I have never been much of a fan of action-adventure mysteries, especially stories with heavy amounts of violence and cruelty beyond my tastes. But occasionally I will fine one unique enough to intrigue me.
Such is the case with HEADCOUNT A LAURA BETH COPELAND MISADVENTURE, by Janet Taylor Perry, (Dragon Breath Press).
HEADCOUNT is the debut of Laura Beth-Copeland, a character in one of Perry's series of novels. Laura Beth is a well to do woman in the prime of life, married to a successful doctor, has two kids and is joyfully awaiting her third child. In the early stages of her pregnancy, she takes a job as a census worker. After she finds a decapitated body on one of her assignments, Laura Beth soon finds herself in a life of terror when local law enforcement and a federal agent inform her that the victim was the wife of a convicted drug lord and advise her that since she was on the scene, her slight involvement could make her the next victim.
Laura Beth soon finds herself in a nightmare as she faces incidents of road rage, a stealthy invasion of her home and various other incidents that become increasingly bizarre and terrifying. After her husband dies in a horrible blast, law enforcement and friends whisk her off into hiding. She now finds herself being a pregnant widow, living with the anguish of being apart from her children that are hidden for their own safety. After more people die trying to protect her, it appears her own demise is eminent.
But after Perry gives us a number of plot twists and surprises, we find Laura Beth still has some hope for triumph and Perry nicely sets the stage more misadventures to come as she continues her exciting series.
