A little over 15 months after receiving the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS BOX SET, I finally removed the shrink wrap and read the 14 volumes in a marathon eight-day read from the very first JLA/JSA crossover through the HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE and background material.
There are stories I would have added (FLASH #123 and #137, CAPTAIN CARROT AND HIS AMAZING ZOO CREW! #14 and #15) and some I would have left out (some of the stories were more "red sky" issues than actually dealing with the Crisis itself), but overall it's a nice set to have collected in hardcover. I do wish, however, that the collected hardcovers in the box set had been in the oversized Deluxe Edition format.

When I picked this up, I had some pretty high hopes for this collection. I was expecting some of it would be cheesy and nostalgic. I already knew how good the core story, Crisis on Infinite Earths was and the idea of having ALL the “crisis” material together in one box set was quite exciting and enticing. Unfortunately, other than the core story, this is rather disappointing. Most of the crossover material is pretty bad, there a few really nice bits, but overall it is all pretty lackluster. Even the old and “classic” pre-crisis stuff didn’t live up to my hopes or expectations. So yeah, I was pretty disappointed with this box set. It is a nice package and nicely designed, but the material included in the volumes is pretty unimpressive. I am giving the set an extra star just for the inclusion of the 12-issue masterpiece by Wolfman and Pérez.

Me confundí: esta es la reseña a la que más tags le escribí, y no es para menos si se trata de una de las épicas más grandes jamás realizadas en el noveno arte (y probablemente en otros también).
Megaobra ochentosa con trabajos de Marv Wolfman, George Pérez, Dick Giordano, Jerry Ordway, Alan Moore, Robert Kanigher, Robert Greenberger, Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Todd McFarlane, Gardner Francis Fox, Mike Sekowsky, Dick Dillin, Dennis O'Neil, Gerry Conway, Mike Friedrich, Elliot S. Maggin, Gary Cohan, Lou Mogin, Adrian Gonzales, Kurt Busiek, Joe Giella, Chuck Patton, Alan Kupperberg, Mark Waid, Mindy Newell, Steve Englehart, Len Wein, Martin Pasko, Stephen R. Bissette, Sid Greene y más.
It’s the most audacious idea a comic book publisher has ever attempted. It really doesn’t work; a great comic transcends its time and this one is very much a product of a particular time.
But I have to hand it to DC for swinging for the fences. At best, it’s a stand up double, but you have to respect the ambition. And the packeting is fantastic: it’s beautiful. I can’t imagine reading this again but it I can’t bear the idea of selling it.
