English noblewoman Madlen Colvin has done things she never thought she could do to save her father.
She has lied. She has swindled. And … she has stolen.
She is far from the innocent girl she once was.
Nothing shocks Madlen more than Highland rogue Matthew Herries.
The Highlander frustrates and maddens Madlen by turns. Matthew has never met anyone like Madlen before. There's no one like this fierce English girl in the entire world!
Madlen is determined to do what it takes to save her father. And … to save her father, she needs money.
After hearing about a vulnerable payroll delivery on the border … The English girl and Highland warrior join forces. With her brains and his skills with a sword, they could both be richer than they ever imagined.
Madlen wants to free her father. Matthew wants to make his impoverished clan a force to be reckoned with.
Both of them want each other!
The fire between them cannot be put out, and they both know it. Is the Highlander's ransom enough to buy their passion.
When Bad Stuff Happens To Good People. ADULT Historical Romance💕 and Adventure🔪. This is a pretty crazy book, and was disturbing and extremely depressing at times.
The story has Madlen💃💋, a young English noble woman going off the grid and off the rails in her desperate attempt to collect enough 💰money to pay her father's ransom. He was a general and was wounded and captured in France. A French nobleman is holding him for ransom.
The book details the sordid and illegal things Madlen💃💋 does in order to collect the 💰money for The ransom.
Along the way in the borderlands, she meets Matthew🐺🍆⛲🔪, a Scottish Highlander Laird working as a mercenary. He is also trying to earn 💰money, but it's for his clan.
I didn't much like the character of Madlen💃💋, because she was extremely deceitful, and used Matthew's 💘love and care for her as a cruel means to an end.
The characters move through a dystopian 🌎world in the book, where everyone they meet tries to take advantage of them in some way. Much of the story takes place in the winter⛄, with the two travelers fighting the terrible weather❄❄❄ as well as fighting with each other.
The book ends in sort of a cliffhanger, with one of the minor characters in this book leading the reader into her own story, which is the next book.
Madlen Colvin lost her mother three years ago. Now she was alone because her father was in France fighting and she missed him. He had been captured and a ransom was wanted. She sold the manor but still did not have enough. So she became a thief. She had been working on it for two years now. Matthew Herries had hardly eaten even though he had money but he also needed a horse to get away from some English soldiers after helping a girl getaway. Just then a lad was mounting a horse so he jumped on board and off they went. It turned out the lad was a she. He kept trying to convince her he was a man of honor. She had been alone for a while and knew men would do anything to get a woman and she tried to be cautious. They had found some information that a payroll for the English was coming over a pass named Hull. This was funny in spots, but also a little sad in others. Matthew was a Scot and the winter came on and it was time to stop warring until the weather warmed up. There were a few twists and it was entertaining. The writing kept your attention and the story flowed well. The characters were killers and scary but the main ones were gentle with each other. I kept reading, I wanted to know what was coming and it had me very interested. I highly recommend this book. I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it and loved it.
How far will Madlen go to gather enough coin to save her father and what will she do next? Matthew is in the borderlands and is moving to get to the north to join a group to live with until the winter has passed, and he rejoins the war. Forces bring them together to survive and little do they know it will send them into a journey that neither of them foresaw. She is just gritty enough to jump into danger without thought and he is strong enough to endure whatever fate throws them into. The trials they face will make them see, they are stronger together than they ever could be apart. The story will make you swear at him to stop her and make you want to turn her over your knee and spank some sense into her. A hot love story that will keep you up all night until you finish this book. A don’t miss!
Life as an English lady with a loving home and father was everything to Lady Madlen... until the war... until her father was wounded, captured, and a ransom ask. Even after selling everything, it wasn’t enough so Madlen struck out to do whatever it took to free her father. An encounter while stealing a horse put her running with a Scottish soldier. Treachery and sacrifice, passion and sorrow put her on an adventure towards a life she never imagined she would find and a love that would last a lifetime and beyond! Once again Anne has written a love story filled with dreamed of truths. This is how love should always be! Please give it a read!
This is the story of Matthew & Madlen. He is Highland soldier. She is an English Lady of a Lord trying to get the money for her father's ransom who is being held by the French. They meet on the road. They end up staying together, and Madlen convinces Matthew to come with her to rob the English soldiers pay. They meet up with a terrible snow storm, among other things. There is a lot of chemistry between them, too. A lot happens in this story; some good, some not so good. In the end there are a couple of twists. There is an HEA. I like Anne Morrison's writing a lot, and her stories are great. I recommend the reading of this book.
Madlen will do whatever she must to save her father, as she is stealing a horse, Matthew tries to steal the same one. They end up leaving together on it and when they learn about a shipment of gold can they work together to get their hands on it? Fast-paced historical read with loads of drama, suspense and steam. I liked the chemistry between the characters, so much fun. The story draws you in and takes you back in time. An entertaining read.

ONE DELICIOUS DELIGHT!!! Wipe out! Anne not only hit the motherload, she brought down the house and blazed the field, throwing this baby into a tailspin with shocking impacts. Showcasing the wonder and thrill, displaying the drama, intrigue, distress, turmoil, danger and mounting suspense while tension spirals, blasting this treasure to life brilliantly. Divvying up incredibly, well rounded scenario's that punch dead center, ramping up the anticipation and adrenaline with such intensity and precision, thrusting this gem to a whole new level. Advancing through the trials and tribulations, along with a bounty of plot twists and sleek turns, grounding in it's strength and awe inspiring in it's depth. The personalities are well matched and balanced with enough flaws for diversity. The characters and scenes are strikingly sharp with such colorful descriptions it gives you a full understanding and realism that flow smoothly. Awesome job Anne, thanks for sharing this incredible jewel with us.
Oh wow, I absolutely loved Matthew and Madlen's story! Theirs is a story showing what a person will do for love, no matter what. I love how they first meet, by trying to steal the same horse!! lol I'm always impressed by the way Anne Morrison writes and I've yet to be disappointed in any of her books.
Madlen has fallen on hard times while trying to get enough money to pay the ransom to have her father released from prison. Matthew is a soldier on his way home to his family who he hasn't seen in years. When they meet, plans change and they both face an adventure neither expected!! I loved Matthew's sense of humor, even in the midst of danger and how protective he is. Madlen is a strong and determined lass and hates to show any sign of weakness. Put the two of them together and you can feel the sizzling attraction:) Add a few twists and turns and you have a brilliant story!
I was given an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
An exciting adventure for an English Lady and a Scottish Warrior with stealing, lying, sword fights and a determined woman on mission. Madlen is the daughter of an English Lord. He is being held for ransom by the French and it is up to her to get the money. She does so by stealing along the Scotland English border. Madlen meets Matthew, a Scottish fighter resting for winter, when they both try to steal the same horse. These two team up together to steal a shipment of gold from English soldiers and they spend a lot of time arguing and trying to keep Madlen out of trouble.
