Fatal Magic

Rate this book
Someone wants Sydney dead. Only problem is, she has no idea who. Pushing her off a cliff, thinking the deadly ocean waves will finish their dirty-work, was their first mistake. The near-death experience opens channels of uncontrollable magic, which Sydney is told should have remained dormant.

As if finding out magic is real and hit-lists aren't enough, Sydney discovers her family lied to her. They were witches too. But they're all dead. And she's left to fend off the psychos after her blood with only Luke, her childhood crush turned steamy college student, on her side. Turns out being a witch isn't as awesome as you'd think, especially when your magic has fatal consequences.

Emily Bybee knows exactly how to create a perfect mix of science and fantasy. She creates anticipation, intrigue, and a sense of immersion into her fictional world throughout the book. I have never been disappointed by a novel written by Emily Bybee.

Wow. SERIOUSLY good!

When Sydney returns home after her uncle's sudden death, she finds many things just as she remembered. Especially Luke, the boy she's loved since childhood. But when someone tries to kill Sydney at the funeral, a shocking new power awakens inside of her. She discovers that her family is part of the world of witches--and Luke's one of them, too. As Sydney tries to develop her fledgling powers, the attempts on her life continue. She realizes that a secret cult of dark witches wants her dead. Can she uncover their plot and save herself--and Luke--in time?

I definitely enjoyed the first book in this series, but Fatal Magic reached an all-new level of awesomeness. I love that we get a new set of characters and a new romance, but never fear; your favorite characters from the first book will make an appearance. The author also sets up even greater stakes for the next book, so I hope we don't have to wait too long!

This is a brilliant read! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well-developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. Our protagonist finds that her family has lied to her, and that witch and magic is real. She has found she cannot control the magic that has opened up for her. Not only can she not control her magic but she also has someone trying to kill her. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author. I received a free copy of this book from the author. This is my true and honest review,

I enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series (which was great). The plot is complex with surprising twists and kept me captivated until the end. The characters and relationships are well developed - Sydney is a daring and witty protagonist with a complicated love interest, an awesome best friend, and the coolest pet ever. I can’t wait to read the third book!

Hot fury churned shards of glass in my belly. Someone tried to make it look like I killed myself. And everyone so easily believed it to be true.

Someone is trying to kill Sydney Flannagan because of a secret that has been dormant until her near death experience. Her powers as a Defect, a witch with a special gene, have come to light and there are people out there who want her dead along with her parents and uncle.  With the help of a long-time friend and crush, Luke, who is also a witch, and Rowan, an Earth witch and her best friend from school, she is thrown into a race for life and time that could get them all killed.

This is the second book in the Unstable Magic Series that I have read and actually I like it better than the first.  Sydney is a fearless bad ass with a third-degree black belt who not only kicks butt with her newly found powers, but in hand-to-hand combat with witches.  She has to learn her new witch skills pretty quickly to save herself and her friends before it is too late.

Bybee writes strong characters with flaws and does a great job developing their personalities and traits that make them unique.  The conflicts the characters face make them more interesting and relatable which move the story along smoothly.

I loved Sydney's face-paced and harrowing story and it can be read on its own,  though I'm glad I read Fractured Magic first just so that I could see how Maddie and Jax fared in this book.  I can't wait to read Rowan's story.

Thank you to Ms. Bybee for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

I enjoyed the first book, but I enjoyed this book even more. It feels as if there is a story going on within a story with this series and I dig it. We find out more about Sydney and her part to play in the overall world that Emily Bybee has created and this chick is freaking fierce with a loyal best friend and even a love interest, which isn't always easy in the witch world.

All in all, Fatal Magic starts right after the first book finishes but introduces new characters while building on the overall goal/theme. I am still left with SO freaking many questions about how everything is going to play out and I want to know more! When is the next book coming out?!?! 4 outta 5 stars from me!

PS: Thank you to Emily Bybee and YA Bound Book Tours for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!
