Horn is trying to understand who is Emma and what is her secret. His job is to find wanted men and collect bounties, so he can recognise killers. Emma is not a killer according to his instinct.
On the other hand, Emma keeps trying to kill him.

...you were a very bad girl...

Naughtiness and disciplining. This was actually hotter than the first book in the series.

Pretending to be something opposite of one's nature is going to be a difficult charade to keep up. Usually these go one of two ways. Either the person's original nature comes out or the person becomes the new persona. This could be a good or bad thing. For Emma it is a good thing. She would do anything to support her brother. Even when he gets her involved in a robbery that ended in murder. This was supposed to be a simple case of stealing from the rich and moving on. No one said anything about getting shot at or shooting someone. Lucky for Emma, she cons her way out of trouble and ends up with a sweet job she would have never been able to land due to her background.

From a feminist point of view, really, what choice did Emma have back then? Yes, in the States, women were able to find jobs that were previously limited to them. Still, based on family background and several other factors it still held women back. So Emma did the best she could in the circumstances out of her control. One would think this would be empowering. In some ways yes. In some ways no. For those who are feminist, how is it conceivable to appreciate or even enjoy a book where the main character, Emma has to submit to some asshat stranger male who decides she needs a good spanking? It's hard to explain.

First, this is a fiction story and the power struggle between Emma and Jackson is more amusing than offensive. It is a role men and women have played for centuries. Jackson is more bluster than not. Emma is more interested than not. Second, this story is erotically hawt. Forget about who tops who. The sex scenes are well done as to be expected from Ms. Blake. I am a bit biased because I tend to like the sex acts Ms. Blake provides in more graphic detail. I would not be opposed if she went even more graphic and kinky. *wink* Third, Jackson has met his match with Emma. She isn't a doormat. She is feisty. Jackson may come across heavy handed, but it is apparent he is softening to Emma. It will just take a while.

I enjoyed this story even if it is out of my comfort zone. I am not a fan of westerns. I also do not like cowboy themes. (Don't all faint from shock.) Ms. Blake overcomes my reservations with fun characters and hawk kinky sex scenes. Recommended to kinky readers who enjoy spankings with a domestic discipline flavour.

I enjoyed this book very much. Emma is a very entertaining well-developed character. I felt her fear and conflict throughout the story. Horn is an intense character, emotionally scarred and obsessed with revenge, but Emma brings out his protective nature. Their interactions are highly amusing. The plot was creative and held my interest. This book can be enjoyed as stand alone, even though Horn was introduced in the first book.

SHE LOOKED LIKE AN ANGEL WHO HAD JUST BEEN CAUGHT IN A SIN—BY THE DEVIL

A great addition to this continuing saga in the Ride Hard series, which will read as a standalone, and where the author has taken artistic liberties and based it loosely on an actual person. The story is a page-turning erotic historical, full of mystery, suspense, angst, passion, and revenge. Falsely accused and framed for murder, his cattle and land stolen, and then engulfed in the war between the states, a group of four will become three, and now they each are seeking their revenge against someone.

Emma Fairfax finds herself stuck between a rock and a hard place, being the younger sister of Ezra, and now with a ruthless gang. Ezra has her dressed as a young boy trying to protect her, but she is still in a pickle with these stage coach robberies. When one goes bad, people are killed including Ezra, Emma will flee on foot and as luck would have it, able to assume the role of Glendolene Rimmel, a school teacher. Is her secret about to catch up with her and at what cost?

Jackson Horn is a man on a mission. He is a hired gun and knows no law. “This man was a gunfighter, a lawman, a hunter and there was a good chance she was the prey.” He is after a gang that has been holding up stagecoaches. Between his jobs, he is after the man who framed him for the murder of a fourteen-year-old, cost him his land, and changed the course of his life. The things that have helped keep him alive is his skill with a gun and his gut instincts. He knows how to read people and can tell when they are lying.

The plot will have Emma’s life changing at a stage robbery that goes bad, killing her brother and having her shoot the head of the gang, then fleeing for her life. Coming into a town and assuming another woman’s identity, become a respectable school teacher works for awhile, but Emma lives in constant fear that the truth will come out. Jackson Horn comes into town, and the grapevine is buzzing with information and speculations. That will send Emma in fear, and Jackson’s observation of her tells him she has hidden secrets.

Jackson will pursue, punish, and take liberties with Emma. She shoots at him, not trying to kill him, but hoping to scare him away, but it does the opposite. His methods could be considered non-consensual to dubious consent as he strips and punishes her. A snow storm, being trapped together, her reputation is ruined, and then he leaves town, and she must leave and find a new life. “The lesson may be simple but the man teaching it was complicated. Saint or Sinner? Protector or Punisher? Emma was learning he was a little of both.” Can Emma escape and start a new life in another town? This little bunny will learn she can’t escape her bounty hunting gunslinger.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

My feelings about this book are rather mixed. Although the erotic scenes were very... well... erotic, I had a difficult time getting past Jackson Horn's assumption that he had the right to punish Emma for lying to him when they were still strangers. His arrogance was often far over the line of my comfort zone and I found myself wishing Emma would put a dent in his enormous ego. The fact that this took place in the American West after the Civil War helped a bit, but only a bit.

Despite that major difficulty, the story held my interest from start to finish. I liked Emma, although I wish she'd had a bit more backbone at times. The situation she was in really put her in a bind and did make her actions and reactions more plausible.

Overall another great delivery by Zoe Blake. I loved the little elements of age play that crept in (Little bunny, etc.) I also enjoyed the story and the very natural fear that Emma had of being captured. One thing to note, there's not as much sex (or at least D/s sex) in this story as in others by Ms. Blake. Despite having said that I personally feel the story is quite touching and if more sex had been written in, that would have detracted from the plot. Also, while this is the second book of a series it's not necessary to read the first book in order to enjoy this one. The characters from the first book make a small appearance towards the end of the story.

This was a fun happy little story with a tough ornery 'good guy' and a tough as nails, sassy, trouble making heroine. The story had a sex level that was hot; discipline level that was harsh; and a love level that was satisfying. There was only one scene where the action was bordering on rape, but as this was fiction and she attempted murder, I decided it was not a deal breaker (but it did cast the author 1 star ;-).
I enjoyed the book very much and as you are looking at books that include spankings and other types of discipline, I think you will love it too. Ms. Zoe Blake is an excellent story teller and she has another hit!

"The Gunfighter's Pursuit" is the story of Emma and Horn.
When Emma unwillingly gets involved in a coach robbery, which leads to murder of her brother- she kills the highwayman and escapes to nearby town, only to adopt the identity of the new schoolteacher Gwendolyn.
When notorious Gunfighter Horn comes in town, he is instantly taken by the luscious Emma, and as she resists and lies to him, he decides to take a firm approach- both to her behavior and her bottom!
Naughty western with loads of spankings, anal, and hot lovemaking. There is mild drama, but it all ends in a HEA.
Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Fantastic addition

Oh my, I do believe I liked this book better than book one and that's really saying something because I loved book one! What a smoking hot western romance, I absolutely adored it - all of it. Whew! Horn was a perfect good bad guy, ha ha, and Emma was everything he didn't know he wanted. Together they were combustible! No spoilers or synopsis here, but a word of advice: don't miss this!!

Gunfighter’s Pursuit is an interesting novella about two people on the fringe of post-Civil War western society who meet, have a troubled relationship followed by a very physical relationship, and ultimately fall in love. Along the way, a lot of problems beset both of them, but ultimately it is all resolved in a rather quick ending. Jackson and Emma are both strong and likable, and the book held my attention through to the end.

Emma has been led astray by her brother and now she has to do the best she can to take care of herself. And she is until Jackson Horn comes to town and threatens her safety. Hold on tight for this book, there is train robbery, attempted murder, strict discipline, and a sexy domineering alpha man. *I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Emma killed a man. A bad man, yes, but that still makes her a murderer. When she meets gun for hire Jackson Horn, sparks fly. This is a good read so I won't give too much away. What some would consider harsh punishment, but still really hot. Western, DD, anal, HEA

This is the second book in the Ride Hard series. It is set in the west, shortly after the American Civil War ended. This book could easily be read as a standalone.

Emma is terrified when she first meets Horn, convinced that he is a lawman tracking her down, ready to hang her as a murderess. Luckily for her, he is more of a bounty hunter - a hired gun - who has no intention of prohibiting a future with the lady he has fallen for.

The Gunfighter's Pursuit is a short novel that I read in one sitting. It contains a couple of scenes of dubious consent, but I would not consider the novel to be "dark".

If you are looking for a quick and easy read with dirty scenes and insta-love, this is one book I would recommend for a cozy evening in bed.

Just scratching my recent little itch for the John Wayne hard western hero with the second in this little trilogy of books.

Following the death of parents, Emma and brother turn to a life of stage coach hold ups. A fluke has her facing an opportunity to start a new life as a school mistress.

The decision is taken out of her hands as bounty hunter Jackson Horn rides in to town and quickly sussed out she has a terrible secret she is hiding.
The story is well written with only a few slip ups into medern parlance.

Great to see series based on true historical figures

LORD HELP HER POOR SOUTHERN BELLE HEART

The third book in the Ride Hard series did not disappoint, with witty characters, plenty of angst, anger, lots of suspense, some mystery, and a determined woman seeking revenge for the death of her father and brother. What starts at the beginning stages of the Civil War will fast forward five years. The story is the final in the Ride Hard series, and each book will read as a standalone. I love how Ms. Blake has tied in actual historical facts of females that hid in plain sight within military units during the War Between the States, using her artistic liberties, she paints an interesting picture of the scenes.

Michaela Armistead may live in the south, but she is no simple southern belle, she learned how to ride aside, and can outshoot most men, thanks to skills taught her by her brother, Brandon. Escaping her scheming mother and her cousin, she will disguise herself as a boy and travel to her brother, who has joined a Confederate unit. Life will include remaining with the CSA camp, dressed as a boy, cooking, doing laundry, and giving medical care throughout the battles.

Major John Thomas Brice, commanding officer of a fort, and while he is a stern taskmaster among the soldiers, he isn’t afraid to join them in details and training. When he is summoned into a saloon for a disturbance that includes three of his Calvary soldiers, and one Confederate soldier, he detects something the men have missed; this isn’t a wayward soldier, this is a young woman in disguise.

The plot will have Michaela escape the family home, staying with her brother’s unit, and now she is on a mission, she is determined to seek revenge and justice against two people, her mother along with her new husband. Avoiding populated places, fighting off the elements, as well as two and four-legged beasts, the one thing she wasn’t prepared for, Major Brice. Brice sees her as a little rebel spitfire than needs taken in hand, not just for her actions that could have gotten her killed, but she needs to be protected from her own foolishness.

Brice has never met a woman like Michaela that evoked the feelings he is having. “He was a man used to getting what he wanted, even if he had to take it by force. Hell, taking things by force was what he had been trained t do his whole life!” “There was one, sole driving need that seemed to pound a cadence in his chest—conquer, control, own. This primitive need to master her.” Let the battle of wits and will begin between these two formidable foes.

“There was no doubt Major Brice embodied the warmly-held ideas of chivalry. Rescuing her from the saloon fight, seeing that she was fed and clothed properly, saving her from herself, all bespoke a man bend on care and protection.” “I will see that he pays for harming you. That he shall pay for the damage he has done to you and your family will just be the honey on the deed.”

Will Michaela acquiesce to Brice and his demands, or will she continue to try and do things her way? The story is a fast-paced page-turner, with a dominant and controlling man and an equally feisty and determined woman. There are several spankings, and the story does have dubious consent and non-consensual acts, including rape. There are many creative forms of punishment and explicit sex scenes.

This book is NOT part of a new series; rather, it's a reissue of The Rebel's Secret. The other two books in the series -- The Cowboy's Revenge and The Gunfighter's Pursuit -- are being re-released in a similar fashion. If you've already read those books, it's up to you if you want to spend your money again. So much for truth in advertising...

Interestingly, this book is labeled a "Romance;" again, so much for truth in advertising. I struggle to see where the romance is. While the H is less brutal than Mason was in the first book, Brice beats and rapes Michaela without her consent and -- in the usual double-standard in these books -- considers it fine for him to seek revenge but not the "poor little weak woman." In terms of writing, there's no actual plot in any of these books, just scenes of violence (or, for those who like that sort of thing, erotica), and they're pretty poorly written. I guess I'm struggling to see what's even interesting or reader-worthy or, well, romantic about any of this. I would say that unless you're really into this sort of content (and I completely understand that some readers will like this), don't spend your money: this book and the previous ones really aren't worth it in terms of quality story/writing, character development/relationships, plots, or romantic/erotic scenes (unless romantic and erotic for you are synonymous with torture and rape).

YMMV, but I still think it's wrong to reissue a book and not be truthful about that.

Poor plot

Michaela led a good life as a charming Southern belle when her father is murdered just before the war between the states occurs. She has had to wait five years, but knowing who is responsible, has focused her life in tracking the murderer. Only now she is nearing her goal.
Dressed in a worn rebel uniform, tired, malnourished, she asks questions in a saloon. Hatred between Rebels and Yankees is still high and a soldier insults her and instantly mayhem occurs which is interrupted by the arrival of a Yankee Major and his men.
Major Brice sees through the unkempt man's disguise immediately and drags her to the fort where he keeps her in his cabin. Sparks fly as he refuses to let her go and teaches her domination.
Entertaining it may have been, but the setting and interaction between characters was unrealistic for the time period. An unmarried woman would not
have been accepted so well living in close quarters with a man.The benevolent and friendly reaction of the captain's wife who is sent to tend her is ridiculous.
There is not even a showdown with the perpetrator to round off the story.

I realise reality is suspended in this genre, but I do think realistic ideals from secondary characters should be held to. The scenarios were clipped short because of the length of the story.

Lovedddd this one!! Not such a big fan of the other two books in this series, but I thought this book came together very well.

This is one of those books where a part of you feels like clutching your pearls and worrying about the 'inappropriate things' being done to the heroine by the hero, and yet what you actually end up thinking is, 'Hmmmmmm, I wish that had happened with me.'

I'm a such sucker for the whole 'naughty-girl-up-to-no-good-needs-a-firm-hand'. And this author is sooo gooood at it. I have a feeling this isn't the last time I'll be reading this book.
