Want to teach your kids about dealing with change while learning a new culture? Then We're Moving to Canada is the right book for you. In this first book in the series, Sade receives news that her family is moving from Nigeria to Canada. Everyone is excited, except Sade. She is upset about leaving her best friend, missing her favorite TV show, not getting to harvest her guavas, and not being able to collect fresh eggs from the family chickens. Sade decides her only option is to ruin the family’s plans. Will she succeed? Or will she come to accept that change is a part of life?
The storyline in this book is exceptionally good and unique in a way. I have read a number of children books this year, almost all of them are fairly tales, majority of the children's books are a cliché.
This book takes a different route, it's about a family moving to a new country. Which as you expect can be scary for anyone. The author shows how far kids will go to avoid change because of fear.
This book is a really good idea for children going through big changes
I really enjoyed reading this and sharing it with my sons. A lot of children going through such a massive change like relocating are anxious about any and everything. This story will help to allay their fears. The colors are lovely and the illustrations are beautiful. Easy to read by young readers, great for storytime as well. I'd recommend this for age 4-8.
As a part of me getting my granddaughter to read more we read this. Her take on the book is that she likes the pictures that goes along with the story. She likes and understands that change is ok. As for me I love the fact that the authors puts a note in front of the book telling you how to pronounce names. I thought it was cute how the little girl was doing everything to prevent them from moving.
This is a lovely and kids-friendly book and very easy to read. As an immigrant from Nigeria to the United States, even though I was older than Sade when I first got the news of moving, my initial thoughts and feelings were almost the same as hers. I will share this book with my kids and family as well. Thumbs up!
I love the lessons it passes across - about change, dealing with worry, making lists, and looking at the bright side of things. I really liked the illustrations as well, it made the story ‘come to life’! I’m an adult and enjoyed reading this, I am sure children will enjoy it even more! Well done Yewande.
This is a cute book that’s great for a child moving to a new place. It also introduces Nigerian culture, which is nice. I hope there is a second book about the family moving to Canada and the lessons that come with the actual move.
Engaging story and well illustrated. Speaks to the theme of children worrying about change as they move or migrate to a new country. Well written from the point of view of the child.
Change can be difficult! In this story, Sade learns that her family is moving from Nigeria to Canada. But what about her friends? Her chickens? Her favorite TV show? This is a great story about helping kids find the positive when faced with change.
I know so many children for whom this book is perfect
