adults than the children. This is thrown in as the surprise-shift ending, which leaves everything up in the air and unresolved. The way this is presented interests me, but mostly disappoints me. Partly, I don’t generally like “Luke, I am your Father” endings. Give me a little more closure please. But also, I just don’t like having a new point of view introduced and then leaving that character in despair. Weirdly, I could probably handle leaving someone in mortal danger, but I don’t like leaving them in pain.
This book will probably be most enjoyed by 14-17 year-olds who love computer challenges and/or art combined with characters who are somehow “super-powered.”
What an incredible written book that sucks you in as soon as you start to read it….. there is initiations, mysterious happenings, high school bullies, secret groups, secrecies all around… ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Taya was in a car accident, she has no childhood memories before 10 because of a head injury. She hasn't made any close friends because she feels different. She was a spectacular gymnast prior to the accident and because of this it has made her an assist as a high school varsity cheerleader but, betrayal awaits her by her supposed friends that set her up.
There are so many secrets all around her.. She is not sure who to trust… Did I mention that I love this author Sullivan Gray? I started reading this book, after the other 2 series I finished reading from her and before I knew it- I only had 30 pages to go only because I fell asleep while reading on my iPad kindle, lol 😂..
Definitely recommend this book can’t wait to read book 2 in the series after writing this review, even though it’s 2:15 am lol 😂
This book had me hooked and not wanting to put down! It leaves you with just enough unanswered questions that have you needing the next book.
Taya seems like the average teenage cheerleader, but after a disastrous evening at a party, her life seems to change completely.
After she is saved from a party from her so called friends, Sutton, Church, Darius and Kimani seem like the just the people she can trust even if they are an odd group friends.
With secrets and questions unanswered will Taya belong with this odd group and will she find who these people really are.
Pariah ends with a twist and an a hint of a secret that doesn’t seem possible. I’m looking forward to finding out. It is a fast paced- page turner that truely appeals to those who love fantasy!
Pariah (The Magic Unveiling Book 1) by Sullivan Gray is such an amazing story that I have read. This is book number one in this amazing start to a brand new series that I have loved reading and can not wait to read the rest of this amazing series. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about urban fantasy and paranormal romances.
I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
I wasn’t sure what type of book I was in the mood for until I read this. It was a lot heavier than I was expecting with a lot of threat to rape and abuse/bullying. I’m still surprisingly hooked and plan to start the next book right away.
This was a great intro into a new word with characters you love, and characters you absolutely loathe. I have so many questions now, and I can’t wait to find out more in the next book.
***This book depicts several potential rape situations that may be traumatic for some readers***
I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but after reading that this was the beginning of a prequel series to Blakemore Academy, I expected more supernatural excitement and less natural fear (if not terror). It was darker than I expected & a little depressing.
I did find myself immediately drawn in and immersed all the way to the end. And I'm eager to find out more, but I hope it isn't this dark all the way through, or I may not be able to finish it.
I did really appreciate the ending (before the epilogue, which despite being named so, was actually a sneak peek). Sometimes rules do indeed need to be broken. Kids have committed suicide for far less.
So it was a good story, but it left me feeling kind of down, and I need to go find a romantic comedy now.
*Clean romance level/Parental warning: not a lot of romance, but as mentioned there are several threatened rape scenes. While nothing sexually graphic is described, the threatening situations were still really hard for me as an adult to read - discretion is strongly advised with your teens
ONE ELECTRIFYING ADVENTURE!!! Holy crap! Sullivan nails this baby 100% on point realism with amazing scenario's that blast dead center with such intensity that unfolds this bad boy spectacularly. Unnerving events with staggering impacts that blows this baby wide open. A heart stopping tale that hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. The drama, uncertainty, intrigue and suspense make for one exciting experience. Twists and turns abound with startling revelations that thrusts this bad boy to life beautifully. A swirling eddy of stunning mishaps and vexing circumstances that blasts those stormy, twirling emotions bursting to life. Drawing you in so deep until nothing else exists. The characters are authentic and relatable with on point personalities that bend and flow. The scenes are vividly descriptive in the realistic true to life form. Fantastic job Sullivan, thanks for sharing this awesome gem with us.
Definitely a great read! Going back in time before "Supernatural Reform Academy" and learning everything that happened before the school was brought to life! Emotional, heartbreaking and very fascinating!
“My school has a dark secret… ...but the one in my past might be darker.” This is the line that hooked me. I was so intrigued I had to check out this story; and it was great! It is unique and different and the author really knows how to get a reader involved in the story and the characters.
I loved the plot of this story and think that the author did an amazing job of introducing in-depth characters with a hint of darkness. I am a sucker for Elite stories and this one excelled at mystery and secrets! I couldn’t help but turn the pages as the story unfolded, I kept guessing at what was next and I have so many questions (the good kind)!! I am going to need book two, and soon! I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review. 4.5 stars.
A wild and crazy rollercoaster of emotions!!! 😫😳🤪🤯 OMG this book blew me away!!!... It's so intense, you can actually feel all of Taya's emotions as your own... It will hook you up since chapter one, even tough is really dark, you need to know everything is going to be fine, so you keep reading 😩😢... Amazing story line and wonderful characters, their new friends are the best!!! 😍🤗... Can't wait to know what will happen, what really is behind her memory lost, OMG, I need the next book NOW!!! 🤓❤️
Taya is a high school student that just wants to be friends. She’s a cheerleader and her friends invited her to a party that was a set up for her to be attacked. A boy from school helps her get away but when they get to his house she’s shocked again. There is a Select group that isn’t really friends but she finds herself getting pulled to them. She finds out that their are things in her past she doesn’t know about. Will she find out what and will whatever is going on pull her in? I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This novel really hits home. There are news stories about schoolyard bullying but people like me generally think of big kids shaking down little kids for pocket change. The kind of bullying that Taya undergoes is not something that usually crosses my radar, and yet it should. The storyline and the characters are so realistic, so raw that I feel the need to jump in. This novel has a message that everyone needs to receive, not just the young adults.
I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a message.
OMG....this book hooked me from beginning to end. What started out as a normal evening turned tragic, and now Taya has only the Select to help her unravel what’s going on. This book will literally pull you in, and make you feel so many different feelings. This book was an excellent start to a series, I’m more than willing to read. I’m addicted to it now. No way to go but onward! Sullivan, great job!
I thought Pariah was a great start to this prequel series! Taya is such a likeable and intelligent character. It can be hard enough coming into your own without being shunned by all the people you thought were your friends. The suspense over what the in-crowd will do next keeps you turning the page. I want to know more about the select, how Taya lost her memory, and what she feels brewing inside her.
I read the first 2 books in the Blakemore Paranormal Reform Academy series(waiting for 3rd to be released) before reading Pariah and at this point there isn't much crossover or details to compare. I am looking forward to continuing both series and seeing how the 2 series show what that world is like. Plus I believe Blakemore coauthor is releasing a series in this world too.
This is a huge emotional ride. Triggers may include attempted sexual assault, hazing, bullying, and claustrophobia (hey, it's a big deal for some of us 😉). That being said, I appreciate how all these situations are portrayed. I love when emotional situations are written so well that you feel the anxiety with the characters. This was not what I was expecting as far as a prequel to the Supernatural Reform School series. But I love it all the same.
