Rock Valley High #1

Dare You to Kiss the Quarterback

Rate this book
A little dare never hurt anybody...

I’m ready to rock my senior year. So what if my parents are recently divorced, the captain of the cheerleading team hates me more than tan lines, or that I’ve been forced to wear the school’s smelly mascot costume? Those things I can handle. (Maybe) But if I get to sing my original song at the town’s big centennial event, I’ll be on my way to living the life I’ve always dreamed.

But there’s only one problem:

Collin thinks-he’s-God’s-gift-to-women Preston.

Foster kid. Bad boy. And star quarterback of the Rock Valley High football team.

It’s bad enough that the whole school thinks we made out at a party (Nothing happened. Seriously.), but now I’ve been partnered with Collin to perform at the centennial event. If I get it my way, he’ll drop out and we’ll both forget our near-kiss ever happened.

But Collin and his cocky half-grin aren’t easy to forget.

Neither is the shiver-inducing way he looks at me.

I’ve got to keep my eyes on the prize, but being around Collin might just be the distraction that I need.

This is a sweet young adult romance in the Rock Valley High series of stand-alone novels.

Not really that much great to say about this one other than that I got through it. Somethings were okay, characters were mostly okay. To be honest the only way to describe this book is "okay".

This was my first experience with this author and I really loved her style of writing. Well edited, great characters, smooth pacing... her writing very much resembles Maggie Dallen, Anna Catherine Field, Judy Corry, amongst others. A clean YA romance. I will be looking for more of her work in the future.

Dare You to Kiss the Quarterback was all kinds of cute. It also doesn't hurt that it was super easy to devour and I didn't hate one person for too long. That doesn't mean that someone, cough cough Savannah cough cough, didn't annoy me and was the typical mean girl. She did have a redeeming moment or two but I'm not really holding my breath for the next book. I'm sure she will turn back into her evil ways if things don't go her way.

Other than her, you meet Audrey and Collin. They were pretty cute together and didn't really run in the same crowds until their senior year. Mostly because this is the year that Audrey's life kind of got flipped upside down. Her parents are divorced and her dad is now married to a stranger. She doesn't talk to him and just wants to make her mom happy again. So she does the unthinkable, tries out for cheerleading and makes it. Sort of.

Then there's the drama and honestly, I eye rolled so many times. I get that it's YA and set in high school but dang.. the drama was unnecessary at times. Still ended up devouring the book though so I guess it doesn't really matter.

A Cute, Cliche, Clean, YA read
Never been kissed vs Bad boy star quarterback.
A simple game of truth or dare led to an interesting love story between Audrey and her Prince Charming, Collin. The story would have been incomplete without Audrey's evil cousin, Savannah, who made it her life's mission to torture Audrey.
This is no Cinderella story, but they lived happily ever after.

This book will have you smiling the whole time. Seriously.

There is just something about an enemies-to-lovers, bad boy, quarterback trope that I just love. This book took the best parts of these tropes and presented them on a silver platter. It was cheesy, but not too cheesy. Cliche, but in a way that made me grin. And completely endearing.

Somehting that I loved about this book was that the main characters were doing more than just living their lives and falling in love. They were working on a song for a big celebration. I was a little scared of this being "just another sports romance" so the music aspect was a nice surprise.

As well, I liked the depth to both Audrey and Collin that was shown. They each had family issues and personal challenges to go through in this book. I loved seeing them change and grow and helping each other along the way.

I was sad for a hot second that we didn't get to know Audrey's best friends better, but it looks like they're each going to get their own books in the series. While I would have liked more screen time for them in this book, I can now see why they didn't get it. This just makes me that much more excited to read the other books in the series now.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sweet, cute, and slow burn romance between two truly likable characters. I'm so glad there are five books in this series because I want to soak up all the writing by Andersen!

I really liked this cute story!
I liked the two main characters Audrey and Collin. They felt genuine and fun, and even though Collin was a bit hard to like at first, in the end, you can't help but love him!
I thought the character developments were really well done- especially for this kind of sweet/fun novel.
Collin and Audrey were really cute together, and I loved that they were passionate about the same things.
Of course there were a lot of cliche moments in the story: the mean girl, the best friends, the hot and popular jock... but overall the novel was fun and lighthearted and I really enjoyed it!

If Hallmark did YA romance... (includes a parental caveat)

This was a fun, well written story. The main characters are sympathetic & likeable. I especially liked that the foster parents were good people - YA has a bad habit of making them bad guys all too often.

It's a pretty entertaining story, although in real life, Savannah would have had some kind of more direct adult oversight than the principal. She still could have done a lot to make Audrey miserable & could probably even engineer keeping her off the squad, but not quite the little Napoleon she is here.

Collin & Audrey both have misconceptions about each other. Collin's persona is a deliberately manufactured barrier, while Audrey's is created by her effort to cater to her fears. The truth is that they are both hurt and hurting, & trying to figure out how to deal with their lives as they are, as well as what's in their future.

Despite some angsty subjects, it doesn't stew, but still manages to be a pretty lighthearted, happily-ever-after kind of story.

Things wrap up a little too nicely & neatly to be totally believable, but this is a perfect book to pick up when you want something to pick you up!

*Clean romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic

*Parental caveat: Ironically, after all their talk about the stupid "sexy" versions of costumes, Audrey does a sexy raccoon. That was disappointing. With the high-heeled boots, the description sounds almost like a raccoon version of the playboy bunny.

It's certainly impractical. Dance brigade & cheerleaders don't perform in high heels for obvious reasons - it's begging for a twisted ankle or worse.

Still, this provides an opportunity to talk to daughters about the fact that women tend to think of "sexy" as meaning "cute", but guys tend to perceive "sexy" as "sex" - and that message isn't one that you can limit to specifically chosen recipients.

You end up with guys hitting on you who you'd rather didn't, & guys who are interested in sex with you - but not interested in you as a person.

Dress attractively if you like, but in a way that projects the kind of dignity you expect to be treated with & proclaims you're a total package not just wrapping paper.

It was good

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2020...

***Spoilers**

I liked this book., it not much that I could say about this book. But I felt that Collin was pretty attracted to Audrey way before they had to do that performance together. I was glad that he figured things out for himself; and realize that he shouldn’t walk away from school, family (adopter), Audrey, etc. talking with his dad after Audrey left helped him figured things out!!

Also, I was glad that Audrey talked to her dad... about how she felt not only that she talks to her mom too. What I often realize times children/teens etch; who grow up with married parents; the parents get divorced. They end up upset and then take up everything to make either parent happy! I think Collin speaking on it that time was good for her since I think she needed to hear it...

Romance, clean;
Cute premise, more of a 3.5 for me as a reader. Characters were relatable and their issues well written. Sweet how he looked out for her, when he could have taken advantage of her. Nice chemistry and attraction between them.

The story was cute and I always like a bad boy and hate-to-love story. I love the music aspect of this and how it bonded them. I found it kind of annoying that the music teacher's name kept getting mistakenly changed throughout the book. All in all it was a fun read and I plan on reading the next one as well.

Couldn’t put this book down. It wasn’t too long only 150 pages which is short and it felt like there was a lot more that could of been said and done. I enjoyed the storyline and how Audrey faced her fears and helped Colin figure out that he can fall in-love after his traumatic past.

At Rock Valley High, there was nothing quite so deadly serious as a game of truth or dare. Reputations were built or buried on such things.

Try as I might, I just couldn’t figure him out. Bad boy jock with an infamous reputation with the ladies. Now a knight in shining armor for the school’s ridiculous mascot. It just didn’t make any sense. What did he get out of helping me?

Before I could stop myself, I marched right up to the boys’ locker room door and yanked it open. Plastering a hand over my face, I stepped inside and kept my eyes glued to the floor. No need to scar myself by seeing something that I shouldn’t. No girl needed to live with that at the early age of seventeen. With five confident steps forward, I barred myself in the doorway to the main lockers and ignored the influx of wolf whistles and warning shouts about a girl in the locker room.
“Collin Preston, I’m not leaving until you agree to sing with me,” I announced.

“But I know when my little brother has it bad, and he’s totally into you. Just look at the way he’s staring at you.”

“But I’m shipping you and Collin, for sure. You make a cute couple.”
“Don’t you have a track to go run?” I asked, vaguely amused. She splayed her hand on her chest and gasped dramatically.
“Trina, I think she’s trying to get rid of us so she can flirt with Mr. Hot Quarterback all by herself.”

And despite all the lies I had told myself, he was the boy I was falling for.

Too much cuteness! This was my first book that I read by this author, Lacy Anderson, and it won’t be my last. She has the kind of writing and storytelling as Maggie Dallen and Judy Corry. This was a clean YA romance full of cuteness and adorableness. Collin and Audrey come from two different crowds, but as fate has it, they are thrown together to sing with each other for the school and the town. This book had me smiling the whole time. It also had family issues, and personal challenges that both Collin and Audrey had to go through. If you’re looking for enemies-to-lovers, a bad boy and a good girl, this book is for you. 5 stars.

Swoon-worthy read

Sometimes I just want a sweet romance that tugs at the inner-teen in my adult body. This book hit all the right spots for my craving for a cute romance. Though we have the usual tropes: girl who doesn't look for attention, the bad boy, a project they're forced into working together, etc, but it's all done so well that I overlooked all that. Plus who doesn't love a good book bad boy? The writing style is clean and crisp. I enjoyed Audrey's hilarious thoughts and determination towards her goals. Her and Collin's backstories were written really well.

There are some things that I'd like to point out though...

This is the second book I've read by the author (I read out of order, reading Mandy's story first). You can now consider me a big fan of her writing :) I'll be reading book 2 next and then keenly awaiting the release of book 4!

I don't know why but I loved this book so much, it was very different of what I was expecting. The characters were not aloof nor basic just because it's an ya book or has no erotica, they had layers and depts and everything I like in a book.
Audrey was a strong girl who realized that you can be brave and fight for what you want. She was the one that went after Collin in more than one ocasion even after he blow her off. That takes guts.
And Collin, a kid who could have everything he wanted if he made himself believe that he needs them, that you can have more than one family, you don't have to choose.
So yeah, this book was awesome and I highly recomend it.

Cute YA romance. Good enemies to lovers story. I feel like they didn't really use the relationship Collin had with his bio dad correctly, and by that I mean they don't really use it to give him depth and I feel like Audrey's problem with her dad kinda mirror them in the way that you can love someone and still be angry with them. I feel like his bio dad was just a device to fix the plot in the end.

I think a teenager would like this book. Nothing too thrilling, but cute.

***No sex, but he is known in the school as being a player. A few passionate kisses.

Trigger Warning: Between the main characters, her parents got a divorce because her Dad found a different woman. Collin is a foster kid who has a dead beat Dad who is still part of his life.

>Book Review – Dare You to Kiss the Quarterback
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Rock Valley High series and ends in an HEA. Audrey is a high school senior reeling from her parents’ divorce. She is a sweet girl, always trying to take on everyone’s problems. The story is so funny, especially when her mascot costume is described! Audrey is paired up with the popular QB, Collin for a musical performance. Audrey is intimidated by Collin, immediately thinking he is a popular jerk. The story shows the importance of looking beneath the first impression to the real person beneath.
>The romance between Collin and Audrey is a slow burn and very “G” rated, but still very romantic. I love the support system Audrey has with her BFFs. Collin’s foster family is a breath of fresh air. I love to see a foster family shown in a positive light. The conflict at the end of the book seemed a little out there, though. Quitting school and leaving foster care practically overnight is not very realistic.
>This book is appropriate for a young adult (16+) audience. I am giving this book 4 stars.

1.5 stars.
I didn't like that Collin laughed at Audrey.
I didn't like what happened in the beach house at the beginning. In real life that would be sexual harassment.
And it wasn't cute when the girl acted stupid in front of the boy. Being humiliated is not cute. And why is it that it is always the girl who gets humiliated?
The relationship between the two changed 180. In the first half, there were enemies. Out of no where in the second half, they were good friends. All I knew was the spent every night together for about a week and then I was supposed to imagine myself that Collin was transitioning into a decent guy.
And of course, they had to kiss to improve their song. And of course, kissing did improve their song. *eye-rolling*
Also, why did all her friends encourage her to couple up with the guy when he was famously known as a bad boy? Like, ooh he's bad but he's hot so it should be fine. And, boy he was repeatedly described as hot throughout the book as if finding a cute boyfriend should be every girl's goal.

Audrey & Collin

It all starts with a dare to kiss...

Audrey has a lot going on her senior year. Her parents divorce, dad remarries, and she has to deal with her monster of a cousin Savannah.

Collin is a quarterback for the football team and is living in foster care with a very loving couple.

Both are attending the end of summer party at the beach and are introduced when Savanah, Audrey's cousin, says that in order for her to be on the cheer team, she has to kiss Collin. He agrees, and let's just say that the kiss does not go as planned.

Audrey finds out that not only did Collin audition for the centennial performance, but the two were paired to write a love song & perform together.

The two form a friendship, but can it turn into more? No spoilers here.

I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

Okay, so here's the thing.

I'm a huge fan when it comes to bad boys being the main characters, I really am, especially if they were popular athletes in general and football quarterbacks in specific.

BUT!

This Book didn't really capture the hot-bad-boy-quarterback concept!

Not really.

I couldn't see it.

I think Collin falling in love with Audrey so quickly was such a turn off for me! It wasn't realistic and it was way too far from logical!

Audrey met Collin.

Poof!

They fall in love.

I mean come on!

We all know that the main characters will fall for each other eventually, we get it and we love it, I love it, but the way Lacy made the characters fall in love from the very beginning was totally awful!

So, let's just say I liked this book but honestly I didn't love it.

This story could have been written better but sadly it wasn't.

Cute, well-written story playing with some familiar tropes:
- A game of Truth or Dare gone awry? Check.
- Mean-girl head cheerleader? Check.
- A never-been kissed heroine and a bad-boy star quarterback? Check.
- Forced to work together on a school project? Check.
- Family drama galore? Check.

This was a fun and enjoyable story with likeable characters (both main characters and supporting cast), and even though both Audrey and Collin are dealing with some serious issues, this story is still a sweet YA romance that delivers a Hallmark-worthy happy end and gives you all the warm fuzzies (raccoon pun not intended).

This is the first book I've read by this author, but it sure won't be the last. :)

Dare you to Kiss the Quarterback

This was a great YA/Teen romance novel. I love that this book was a clean romance novel. It also had two solid main characters. I enjoyed the musical aspect of this book. I thought the lyrics the author added to this book were interesting and unique. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading the other books in this series. The only thing I would have changed this particular book is I would have liked to have read from both main characters point of views and switched back and forth rather than just reading from one. However, all in all it was a great book 4.8

A cute high-school first love romance. Follows the usual trope of the future couple being paired together on a project and the two of them developing feelings down the line. The cousin's hatred feels like a forced plot point, especially since all is forgiven in the end. Idk unless she (the cousin) gets a book why include her as an obvious villian? Also was our main girl half Mexican or Latinx? Cuz her dad saying "mija" once confused me cuz no one else speaks Spanish and the descriptions could go white girls or fair skinned POC. Race and ethnicity weren't mentioned so I can't even fully visualize anyone outside of our couple because of the cover.

My first book from this author and I am going to be sincere and say that I was not expecting much. Come on, bad-guy, tattoo, and popular? How could be any fun in reading another book like that?

But ladies and gentleman, how i was wrong! The first few lines already had me hooked. I really liked the writing and how fluid everything was. Furthermore, I needed to reread the first kiss three times before stopping gigling and start to read the rest ❤️

We don't see anything about Colin's perspective, but what we can find is a cute guy with a passionate gaze.

This is a a good book and I am waiting for next ones!

One plot mistake, but overall a great YA

There was an issue in this book with Collin's mom as it related to the overall story. Collin says that he didn't know his mom on one page and then several pages later "she died when he was 12" and "she was the sweetest person in the whole world". If that plot mistake can be fixed this really is a 5 star YA. Overall good writing and I loved the characters.

Content: Clean - just kissing
Language: Clean
Religious: No. I do love the part where the young foster child prays for dinner. That prayer made me laugh.

Happy reading!

I managed to read the first four chapters, but that's it.
I have nothing against cliché books. I've read lots of them and really liked them. This is just too much.
The poor girl who is antagonised by her cousin, the head cheerleader, who hates her and the bad boy and quarterback who is actually a very nice guy.
Almost every scene made me roll my eyes, and I finally abandoned it when the mascot costume showed up.

I really wanted to like it, but its not worth it.

Well, this was a cute story.

Audrey and Collin get partnered together to sing at the centennial event. Audrey wanted this by herself but now she has no choice but to sing with Collin. While she butts heads with him, she is starting to find out that there is much more to Collin than she thought.

Super cute. A bad boy and a good girl romance. If you want something that is light and fluffy while also being a quick read, this is the book for you. I will be putting the second book on the TBR list.
