I have recently read the Harappa series by Vineet Bajpai. I was completely fascinated by his writing style. He got placed in my favorite Indian author. Just like Amish Tripathi or Ashwin Sanghi Vineet has brought a gripping tale in and around Hindu Mythology & other conspiracy theories. When I first saw the cover release of Masaan, a thought occurred to me how a Mythology-action style would blend in historical action. But the job was nicely done.

The story started with the mysterious death of Tipu Sultan and curse related to his treasure. Then it switched to Mastaan and his troops. Working under the East India Company's infantry, Mastaan was a hero of his region. Known as Bandookbaaz, Mastaan was true to the name given, can alone take down a gang of thugs easily. He was loyal to company Bahadur (East India Company) till he came face-to-face with atrocities of the company done on India. Things became bitter when his cousin Mangal Pandey was hung for revolting against his senior. But at the same time, Fay, the sister of his superior took his heart. How would he maintain his revolt along with his love life? What was the relation of Mastaan's story with Tipu's treasure & its curse? Do read to know these facts.

The good parts of the book
1) Gripping storytelling
2) Focus on storyline & characters
3) Wonderful linking of historical events
4) Easy language usage
5) Good for any age group
6) Nice cover

I have to wait for the next part though, that's the only sad part.

** What to expect? **

Expect a historical fiction that centers around the 1857 First War of Indian Independence. Expect a book that offers you high octane action, replete with romance and drama. Expect a book that is entertaining and fast-paced. Finally, expect a book that can be read and enjoyed by all categories of readers.

** The story as it goes **

As the brutalities and monstrosities of the East India company reach their peak, there are voices of dissent rising from all across the Indian sub-continent. The imperial giant continues to ignore the warning signs, but all around, kingdoms, small and big, are plotting a major overthrow.
There is rebellion in the air, and this makeshift army of rebels, troops, warriors, and revolutionaries are headed towards the once glorious capital of Hindustan, Delhi.
Between all this chaos, there is love and friendship, loyalty and betrayal, at the center of which is the unforgettable story of the indomitable Mastaan.

** Who can read? **

The book is written in a language that is simple yet polished at the same time. The ease of reading combined with fast-paced narration makes it an ideal read for any category of readers – beginners, intermediate, and voracious.

** Jumbled timelines and multiple subplots **

One of the best things about Mastaan: The Fallen Patriot of Delhi is that it makes use of multiple timelines and multiple subplots. Many things are happening simultaneously, and many characters have their own stories to tell. There are also seemingly unrelated events that happened way back in the past but are now somehow connected to the present. This jumbling of timelines and intertwining of the fates of various characters add immensely to the entertainment quotient.

** An ambient read **

Another big plus that Vineet manages to pull off as an author is the right atmosphere. Whether it is getting the historical relevance right or the vivid details that add texture to the novel, Vineet does all of it with élan.

** Many snippets from history **

It is the snippets from history that not just add authenticity to the novel, but also make it more vibrant and realistic. The readers would frequently find themselves in the company of many historic figures like Lord William Bentick, Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, the savage brigands called Thugees, legendary revolutionary Mangal Pandey, the unforgettable queen Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi, the immortal shayar Mirza Ghalib, and many others.

** An impressive cast of characters **

The characters are undoubtedly one of the best things about the book. The protagonists as well as the antagonists are magnanimous and larger than life. Their personalities, overwhelming and daunting. Their descriptions paving the way for obligatory reverence.

** What could have been better? **

Though romance is an integral part of the book, its execution oscillates more towards embellishment as opposed to substance. This sometimes leaves the reader wanting for more, making some parts appear hasty and unrealistic. The overall effect is that of a ready-for-Bollywood script that focuses on delivering the packaged combo of both romance and action.

** Wholesome entertainment **

While as a reader I’d rather side with single-themed reads, there is no doubt that in Mastaan: The Fallen Patriot of Delhi, one would find entertainment of all sorts. Many genres intermingle to provide wholesome entertainment - historical fiction, romance, drama, comedy, and dollops of action.

** Final verdict **

Don’t miss it!

Whenever we heard of 1857 first war of independence in India, one name which comes in our mind is Mangal Pandey but then who is Mastaan ?Mastaan also known as Bandookbaaj is a most loyal soldier in East India company but he is also a brother of Mangal Pandey. After revolt of Mangal Pandey whole India was burning for independence and then what is the role of Mastaan ?
will he chooses his countrymen over loyalty towards company?
you have to read by your own to know more about it.
Mastaan is also an absolute masterpiece, the way of putting all sequence together in a book make this an easy and enthralling read. And mention of Mirza Ghalib and his shaayri in between makes this book more engrossing.
Must read and recommended to everyone.

This is the story of Mastaan who served in British army during 1857 uprising of Indian against East India company. He was a brave soldier known as great 'bandookbaaz', raised by a good British officer when he was orphaned in his childhood. So, he worked in British army pledging his devoted loyality, like an undefeated warrior, along with his lifelong friends subedar Chhagan Pandey and others. The violent Indian mutiny of 1857 against Britisher's East India company-known as 'company bahadur' was just near the corner due to introduction of new gun among soldiers, cartridges of which were notoriously famed to be smeared of cow & pork meat that were refused to be used by Indian soldiers. The very famous historical characters like Tatya tope, Manikarnika or Rani laxmibai & Mangal Pandey who fought & died for freedom of India, made appearance in the story. As I learnt in this book, Mastaan was an older cousin of Mangal Pandey. In all these violent chaos, something happened that changed the course of the history. The great Mastaan fell in love with Fay, the sister of their British officer. The emotion was equally reciprocated strongly. And from then on, Mastaan fought fiercely to protect Fay, as massive British massacre occured everywhere in India. He pledged safety of his loved one. What would would have happened if this little yet significant thing, 'love' had not happened? If Mastaan had not intervened for the love of his life and totally fought with Indians against British,
it quite possibly might have turned the tide of battle against Britishers in favour of Indians and the much coveted freedom might have come decade earlier to India in 1857, is the conjuncture of the story. The story is beautifully interwoven with history of India and in simple interesting way by the author. I enjoyed it Though, at the end the end, it turned out, this one has a 2nd part too named, 1857, the sword of Mastaan. As I want to know, if Fay was saved & what happened to Mastaan,I will have to find this 2nd book now 😄 3 stars for this one.

Full review on my blog:
https://blog.medhaapps.com/2019/12/bo...

The year is 1857 - the year when Hindustani sipahis collectively showed their dissent towards their British lords, as they refused to bite the cartridges supposedly greased with cow and pig fat. When they attempted a mutiny against the oppression, the forced religious conversions, the entire idea of a merchant company slowly turning the locals into slaves and ruthless show of power and might. Mastaan Pandey, cousin of Mangal Pandey, who was serving in the Delhi regiment, was known fondly as Bandookbaaz, and was one of the greatest warriors of his time. Mastaan was conflicted in his loyalty towards the English men versus his Indian brothers, while his close friend Chhagan Dubey was up for this idea of mutiny against the East India Company.

Mastaan's inner turmoil is because he was in deep love with Fay, the young sister of Robert D'Suza, the Commander of their regiment. Mastaan, along with his loyalty towards Robert and unflinching love for Fay is also aware that the English Lords are not going to bow down to this mutiny by a hand full of soldiers and when they attack back, the war will result in blood bath of an entire nation. On the other hand, is the aging Mughal Emperor who is still hopeful of getting a upper hand and hist lost power by resorting to anything - even black magic. On the fateful day when the mutiny spreads through the city of Dilli, what fate awaits Mastaan, his friends and his countrymen form the rest of the story.

The story starts with the falling of Tippu Sultan, and the rise of the East India Company. The story traces the incidents leading to one of the landmark incidents in the history of India's fight for Independence. Since there is a sequel to this book, this one works for establishing the key characters who will take the story forward in the next part. The action sequences, especially those involving Mastaan and his regiment, are described with perfection. For majority of the book, the narration moves back and forth between different scenarios, thus building interest in the reader.

By making the central character of Mastaan fictitious, author takes liberty in character development to make this historical fiction interesting. The cover deserves a special mention as it summarizes the grit of the story. The author also keeps the characters as per the need without adding too many characters and confusing the reader. There are places where the story does slow a bit, as this part is intended to set the context for the next part. The author also succeeds in describing the life and culture in Dilli back in those days, in a lyrical way.

Mastaan stands tall at the center of this impressive story, with all the traits of a believable warrior and super hero. Pick this one to be taken back a few centuries in time and experience the mighty Sepoy Mutiny.

I was quite impressed with Vineet Bajpai's Harappa series. Hence, I picked up the Part 1 of the Mastaan trilogy with a lot of expectations. Glad to say, that it ticks most of the boxes and is a real page turner. Those who adore old-world Delhi, will definitely love this book even more.

It's about time that Indian authors wrote some quality historical fiction novels rather than churning out unimpressive mythological fiction reruns. The author has stayed true to the genre to a large extent by basing the story around established facts(the first war of independence in 1857), though he still provides a supernatural air to it by incorporating dark arts. To be fair to him, they were prevalent in the 19th century.

Nevertheless, it was a promising start to the trilogy. Hoping he builds up on it. The second one has already been published but the final installment will most likely be released in 2022. So, might not be a bad idea to wait and read all 3 together.

3.5/5 (might increase/decrease the rating after reading the entire series)

Somewhere VB has given in to his desire to see his book on big screen while writing it. The language therefore is less a story, more a screenplay. There are also way too many characters introduced in the book and his favourite running theme of supernatural that was heavily present in Kashi too continues here. Most characters are too superficial. Since so many of them had to be introduced not much space was there to do justice to them. So even when something important like killing of Tipu happened, had to turn back pages to see where the characters were introduced. Hero is 'God' was acceptable in Harappa series as he was, but similar character traits continue here, which becomes... well....again too big screen like. As rated ... It was ok

Mastaan-The fallen patriot of Delhi brings to our readers an overwhelming reflection on the incidences of 1857 during the governance of British East India Company.   This book is an ode to the unsung heroes of our indian history. Though there are a lot of instances that remember our freedom fighters, Vineet Bajpai’s Mastaan relives some unanalyzed facets of history and never made it into our history books or documentaries.  It’s a detailed portrayal of the great warrior and how much dependent were the English men on our indian soldiers not because we, back then, were employed by the British but because   Indians were self-qualified to have a respect and  dignity of their own.
There are vast historical relationships that unveil the beauty of a book. Mastaan is believed to be the strongest and most loyal soldier of East India Company. The son of a martyr has inculcated the blood of bravery in the solid man. British have always been talked and taken in a negative perspective through the pages of history. The book has something to offer on every page and you cannot really skip any. Neither would I recommend you to read this book at one sitting. It engulfs your mind and takes you to the era of those times.
There are correlated stories of the great freedom fighters associated with Mastan . The book is fast paced with gripping storytelling and a good reader would surely get lots of chances of guilty reading. As I said the book shows a diverse correlation among many characters, the author merges the scenarios pretty well.  I'm glad the author writes crisp and thankfully there’s no beating around the bush in this book. As the name of the book, Mastaan stands to the central character in both the parts of the book.  This book is supremely researched and only creates grandeur around the book.
Being a fast paced read with numerous characters it might be a little difficult for the first time historical-fiction readers to check on events happening. Read Mastaan- the fallen patriot of Delhi to celebrate the Indian history and to acknowledge the fact that there were thousands of other martyrs  to and fro of the fighters who never came to the history books and pages.

Mastaan - The fallen patriot of Delhi by Vineet Bajpai

Mastaan is a fictional story staged during the time of India's first war for independence. Mastaan is popularly known as bandookbaaz and is a trustworthy comrade of the D'Cruz regiment. The death of Mangal Pandey, his younger cousin has raised the rage against the company and declares the first war for independence. Amidst, a love story is flourishing between the bandookbaaz and the beautiful white lady Fay who is the sister of Robert D'Cruz.

Will he take vengeance for his beloved cousin's death and fight for independence? Or will he betray his motherland to prove his loyalty to the company and for the love of his life?

The story revolves around many characters and their parallel stories leading towards an intense story. Too many characters were a bit chaotic for me. I liked the writing style and the vivid narration of the story. The author's research of true historical events and blending them with this fictional character's story is applaudable. It is a gripping and thrilling read. I had a good time reading this book. The only thing which bothers me is the cliffhanger at the end, too many questions were left unanswered. I think the second book of the series will reveal all the answers.

With a splendid reality of history and a perfect balance of fiction, Mastaan is a beautiful yet thrilling amalgamation of love, friendship, loyalty, rage, patriotism and supernatural activities. I will recommend this book to all historical fiction lovers.

When I first saw the book cover of Mastan it's like speechless the cover itself shows so much about the book like bravery, courage and much more if you are a good observer....
The book is nicely written. The book takes place around 1857 the first revolt of independence. The story started with the mysterious death of Tipu Sultan and related to the treasure and the rise of East India company. Thee East India company started business in India but soon started colonizing in India. The story is all about subedar Mastaan and and British officers... Writing style and cover of the book is absolutely stunning. Love the plotting and situations of the book and ofcourse our courageous fighter or you can say our hero Mastaan....
Give a try to this book...

A good read

I had little high expectation from this book as I have lived through the harappa series and that's one of my most favourite. But this one did make me amazed, I have read a many stories of freedom and have watched a quite handful of movies on the same subject. Though its a nice attempt, it does not stand any closer to harappa series, its just another story of freedom . I am little disappointed, there is no DHAK DHAK THWANG THWANG moments in this book as compared to the harappa series. Being a big fan of author, I will definitely read the next book in the series and will hope that the second book in the series will not disappoint me.

The book as such is written well enough but the whole promise or matketing of the book is a farce.
If the book had been touted as a great love story , it would have been different but the writer used a deceptive sub heading to draw readers in.
At least, I as a reader felt cheated and most probably, will never read him again.

As a person who is always interested in learning more about Indian history, I was intrigued when I read the blurb of this book and I'm glad I picked it up to read. This book focuses on the events of 1857 revolt which was the historical and never to be forgotten moment for Indian history. The author has done a spectacular job in mixing up fiction along with the real incidents of the 1857 revolt.

We all know how East India Company came to India as traders and gradually took over the country and how they treated the Indians. And we have read about the Sepoy mutiny that changed the course of Indian history. This book focuses on one such patriot who altered the fate of Delhi and how his one action changed the course of the war for freedom.

Mastaan who is also called the Bandookbaaz is the Subedar under East India Company and is very loyal to the company. With the uprising revolt, he had to choose between his love for his motherland and his loyalty to the Company along with preventing the bloodshed that is rising in Delhi. And amidst all this is the love story of Mastaan and beautiful Fay.

Whose side will Mastaan choose? Will he be loyal to the company and betray his fellow Indian sepoys? Or will he join the Sepoy Mutiny and end the ruling of East Indian Company in India? Will his one action change the course of the greatest war for freedom? What happens to the love story of Mastaan and Fay?

This is the first book I have read by the author and it totally lived up to my expectations. The writing style is very smooth and even with more than a dozen characters, it was not confusing. The author has done extensive research on Indian history especially the Sepoy mutiny of 1857.

And the characters and the scenes are so brilliantly explained that you can't help but feel mesmerized. I was hooked to this book right fork the beginning till the end. I totally loved this book and can't wait to read the next book in this series. If you are someone who enjoys historical fiction you should definitely read this book.

Hindustan, 1857.

There are various small kingdoms who are striving to maintain their independent or self rule status while the British East India Company was busy capturing each state either strategically or forcefully, killing people and crushing every small revolts.

It was time for the first war for independence or as the world knows it - The Sepoy Mutiny.

It was death of Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment of the British East India Company which was one of the important reason for the revolt of 1857. But this story is not about Mangal Pandey it is the story of his cousin Mastaan, popularly known as Bandookbaaz.

The story opens with mysterious death of Tipu Sultan and a curse. Here, I must warn you it might seem confusing at first because a lot of events take place at different places but all at the same time but give this book some time, it will reveal a dynamic plot. It has gruesome scenes. To balance them there is a subplot of a beautiful love story of Mastan and Fay, sister of his Commander Robert D'Suza. Mastaan knew that the East India Company will not bow down infront of a handful of unorganised soldiers and the revolt will be crushed within no time and the soldiers who protested will be killed mercilessly. What will he choose loyalty towards his country or towards the company? What will be the ultimate fate of Mastaan?

I wish I had discovered the author before. The narration is beautiful with simple scenes and a very good build up. The minute details of lifestyle back in those days of 1850s made the book wholesome. I was happy with the cast of handful of characters otherwise there would have been unnecessary chaos and confusion.( I have remember characters of my other CRs this was a win-win situation).

The story ends in a cliffhanger. But good news is that the sequel is out! Make sure to buy both the books or else you will end up just like me making assumptions until the sequel is delivered to you!

If you like historical fiction jthen pick up this book, I guarantee that you won't regret it.

📚 Book Review

Title : Mastaan
Author : Vineet Bajpai
Language : English
Edition : Paperback
Pages : 290

💫 The British came into India mainly for trade purposes but also had other reasons too. They by the permission of Mughal's set up the East India Company. And from more onwards they started to colonize in India. The main reason was for them to get hold of a territory in India. They carried out their plan secretly as well as wisely and succeeded in capturing some main parts of the country. They built themselves so strong that even mightiest of the rulers of India were unable to challenge them. After getting fed up of the Company's behaviour, the locals started to rebel against the Company and that too from Delhi.

💫 The British ruled over 100 years in India and this book gives us the glimpse about how the Indians were suffering the cruelty and unjust behavior of the British. In the book author had written that "Delhi was the first one to drown in blood. It is the truth that it was the first city to be drowned in blood.

💫 The author of the book is none other than Vineet Bajpai, the most popular and successful author. He has won the hearts of millions with his work. The book is a masterpiece. The writing style of the author is awesome. He has mesmerized me with his work. This is the first time I am reading a book written by him. Never tried any of his books before but now I am definitely going to try his other books too.

💫 I am eagerly waiting for the second part of this book which is to be released soon. I enjoyed it reading a lot I was able to feel the emotions which were written in the book. I had cried too while reading this book. The book cover gives us a glimpse of that time. The title is apt. The language used is simple and lucid. I highly recommend this book.

FAB - BOOK REVIEW OF FAB - BOOK REVIEW OF "Mastaan" by Vineet Bajpai

Genre: Fiction (Historical)

Rating - 4/5

QOTD: A saga that you read which you are so proud of?

''Mastaan: The Fallen Patriot of Delhi " is a very beautifully created saga by Vineet Bajpai. I became a fan of his writing, and I can't wait to read all his other books. This saga just blew my mind from everything to anything about this saga is top-notch. I am eagerly waiting for part 2 of this book because c'mon, when someone is writing so beautifully, how can we miss reading their books? And especially if it is a sequel, there is no chance of missing it, am I right?
.
This book is set in and around the revolt of 1857, when the first fight for independence happened. It all happened when the East India Company came here to trade, then it established their name here in India by making the kings bow down to their works or blackmail them, and later on, they colonized India. Then to get our own rights, the revolts had been started then it first has taken place in Delhi, where it is was utterly became a pool of blood. Then the lover story of Mastaan has begun.
.
This book is based on that incident, but the author has added some fictional elements to it to make it more exciting to read. The narration is impressive and beautifully done. The language is not entirely beginner-friendly, but only average readers pick this book up. Not just because of the language but also based on the plot because, like most of the beginners who are new to this reading world, it won't show much interest to start with historical fiction, so I would recommend average readers to read this book as they will understand the plot entirely and savor the book.

According to S B Chaudhary,First war of Independence it certainly was,as in the whole canvas of the recorded history of India,it would be difficult to find a parallel to this gigantic anti+foreign combine of all classes of people and of many provinces of India. There was never a war in India lasting continuously for more than a year and simultaneously in all the regions which had for its objective the abasement and ejectment of the alien ruling power. This book revolves around the Great Rovalt of 1857.As we all know,it was an obvious product of the character and policies of colonial rule after 1757 and after which noteworthy changes took place in the British policy of ruling over India. The cause of the revolt of 1857,like other earlier uprisings, emerged from all aspects-socio-cultural-economic and political of daily existence of Indian population cutting through all sections and classes.

Storm centres of the revolt where Delhi,Kanpur,Lucknow,Bareilly,Bihar,Faizabad,Jhansi,Bagpat along with the leadership of general Bhakt Khan,Nana Saheb,Begum Hazrat Mahal,Rani Lakshmibai,Kanwar Singh and many others fought bravely.Mastan is a brilliant Subedar of the D'Cruz regiment and he is loyal to the British East India Company, but he soon got a shock of the betrayed. What will happen next?He needs to choose one to come out from his dilemma. His decision is really essential.

You need to read the book to find out the remnant. As we all know Vineet sir is a brilliant writer from his previous "Harappa Trilogy",personality I'm a big fan of that book and this one also doesn't disappoint me at all.His writing style, plot selection, story telling style everything is truly memorizing and it's a great opportunity for us to read the history with his astonishing story.

Just grab a copy of this series and you'll not regret.

The first look at the book and I knew I wanted to read it, The cover is beautiful, loved the colors used and the graphics too.

This book happens to be the 7th book of the author, I haven't read any before this but after this book I really want to read more of this author and the next of this book.

We all know wars have many many unsung hero's and we hardly know about them. This book is on the first war of independence in the year 1857 and it's about a war hero Mastaan, the fallen patriot of Delhi.

The book starts with Subedaar Major Chhagan Dubey and his troops along with their head Robert d Cruz are outnumbered by the Phaadi Ghar who are famous for being notorious and evil. However to their rescue comes Mastaan and saves them.

On the parallel is the story of East India Company on a rampage and is nearly destroying India. Here Mastaan comes into the picture.

However does he help in saving Delhi, that's where he is required to fight against the East India company. Does love play a major role in wars. Does Mastaan knowingly or unknowingly chase the course of history?

Do read this historical fiction to know the entire story and beleive me you will want more from the book.

The book doesn't have the ending as yet and I am so eagerly waiting for the next part.

The book is definitely about patriotism, romance, religion, myths and alot more.

The narrative is very nice, it had me hooked to the book. The pace of the book is good too. It's thrilling also at some places and there are alot of powerful characters and events too.

Language is simple and easy, great from beginners to high level readers.

Highly recommended to all

The book beautifully captures the events which began in the year 1857 - known as The Indian Mutiny or The Sepoy Mutiny or The Great Revolt of 1857. A prolonged period of armed uprising, Enfield Rifles were probably the fuel to the fire. A large scale rebellion broke out mostly in the northern regions of the country as the cartridges of the Enfield Rifles were coated with fat of cows and pigs, thereby hurting the emotional sentiments of sepoys of different practices.

Mastaan has his loyalties tested as he falls for one of the lady closely related to his commander, Robert D'Cruz.

There is a saying that it's easier to stand up against your enemies but much much harder to stand against your own people.

Did Mastaan succed in doing so ?

Does the Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar succeed in his plans of being seen as the The one and Only again ?

What I liked about this book

Easy language
The historical events are put together in an easier manner which makes it easy for a layman too.
Details the fall of the brave warrior and king, Tipu Sultan.
A racy pacy read

What kept me thinking
Mastaan would have probably added more strength to his own side if he had chosen the other side. Indian subcontinent would have seen a new dawn much sooner.
The Great Mutiny proved out to be an unsuccessful rebellion as most of the southern regions showed their support to the British Raj and East India Company resulting in not much unity along the Indian side.
However, the brighter side being the end of The East India Company rule in India. The INC was soon established working towards the freedom which came in almost a century later.

Name- Mastaan: The fallen Patriot of Delhi

Length- 273 pages (paperback)

Cover-4/5
Review:
“Kaun jaa.e Zauq par Dilli ki galliyan chhod kar”
The book starts with the attack on phaansigar by Lieutenant Robert D’Cruze and his Regimant against the Thugs on an icy cold December morning in 1856. Thugs were a community of people who looted, robbed and killed unsuspected travellers, merchants for the money since the 14th century. The regiment was outnumbered by the thugs and D’Cruze promised to die defending his land. Subedaar-Major Chhagan Dubey fought valiantly against the thugs. Chhagan Dubey murmured under his breath while holding off the group of thugs “he must have heard it”. Suddenly with a storm of expertly fired rifle shots entered Mastaan. The Regiment’s very own miracle.
On the other hand the throne of Delhi became weaker as the days passed by. The great and mighty Mughal empire started to dismantle. The wounded Timurid wanted one more chance to prove himself worthy of the throne but it was a shot in brown. Bahadur Shah wass a king with no subjects and no army to defend. And the British government wasn’t making it any easier on the bankrupt monarch.
This is the first book I have read by the author and I must say I am very much intrigued and impressed. The writing style, the use of witty language and especially the shayaris mentioned in book makes it even more insteresting. Mastaan is a very well researched book with loads of information about the situations of Delhi prior to the Great Revolt. The author beautifullyt pens down the story of the unsung faceless heroes of the revolt.

Fabulous Historical Fiction

A historical fiction centered around India's first war of Independence in this first part of the "Mastaan" series by one of India's master storytellers Vineet Bajpai. I have been a staunch follower of the author since the trilogy - Harappa series. Truly this has not been disappointing either. I have been fascinated by the author's writing skills and his creation of visual imagery of the characters, places, and situations. The plot is centered around a warrior by the name of Mastaan aka Bandookbaaz serving in the D'Cruz regiment of the East India Company. He is smitten by his commander's pretty sister Fay, falls in love, and is willing to do anything to protect her. As the uprising of 1857 begins with the hanging of Mangal Pandey, the mutineers march towards Delhi savaging British rulers and their families, This war could be a turning point in India's history towards independence from British rule. Mastaan has to choose between either loyalty to his countrymen in their fight for independence or allegiance towards the company and his lady love. The author has immaculately intertwined this fictional identity with real-life characters of India's history and created this impressive story. Vineet Bajpai's series is best read in quick succession, albeit the sequel always comes with a background of the previous edition, which is one of my reason to delay this for so long. Already into the second book and the plot is thrilling. Must read for all historical fiction enthusiasts.

🗡️ SYNOPSIS: An imperial monster masquerades as a mercantile company. From gunpowder to opium, the East India Company uses every weapon to bring an entire sub-continent to its knees. Even Tipu, the fearsome Tiger of Mysore, falls prey to British military might.

As a century of deceit and cruelty unfolds - the oppressed thirst for retribution.

Delhi is the first to drown in blood, as a violent sepoy uprising engulfs all of Hindustan. The seat of the crumbling Mughal emerges as the epicenter of the ghadar.

An unforgettable poet laments the destruction of his beloved city and a senile Badshah's eyes gleam with unreal hope, as both sides of the Laal Qila witness terrifying bloodshed and historical battles.

🗡️ NOVELTY: I haven't read and heard about the things discussed in the book ( subjective) thus the plot was novel to me.

🗡️ GUESSWORK: This book has discussed about the events happened in the past and thus how those would be unleash and this is something unpredictable.

🗡️ LANGUAGE: I loved lucid language along with apt narration of the book to hold the interest of the reader.

🗡️ FINAL CALL: After listening and seeing the success of the previous novel this book comes to me as an auto pick. After finishing the book I'm glad I did pick up this book. This book has great impact and will take you to time travel in past. Thus I would recommend this book to everyone. This book is first book of the series and now looking for the next book.

BOOK NAME: Mastaan : The Fallen Patriot Of Delhi
AUTHOR: Vineet Bajpai
GENRE: Historical Fiction
FORMAT: Paperback

⚔ History is a never-ending topic. As interesting it is, equally complicated is it's true representation. The reign of the East India Company in our country is still a topic of discussions whenever the history of India is being remembered.

⚔️ I have a thing when it comes to Historical Fiction. Also, I am a fan of writing style of this author, after the Harappa Series.

⚔️ This piece of Fiction revolves around the subedar of East India Company: Mastaan and his love story with Fay, the sister of his british commander. The tension rises among the East India Company people and the fight for Independence begins. What is lost and who loses, is what only time could tell. The year of 1857 is etched in the memory of every Indian and this book tells you a whole lot about it.

⚔️Though the book is a work of Fiction, there are ample of facts for history lovers. The narration and the writing style is brilliant, as always. The introduction of known characters in this work of Fiction like Tipu Sultan, Bahadur Shah Zafar and the great poet, Ghalib keeps you hooked.

⚔️What I got conveyed is that, Mastaan is not just a name of any one person. Every character that took part in the fight for our country is Mastaan and that greatness could never be measured.

⚔️ Definitely recommended to the ones who love to explore Indian History

MY RATING: 4/5

We have read a lot about the prevailing tension between the emperors and the British rulers of colonised India. What lies beneath the freedom struggle of India is a web of controversial and questionable patriotism and loyalty.

Maastan, a loyal personnel of the then East India company, is uncomfortable with the rising tension between the company and it's employees. The author magnificently throws light on several issues and occasions that gradually shape The Great Mutiny. The face off results in a terribly bloodshed all around the city of Delhi with Laal Qila standing in the middle, witnessing the hostilities.

Bahadur Shah Zafar's encounter with the Dervish and necromancy, Tipu Sultan's colossal treasure, Mastaan and Chhagan's friendship - all lead to this terrible but inevitable consequences. On closer analysis, we find Mastaan the Bandookbaaz plays a crucial role in tracing the course of India's destiny. But how? Does he fight for the country? Or is he the "Fallen" patriot?

The characters like Tipu Sultan, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Ghalib Mirza, the British beast Nicholson are overtly well known, yet the novel paves it's way through this familiarity and brings out the unfamiliar. This piece of historical fiction manifests the author's historical sagacity and an adroit use of language. Historical fiction always intrigues me and this one is a splendid amalgamation of history and thrill. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Mastaan The Fallen Patriot of India by Vineet Bajpai🌟
Amidst all the cannon-roars, brutal duels, intoxicated mushairas, ravishing courtesans, haunted treasures and bloody battles – unfolds the immortal story of the magnificent Mastaan & the beautiful Fay.
The story is set around the 1857 war of India where the Indian soldiers start opposing East India company.
Let me say i am really bad at History, remembering names, dates and all.
So i am grateful the way book starts, it starts in bits and pieces introducing all the characters and the happenings of the events.
The writing flows smoothly, its creatively brilliant with beautiful sketches at the start of each chapter, it evokes a vivid imagination of life at Dilli, the injustice of East India company, the battlesabd challenges faced at that period
I genuinely appreciate how effectively the parallel POV of Mastaan, Bahadurshah Zafar and others is executed.
Woven in beautiful poetries , Stories of Mughal dynasty, how it came to end, love of Mastaan And Fay, it was captivating journey from First to last page.
My heart went out to Mastaan and Fay 💙
I Don't wanna giveaway spoilers, but i am sure this book will leave your heart racing and craving for more.
This Book ends with a Bang! A Cliffhanger 😑
I literally cannot wait to read the second book.

🌻मत पूछ कि क्या हाल है मेरा तेरे पीछे
तू देख कि क्या रंग है तेरा, मेरे आगे...

A treasure for people who are fascinated by history. It is such an amazing and intriguing read. The book is a work of fiction and some reality but the author has written the book with such ease and descriptive language, it all seemed real.

Blurb- Over barely a couple of centuries, the British East India company metamorphosed from being a humble trade company to a mammoth political monster. With the defeat of Tipu Sultan, the company become unstoppable. Drunk with power, the East India Company had made more enemies than it could have ever envisaged.
Amidst this, all unfolds the immortal story of the magnificent Mastaan Pandey. His love story with Fay is very interesting to read.

~The writing style is intriguing and fast-paced.
~The book has mentions Mirza Ghalib and his beautiful shayris.
~Their many characters but the author has maintained a clear brief description of all.
~Living in the capital and reading about its past, knowing and walked on all these paths where years ago history was made is some kind of surreal feeling.
~Some of the fight scenes are described with such amazing style, that they seem real.
~Mastaan is the first book in the series followed by the "1857 The Sword of Mastaan" and I can't wait to read the next part.
~Overall, an amazing read.
