Hey, Piano Man

Rate this book
Fandom: 방탄소년단 | Bangtan Boys | BTS
Relationships: Min Yoongi | Suga/Park Jimin, Jeon Jungkook/Kim Taehyung | V
--------------------------------------------------
In which Yoongi, after having his evening completely ruined by a drunk asshole on his way home from a rough day at the studio, decides he himself needs to get drunk and wanders into an old-fashioned pub. He may or may not find his bad mood washed away by the cute bartender, and he may or may not end up completely and utterly smitten when said bartender gets on the small stage and starts singing in the most angelic, beautiful, seductive voice he's ever heard in all his life.

“You play the piano?”

“I... yeah, I do, actually. How'd you know?”

The bartender's smile is shy and confident all at once, and Yoongi's heart lurches in confusion. “Just a feeling,” Jimin says softly, busying himself with drying a glass. “Your hands are beautiful. They look like they were made to play an instrument.”

The writing was a bit rough/inconsistent, but I soldiered on because #YoonMin4Life.

Let's start with the "coulda been better." The opening scene: Not sure all that was necessary to set the tone. The confrontation felt a bit over-the-top, but it does the job of putting Yoongi in a worse mood than he already was, making his turn-around more dramatic.

That bathroom scene: It was a little too prosaic and romantic to be the raunchy tryst I think it was meant to be. (Or should have been given how many orgasms, Jimin's reaction, and it's a public bathroom.) The frequent mention of "spit" (not used for fun) should have been replaced with "drool" for it to have the right connotation. Also, we aren't told why a regular-ish type pub would have lube in the bathroom drawer; even Yoongi questions this. (Aside: I've never been in a public restroom that had an under-sink drawer. Or any drawer that wasn't a supplies closet or side table kind of thing.)

The confrontation scene: Could have been fleshed out a bit with dialogue. Just telling us that a comment "launches a whole new wave of angry protests..." without giving us the argument is a missed opportunity. "It takes twenty whole minutes to convince Taehyung that Yoongi isn't involved in human trafficking..." etc. does work on it's own, though that conversation would have been amazing.

Now, what I think this fic does really well is highlight how Jimin seems to be two different people sometimes. Remember, I'm new to the fandom so I haven't gotten all the deets yet, but it seems to me that the shy-ish, quiet, sweet Jimin we get in interviews and public appearances turns into an alluring and sexyAF and HOLY FUCK!! dance god once you put him on a stage and shine a spotlight on him. That's what we get here, going from a friendly, personable bartender to a male siren when he performs, wrapping the audience around his (OMG SO TINY) pinky finger. The way that's written, I could totally imagine the moves he makes around the room and seductive glances he gives toward Yoongi while singing. (Props on the song choice; had to look it up - thanks YouTube!)

But then that's also the whole fic...going from romantic to dirty and back again. Which can be a bit jarring, but fits the 'ship pretty well given Yoongi and Jimin's personalities.

Also, that's some damn good dirty talk/praise kink. (I think I now have a thing for praise kink.)

So, a decent read for my first BTS Fanfic but I think I've been spoiled by Sterek writers. Which means I'll need to do a little more research to find a better example. And watch more clips. (Such a chore...not.) I'm sure it's out there, and I will read more to find that unicorn...but I can only hope it's YoonMin.

(And I really need to find it. Recommendations appreciated. Don't make me start writing again, fandom. Please.)
